Book Poets Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poets Country Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poets Country To every poet his own method. The artist, Mr. Walker, has visited and pourtrayed scenes familiar to the singers; the business of the authors in this volume has been to study the poets' relations to the landscapes with which they were best acquainted, and, in some instances, to describe these scenes in their changed aspects of to-day. In other instances, notably in the case of Shelley, the Poets' Country is the Land of Dreams (as Homer says), and the sky and sea, which are changeless in their changefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wordsworthshire: An Introduction to a Poet's Country When the reader gets past its brief initial chapter, this book will be found to be neither a Guide to the Lakes nor an analysis of Wordsworth's Complete Works, but a series of suggestions about a Poet's mind in relation to the country in which he dwelt. The starting-point of the study is William Words worth's renouncement of Inglewood Forest and its Romance. Download or read book Poets of America Classic Reprint written by Edmund Clarence Stedman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poets of America Of no country, during the last half-century, is of greater interest to the philosophical student, with respect to its bearing on the future, than that of the United States. My judgment is to this effect, after years in which I have read a good deal of native and foreign comment upon the subject. The reasons for it are generally perceptible in the ensuing chapters, but three may be stated here succinctly: I. American poetry, more than that of Eng land during the period considered, has idealized - often in spired - the national sentiment, the historic movements, of the land whose writers have composed it. 2. This nation already, in the second century of a growth which began not in barbarism, but in political civiliza tion, - is gaining in strength, population, and the liberal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Home and Country In compiling a complete collection of the poems of James A. Martling, it has seemed best to include some written in college days, and at a still earlier period, which, I am confident, the author neither valued nor intended to republish; but they have not been excluded from this volume, - first, because of his early friends, by whom they were prized, and also for the reason that so many want to see what a poet wrote in his youthful days. Two or three of his later poems were unfinished, yet were too good to leave out. Some of his published poems have been pronounced "Modern Classics;" and the manner in which London Bridge has been received, - the grateful messages which have reached us from cultured critics like the following: - "How delightfully he sang! And with what moral uplift in his singing he occasionally smites some great note forth from the harpstrings. "'Turbulent our passions roll, Separating soul from soul.' "That is the storm-voice from the seas! "'But the common bond will break, If the strong forsake the weak.' "The old, old plaint from weary centuried time." Book Poems of the Love of Country Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of the Love of Country Old Andrew Fletcher's ballads are, of course, not ballads in the modern sense of the term, but rap ther national ballads, and particularly national songs. As such songs have a power beyond all others they naturally live a long and glorious life. Our British national anthem, written by an Obscure poet in honour of a royal birthday, a song destitute of poetic phrases or Of any of the subtle graces of poetry, has survived the vicissitudes of more than a century and a half, and bids fair to live for many ages. The star-span gled Banner was also the product of a special occa sion, and was written by one who wrote nothing else of permanent value; still, after nearly a hundred years it can excite an American audience to enthusiastic plaudits, or an American army to doughty deeds on the field of battle. Book The Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Country Classic Reprint written by Edward Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country And so with space. Formerly no one had any idea that the stars were a certain number of million miles away. They entered into human life they were beautiful and useful, and mythology made them more human but not less god-like. Now they are inferior to gas and electric light. Our way of human iziu g them is to say that the railway metals of Great Britain, if placed on end, would reach to the moon, or would do so if they were a little longer. We gape and gasp, and the railway is not any more divine or the moon any more human. The sky is now a very large dome pricked through by a number of lights so small as to be practically useless, and if we catch ourselves sighing at them the sigh is deepened by the thought that we are still suffering from a discredited but not extinct superstition. That the uni verse has been enlarged is somehow supposed to be not incompatible with the fact that the telegraph, etc., have annihilated space. 32 The peasant who saw his lord ride home 86 withwith apes and ivory and peacocks had the means for as sublime a View of the glories of the world as the schoolboy who could tell you the diameter of the earth. How long will it take the truths of Science to pass out of the stage of facts and figures into realities or living falsehoods The poet Francis Thompson is one of the few who have even pretended to possess such realities. He speaks of the Earth, a joyous David, ' dancing before God, and of a mighty Spirit unknown that swingeth the slow earth before the embannered Throne.' But this is not the living reality or falsehood of imagination it is the shadowy half-truth of fancy. Poets who believed the earth and man to be two or three thousand years old had not less regard for the dark backward and abysm of time than poets who are geologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Home and Country Although we Americans are quite conscious of our indebted ness to the French art academies for the useful part they have um doubtedly played in the develop ment of our graphic arts, it has been one of the unhappy concom itants of the foreign training of so many of the most accomplished American artists that their point of View and esthetic ideals should have been so completely European ized. Book Poets of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poets of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Edmund Clarence Stedman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poets of America, Vol. 1 EN years have passed since the completion of my critical survey of the poets and poetry of England from the beginning of the present reign. The scheme of the Victorian Poet: included, besides an extended review of acknowledged leaders, a concise analysis of groups forming the general choir of the period represented. The work thus became somewhat complete in scope, and doubtless has served as a critical handbook and means of reference. This incidental result, however, was quite subordinate to the author's main design; and I think that such a fact was evident not only to a professional class, but to all readers interested concerning the spirit and methods of poetry, especially of our English song. To that design I wish shortly to refer, as it is the chief motive of the present volume also. But first I would reproduce a statement made in the Preface to the former work, viz., that the author originally had under taken to write upon the poets of this country and the causes of their successes and failures; that on examina tion he had found modern and radical changes in the conditions afiecting ideal efiort, at home and abroad.
