Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservative poetry?! What is that? As far-fetched as it may sound, Tony Garrison has in fact turned the poetry genre on its ear. This collection of poetry eclectically covers myriad subject matter ranging from current events to history, his time in uniform as well as bits of life, love, faith and humor. He comes at these issues from a common sense point of view and a no non sense, bottom line up front sensibility which reveals the imprint of his twenty plus years in uniform as an American soldier. His treatment of these subjects may be offensive to some but is guaranteed to motivate the reader to think more critically about many of the things we generally take in stride because we just don't have either the time or energy to entertain them. Utilizing poetry to accomplish this mission has proven highly entertaining, hard to put down, roller coaster of a read! This initial offering will whet your appetite for his sophomore effort Yep...I Wrote About That Too

Download or read book A Soldier s Book of Poems written by E.J. Hardy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been medically released from the Canadian Armed Forces after 33 years of service, I found myself dealing with the realities of no longer being able to work, a continually deteriorating state of health, and a significant amount of time on my hands. These poems were an outlet for my pent-up emotions. Importantly, these poems were written while in a deep depression and with heavy substance us/abuse. They are raw, abstract at times, mostly unedited and get dark at the end. Read them as I wrote them. That is where my mind was at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profoundly moving childhood memoir by one of the most widely acclaimed Black American writers of her generation Captured with astonishing beauty, through the eyes of a child, Soldier paints the battleground of June Jordan’s youth as the gifted daughter of Jamaican immigrants, struggling under the humiliations of racism, sexism, and poverty in 1940s New York. “There was a war on against colored people, against poor people,” Jordan writes, and she watches her mother turn inward in her suffering, her father lashing out, often violently, against his own daughter. She learns to harden herself, to be a “soldier,” while preserving a deep capacity for love and wonder. Poignantly exploring the nature of memory, imagination, and familial as well as social responsibility, Jordan re-creates the vivid world in which her identity as a social and artistic revolutionary was forged.

Authored by David Hotchkiss, Ph.D., this book is dedicated to all brave men and women that unselfishly and steadfastly serve in the United States Armed Forces. "A Soldier's Son" looks at the greatness of America through the eyes of a career soldier who comes from a long line of soldiers; this makes him a soldiers son. Life in the military for both the military member and family are highlighted. Historical events such as the attack on the World Trade Center's twin towers, the Iraq War, the history of the Ft. McHenry flag, Pearl Harbor, and the Normandy invasion are all addressed in detail in Hotchkiss' poetic style. Life in America and things known as Americana such as family reunions, Christmas, backyard barbeques, and county fairs are also addressed. This book will make you laugh and cry, reflect and reminisce, and instill a sense of patriotic pride for America and the U.S. military. Hotchkiss invites readers to reflect with his poems on liberty, democracy, the American way of life, and the men and women who fight for it.

Sellars, set in the time before, during, and after his service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The collection encompasses over fourteen years of writing poetry. His poetry centers on the topics of love, life's struggle, family, the emotional effects of war, and the human need to reconnect and pursue God. The author writes from a patriotic heart that combines deep devotion, a love for the nation, and spiritual insight with the firsthand experiences of combat operations in Afghanistan and the emotional aftereffects of war on a soldier's psyche. Lessons and expressions from the heart vividly illustrate the possibility of finding one's pathway to hope through marital hills and valleys by communicating what is often difficult to say. A must read for people who are struggling in their marriages with the difficulties of a soldier returning home. It will help them to reconnect and reignite the flame of marriage, the living symbol of mankind's relationship with God. This deeply personal collection exposes the devotions of a person's soul and the journey to find his way back into the heart of his beloved, while also reconnecting to God and chasing one's own destiny.

Download or read book Breaking Through written by Tony Garrison and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the urging of a very close friend of mine, I attended something called The Breakthrough Weekend (BTW) down in Gainesville, Florida. I really had no idea what was supposed to happen and thought, I'll go because he seems to really want me to and I could do worse than spend a weekend in Florida. So I went. The Breakthrough Weekend is a workshop for personal growth but could more aptly be described as therapy on steroids! It probably is better to go there with no preconceived notion of what to expect- just let it happen to you. That's what I did and I can honestly say that I am so glad that I went. You see, all of us experience our lives in different ways but one thing is common and that is our internal survival instinct. It kicks in without our knowledge while we are children (and on into adulthood as well) to protect us in that we develop our individually customized coping strategy we use to interact with the people and the world around us. Sometimes though, unfortunately, these strategies are not helpful to us in the long run and end up setting us up for failure down the road. If you've ever wondered why you (or somebody you know) always seems to do what they do despite getting the same result every time, you (or somebody you know) probably ought to get to a Breakthrough Weekend, pronto! I cannot begin to tell you how much my Breakthrough has benefited me not only through the insight I gained into myself, but the community of friends of which I am now a part of. Everything offered is not for everybody, but that's okay- treat it like a smorgasbord and take from it what you like and leave what you don't, just do make sure to try everything so you'll know for sure! As a Soldier, we train for war. That is our purpose. And though we train for it, it can still be scary to have to go. Anyone who says otherwise is lying. Seriously, you can die! That being said, it can be a pretty scary thing to look inside oneself too. Who knows what manner of monsters lurk within? But just as serious as it is for Soldiers to have to face their own mortality, it is every bit as serious for attendees at BTW to face their own life, with honesty, vulnerability, and forgiveness. I say this because in both cases the reward is the same- you get to live! But after BTW, you get to live without your baggage. The connection between our emotional well being and our physical health is real. On a follow up oncology appointment, one attendee reported that her cancer had disappeared! If that's not heavy duty enough for you I don't know what is! The pieces I have included in this book have been inspired either by my own experiences or those of my BTW family members. Since we all have emotions (whether we like to admit it or not), you are bound to discover something inside that will speak to you on a very personal level. I can't wait for that to happen! But in any event, I hope you will seriously consider attending and becoming part of this incredible community of people. Having your own discovery is amazing but it is truly life changing to experience what I guarantee you will when you help others achieve their Breakthrough. I believe in this program so much that all proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to funding scholarships to aid people to attend. So thank you in advance for helping someone else on thier way to having a better life. Feels pretty awesome doesn't it? Told ya so!

Book excerpt: I was not baptized when I married my Catholic Wife. She was attending premarriage counseling alone (she was in England and I was in Alabama while we were engaged) and her Priest asked her at the beginning of her last session, "So, you still want to marry this heathen?" That was on the very same day I had won first place in a nationwide contest for the first poem I'd ever written about faith. God was telling me something that I was not yet able to hear. Fast forward about fifteen years or so; I am the Cub-master for our Pack and it is proving to be harder than wood pecker lips. Though I did believe, I was not living my faith. But a Scout is reverent (Scout Law) and I really needed a hand and had the crazy thought that if God saw me in His house on Sunday, things might get better... and they did! I joined the church although due to my regular presence there with scouting, they informed me that they had already considered me part of their church family. I liked all of them a lot too. You might say I even fell in love with them. As I grew in my faith, I began to think about it much more often than I had ever done so before...so I wrote about it! I'm not a theologian. I'm not a clergyman. I'm not perfect. I am just a Christian who freely admits his belief and likes writing about it. I certainly hope you enjoy reading about it too. God bless you, Friend! P.S. All money earned from the sale of this book goes directly to my church and our community of faith (see Three Churches that Can).

Book Here Bullet

  • Pages : 86 pages

Download or read book Here Bullet written by Brian Turner and published by Alice James Books. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-person account of the Iraq War by a solider-poet, winner of the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award. Adding his voice to the current debate about the US occupation of Iraq, in poems written in the tradition of such poets as Wilfred Owen, Yusef Komunyakaa (Dien Cai Dau), Bruce Weigl (Song of Napalm) and Alice James’ own Doug Anderson (The Moon Reflected Fire), Iraqi war veteran Brian Turner writes power-fully affecting poetry of witness, exceptional for its beauty, honesty, and skill. Based on Turner’s yearlong tour in Iraq as an infantry team leader, the poems offer gracefully rendered, unflinching description but, remarkably, leave the reader to draw conclusions or moral lessons. Here, Bullet is a must-read for anyone who cares about the war, regardless of political affiliation.
