Book excerpt: "In 'Wheels', Kwame Dawes brings the lyric poem face to face with the politics, natural disasters, social upheavals and ideological complexity of the world in the first part of this century. The poems do not pretend to have answers, and Dawes's core interest remains the power of language to explore and discover patterns of meaning in the world around him. So that whether it is a poem about a near victim of the Lockerbie terrorist attack reflecting on the nature of grace, a sonnet sequence contemplating the significance of the election of Barack Obama, an Ethiopian emperor lamenting the death of a trusted servant in the middle of the twentieth century, a Rastafarian in Ethiopia defending his faith at the turn of the twenty-first century, a Haitian reflecting on the loss of everything familiar, these are poems seeking a way to understand the world. One sequence is framed around the imagined wheels of the prophet Ezekiel's vision, mixing in images from Garcia Marquez's novels, passages from the Book of Ezekiel and the current overwhelming bombardment of wall-to-wall news; another reflects on Ethiopia and Rastafarian faith; and a third dialogues with the postmodernist South Carolinian landscape artist, Brian Rutenberg. At the head of the collection is a book's worth of poems written in homage to the people of Haiti following repeated visits after the earthquake of 2010. The collection ends where Dawes' poetry began: on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica"--Publisher's description, back cover.

  • Author : Jim Daniels
  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press

  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Places everyone written by Jim Daniels and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Daniels, in his first book of poems, draws upon his experiences in living and working in his native Detroit to present a start, realistic picture of urban, blue-collar life. Daniels, his brothers, his father, and his grandfather have all worked in the auto industry, and that background seeps into nearly all these poems. The first of the book's three sections sketches out this background, then moves into a neighborhood full of people whose lives are so linked to the ups and downs of the auto industry that they have to struggle to find their own lives; in "Still Lives in Detroit, #2," Daniels writes, "There's a man in this picture. / No one can find him." The second section contains the "Digger" poems, a series on the lives of a Detroit auto worker and his family which tries to capture the effects of the work on life outside the factory. Here, we listen to Digger think, dream, wander on psychological journeys while he moves through his routines, shoveling the snow, mowing the lawn, and so forth. In section three, the poems move into the workplace, whether that be a liquor store, a hamburger joint, or a factory. These poems, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous, concentrate on the efforts of workers to rise above the often depressing work of blue-collar or minimum-wage jobs, to salvage some pride and dignity. The poems in this book try to give a voice to those who are often shut out of poetry. They are important. These lives are important, and the poems, more than anything, say that.

Book excerpt: "Progressive, passionate, and unfailingly feminist, Kaufman is a breathtakingly fine poet."--The Nation "If someone is going to be exalted as a representative voice of Jewish or Israeli life in contemporary American poetry, one couldn't ask for a more insightful or mature writer to assume such an impossible role."--The Jerusalem Post "Kaufman approaches Jerusalem's bitter memories, contested histories and joyous unfoldings with a wary love."--Publishers Weekly Shirley Kaufman utilizes enigmatic symbolism from the Book of Ezekiel as she writes into the themes of exile and emigration that have marked her work since she moved to Israel thirty-six years ago. Her new poems attempt to bring meaning to an irrational world--the unrelenting passage of human life, the risks of artistic endeavoring, and the artist's struggle with the loss of sight and memory. After nearly four decades of writing and publishing, Kaufman maintains a lightness of touch even while her poetry takes on an increased awareness of danger and urgency. . . . I don't want to look back but can't see ahead from where I am now and now is whatever I didn't do yesterday. Not what I live in. Now is the fear there won't be anything after now. Shirley Kaufman was born in Seattle, lived in San Francisco, and immigrated to Jerusalem in 1973. Eight volumes of her award-winning poetry have been published in the United States, three by Copper Canyon Press. She lives in Jerusalem, Israel.

Book excerpt: "In these poems, one discovers a life that, through the practice of poetry, has found depth, meaning, and a sense of the sacred. Larry Schug loves his life. He loves his wife, his friends, his home, and his physical work, and these poems are proof of this. They brim with good humor. Sometimes they are strange and inventive, sometimes hip and bluesy; mostly they are straightforward and bristling with the finely observed detail of a life well lived. They are a joy to read." âJoe Paddock

Book excerpt: Wheels Turning Inward is a rich collection of over fifty poems, following a poet's mythic and spiritual journey that begins and ends in Christ, but crosses easily onto the paths of many other contemplative traditions. Ultimately, this is a journey of discovering a keen sense of spiritual community through a meditative dialog with the Divine. Each poem is a reflection and a remembrance of this dialog, arising out of a conversation that is deep and true, a conversation grounded in a sacramental practice of stillness, silence, peace, and unity celebrating the holiness of all creation.Through the poet's voice and eyes, we catch sight of the clear longing of God for all humankind, and the true value of relationships through which we come to know and become known by this mystery. Every poem will gently guide the reader on a journey that leads to an awareness of the sacred calling out to life. Celebrating life in the first breath of an infant, in the bright smile of a little girl, and in the light of creation reflected within the innocent eyes of a small boy. It may also appear in the complex song of a mockingbird mending together the deepest sorrows of the world, or in the angels we give birth to every day. These poems touch and awaken the compassion inherent in every human heart, and remind us that God's presence, however, we may imagine God, may be found within our own breath. In each single breath we take. Breathe Deeply. Turn Inward.

His startling images stretch the boundaries of thought. His poems, at once surreal and corporeal, lead us into new metaphysical and linguistic terrain.
