Book Interpretations of Poetry and Religion

Download or read book Interpretations of Poetry and Religion written by George Santayana and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this valuable work, George Santayana developed the view that poetry is called religion when it intervenes in life, and religion is seen to be nothing but poetry when it merely supervenes upon life. He states that religion and poetry are celebrations of life. Each holds a great value, but if either is misunderstood for science, the art of life will be lost along with the beauty of poetry and religion. Science provides explanations of natural phenomena, but poetry and religion are joyful celebrations of human life born of consciousness. His views contributed immensely to the debate between science and religion at the turn of the century and continue to impact current discussions about the nature of religion. He remained sympathetic to religion and people with religious beliefs throughout the work. He expressed that the religious doctrine might all be just a delusion, but it is generally a helpful one, and the ideal meaning of religion is the nearest thing we have when it comes to complete truth.

Book excerpt: Named as a 2020 Book of the Year by The Times Literary Supplement Survival Is a Style, Christian Wiman’s first collection of new poems in six years, may be his best book yet. His many readers will recognize the musical and formal variety, the voice that can be tender and funny, credibly mystical and savagely skeptical. But there are many new notes in this collection as well, including a moving elegy to the poet’s father, sharp observations and distillations of modern American life, and rangy poems that merge and juxtapose different modes of speech and thought. The cumulative effect is extraordinary. Reading Survival Is a Style, one has the sense one is encountering work that will become a permanent part of American literature.

Book God and Mystery in Words

Download or read book God and Mystery in Words written by David Brown and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-03-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God and Mystery in Words David Brown uses the way in which poetry and drama have in the past opened people to the possibility of religious experience as a launch pad for advocating less wooden approaches to Christian worship today. So far from encouraging imagination and exploration, hymns and sermons now more commonly merely consolidate belief. Again, contemporary liturgy in both its music and its ceremonial fails to take seriously either current dramatic theory or the sociology of ritual. Yet this was not always so. Imagery and hymns mattered, liturgial msic encouraged a sense of drama, sermons required rhetoric. In a characteristically stimulatling and inspiringly expansive study, that ranges from ancient Greek drama to modern poetry, from the meaning of the Logos to the history of vestments, David Brown pleads for a much wider focus on the kind of factors that aid experience of God.

Book Interpretations of Poetry and Religion

Download or read book Interpretations of Poetry and Religion written by George Santayana and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1900 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following volume is composed of a number of papers written at various times and already partially printed; they are now revised and gathered together in the hope that they may lead the reader, from somewhat different points of approach, to a single idea. This idea is that religion and poetry are identical in essence, and differ merely in the way in which they are attached to practical affairs. Poetry is called religion when it intervenes in life, and religion, when it merely supervenes upon life, is seen to be nothing but poetry. It would naturally follow from this conception that religious doctrines would do well to withdraw their pretension to be dealing with matters of fact. That pretension is not only the source of the conflicts of religion with science and of the vain and bitter controversies of sects; it is also the cause of the impurity and incoherence of religion in the soul, when it seeks its sanctions in the sphere of reality, and forgets that its proper concern is to express the ideal. For the dignity of religion, like that of poetry and of every moral ideal, lies precisely in its ideal adequacy, in its fit rendering of the meanings and values of life, in its anticipation of perfection; so that the excellence of religion is due to an idealization of experience which, while making religion noble if treated as poetry, makes it necessarily false if treated as science. Its function is rather to draw from reality materials for an image of that ideal to which reality ought to conform, and to make us citizens, by anticipation, in the world we crave.
