The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook. The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation. Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

This is the first complete translation into English of all of his poems, and also the first substantial translation of a selection of his prose writings. Michael Fuller explores these questions while examining the changes in Chinese shipoetry from the late Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) to the end of the Southern Song (1127–1279), a period of profound social and cultural transformation. Shi poetry written in response to events was the dominant literary genre in Song dynasty China, serving as a central form through which literati explored meaning in their encounters with the world. By the late Northern Song, however, old models for meaning were proving inadequate, and Daoxue (Neo-Confucianism) provided an increasingly attractive new ground for understanding the self and the world. Drifting among Rivers and Lakes traces the intertwining of the practice of poetry, writings on poetics, and the debates about Daoxue that led to the cultural synthesis of the final years of the Southern Song and set the pattern for Chinese society for the next six centuries. Book excerpt: The Three Hundred Tang Poemsis an anthology of poems from the Chinese Tang dynasty, 618-907, first compiled around 1763 by Sun Zhu, 1722-1778, the Qing Dynasty scholar, also known as Hengtang Tuishi. Various later editions also exist. All editions contain over 300 poems: in this case, three hundred means not exactly 300 but refers to an estimative quantification, the ten, twenty, or more extra poems represent a sort of a good luck bonus, analogous to the baker's dozen in the West. Even more, the number 300 was a classic number for a poetry collection due to the influence of the Classic of Poetry, which was generally known as The Three Hundred Poems. The poets of the Tang shi include a number of authors ranging from the well-known and famous to obscure or anonymous poets, and even include at least one emperor. The poet with the most pieces included in this collection is Du Fu, with thirty-nine. Li Bo is a close runner-up, with thirty-four. Wang Wei has twenty-nine poems included in the anthology and Li Shangyin has twenty-four. Meng Haoran has fifteen, Wei Yingwu twelve, Liu Changqing eleven, and Du Mu ten. After that, each of the other poets' included pieces number in the single digits, however, some of these poets are quite important, such as Liu Zongyuan or Bai Juyi. Some important poets, such as Li He, are not represented at all. The ci form of Classical Chinese poetry is especially associated with the poetry of the Song Dynasty, during which it was indeed a popular poetic form. Two main categories of ci employed in Song Dynasty were xiaoling and manci, depending on the song being either short and in fast tempo or long and in slow tempo. Famous Ci Poets in Song Dynasty are Liu Yong, Ouyang Xiu, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, Zhou Bangyan, Li Qingzhao, Lu You, Xin Qiji etc.

There can never be a definitive translation of his poetry, but hopefully the translations presented here might possibly capture something of the original which the reader might appreciate, and which, at least, might serve as a reasonable introduction to the original Chinese, which is presented together with the translation. In the end, when we read the work of Li Bai, in the original or in translation, we find no real difficulty in appreciating his outlook on life, whilst his themes still find resonance with us today, either in China or elsewhere.

Jue Chen not only argues in his work that Du Fu was constructed according to particular literary and intellectual agendas of Song literati but also that conventional labels applied to Du Fu do not accurately represent this construction campaign. He also discusses how Du Fu’s image as the greatest poet sheds unique light on issues that can deepen our understanding of the subtleties in the poetic culture of Song China.
