Book Poetical Version of Nearly the Whole of the Psalms of David Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poetical Version of Nearly the Whole of the Psalms of David Classic Reprint written by Charles Wesley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Version of Nearly the Whole of the Psalms of David In celebrating the praises of David, the son of Jesse, Jesus the son of Sirach, an apocryphal writer, says, "In all his works he praised the Holy One most high, with Words of glory; with his whole heart he sung songs, and loved Him that made him. He set singers also before the altars, that by their voices they might make sweet melody, and daily sing praises in their songs. He beautified their feasts, and set in order their solemn tunes, until the end, that they might praise his holy name." (Ecclus. xlvii. 8 - 10.) The songs which David thus sung "with his whole heart" have been handed down to us in the volume of Divine inspiration with which the world is favoured; and, notwithstanding they are characterized by "as many hearse-like airs as carols," (to use the language of Lord Bacon, the great father of inductive philosophy, with reference to them, ) yet they always have been favourites with those who could make "melody in their hearts," and understood the nature of experimental religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psalter, or Psalms of David: In English Verse It is not without very great misgiving and reluctance, that this Version of the Psalms id published: such misgiving, as would yield to no sanction short of what it has been honoured with. It was undertaken, in the first instance, with a serious apprehension, which has since grown into a full conviction, that the thing attempted is, strictly speaking, impossible: it being obvious, from the structure of the Hebrew Psalms, that they were intended not for singing, but for chanting. The system of parallel members and clauses, on which they are constructed throughout, seems to have been even providentially framed, (if one may venture on such conjectures, ) with a view to the expression in other languages of their form as well as substance, (both alike inspired, ) with as little loss as possible of meaning and beauty.
