Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Recreation These "Poetical Recreations," as, for the want of a better title, the author has chosen to style them, are the result of leisure moments in the midst of other and more important avocations. They are a selection of what have appeared, as they were composed, in one or other of our local periodicals, wherein it was expected their ephemeral existence would have terminated. And now it is only in consequence of the continued solicitation of many friends that in their present shape and under the same nom de plume they are again put into type. Book A Dictionary of Sexual Language and Imagery in Shakespearean and Stuart Literature

Download or read book A Dictionary of Sexual Language and Imagery in Shakespearean and Stuart Literature written by Gordon Williams and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-09-13 with total page 1650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an alphabetical listing of sexual language and locution in 16th and 17th-century English, this book draws especially on the more immediate literary modes: the theatre, broadside ballads, newsbooks and pamphlets. The aim is to assist the reader of Shakespearean and Stuart literature to identify metaphors and elucidate meanings; and more broadly, to chart, through illustrative quotation, shifting and recurrent linguistic patterns. Linguistic habit is closely bound up with the ideas and assumptions of a period, and the figurative language of sexuality across this period is highly illuminating of socio-cultural change as well as linguistic development. Thus the entries offer as much to those concerned with social history and the history of ideas as to the reader of Shakespeare or Dryden.

Book Botanical Poetics

  • Author : Jessica Rosenberg
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2022-10-25
  • ISBN : 1512823341
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Botanical Poetics written by Jessica Rosenberg and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the middle years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the number of books published with titles that described themselves as flowers, gardens, or forests more than tripled. During those same years, English printers turned out scores of instructional manuals on gardening and husbandry, retailing useful knowledge to a growing class of literate landowners and pleasure gardeners. Both trends, Jessica Rosenberg shows, reflected a distinctive style of early modern plant-thinking, one that understood both plants and poems as composites of small pieces—slips or seeds to be recirculated by readers and planters. Botanical Poetics brings together studies of ecology, science, literary form, and the material text to explore how these developments transformed early modern conceptions of nature, poetic language, and the printed book. Drawing on little-studied titles in horticulture and popular print alongside poetry by Shakespeare, Spenser, and others, Rosenberg reveals how early modern print used a botanical idiom to anticipate histories of its own reading and reception, whether through replanting, uprooting, or fantasies of common property and proliferation. While our conventional narratives of English literary culture in this period see reading as an increasingly private practice, and literary production as more and more of an authorial domain, Botanical Poetics uncovers an alternate tradition: of commonplaces and common ground, of slips of herbs and poetry circulated, shared, and multiplied.

Book Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages written by Glending Olson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies attitudes toward secular literature during the later Middle Ages. Exploring two related medieval justifications of literary pleasure—one finding hygienic or therapeutic value in entertainment, and another stressing the psychological and ethical rewards of taking time out from work in order to refresh oneself—Glending Olson reveals that, contrary to much recent opinion, many medieval writers and thinkers accepted delight and enjoyment as valid goals of literature without always demanding moral profit as well. Drawing on a vast amount of primary material, including contemporary medical manuscripts and printed texts, Olson discusses theatrics, humanist literary criticism, prologues to romances and fabliaux, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He offers an extended examination of the framing story of Boccaccio's Decameron. Although intended principally as a contribution to the history of medieval literary theory and criticism, Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages makes use of medical, psychological, and sociological insights that lead to a fuller understanding of late medieval secular culture.
