Book Poetic Song Verse

Download or read book Poetic Song Verse written by Mike Mattison and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetic Song Verse: Blues-Based Popular Music and Poetry invokes and critiques the relationship between blues-based popular music and poetry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume is anchored in music from the 1960s, when a concentration of artists transformed modes of popular music from entertainment to art-that-entertains. Musician Mike Mattison and literary historian Ernest Suarez synthesize a wide range of writing about blues and rock—biographies, histories, articles in popular magazines, personal reminiscences, and a selective smattering of academic studies—to examine the development of a relatively new literary genre dubbed by the authors as “poetic song verse.” They argue that poetic song verse was nurtured in the fifties and early sixties by the blues and in Beat coffee houses, and matured in the mid-to-late sixties in the art of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gil Scott-Heron, Van Morrison, and others who used voice, instrumentation, arrangement, and production to foreground semantically textured, often allusive, and evocative lyrics that resembled and engaged poetry. Among the questions asked in Poetic Song Verse are: What, exactly, is this new genre? What were its origins? And how has it developed? How do we study and assess it? To answer these questions, Mattison and Suarez engage in an extended discussion of the roots of the relationship between blues-based music and poetry and address how it developed into a distinct literary genre. Unlocking the combination of richly textured lyrics wedded to recorded music reveals a dynamism at the core of poetic song verse that can often go unrealized in what often has been considered merely popular entertainment. This volume balances historical details and analysis of particular songs with accessibility to create a lively, intelligent, and cohesive narrative that provides scholars, teachers, students, music influencers, and devoted fans with an overarching perspective on the poetic power and blues roots of this new literary genre.

Book excerpt: Killer Verse: Poems of Murder and Mayhem is a spine-tingling collection of terrifically creepy poems about the deadly art of murder. The villains and victims who populate these pages range from Cain and Abel and Bluebeard and his wives to Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, and Mafia hit men. The literary forms they inhabit are just as varied, from the colorful melodramas of old Scottish ballads to the hard-boiled poetry of twentieth-century noir, from lighthearted comic riffs to profound poetic musings on murder. Robert Browning, Thomas Hardy, W. H. Auden, Stevie Smith, Mark Doty, Frank Bidart, Toi Derricotte, Lynn Emanuel, and Cornelius Eady are only a few of the many poets, old and new, whose work is captured in this heart-stopping—and criminally entertaining—collection.

Book excerpt: I have attempted to include poems that are easily understood, readily associated with one's daily life and circumstances. Because of it's diversity, hopefully this book will be appealing to everyone. I have also attempted to share my own life's experiences, good, bad and indifferent, in a way that is clear and tasteful to the reader. Mostly all of my work deals with reality, my personal concept of how things are, the way I think things should be, and ultimately, the way I think things should turn out. I am fortunate enough to have had parents that were not only christians but ministers. Because of my religious backgroud and upbringing, my insights are critical when engaged in relationships of husband and wife, family, and friends and associates. I hope when you read my work, you will enjoy it as much as I did creating it. Maybe in some small way, you too may be inspired to reach out to someone, if you haven't already. My philosophy is there is no better medicine for the soul then caring.

Book excerpt: Poetic Verses contains exactly that, verses of poetry along with some song lyrics. This poetry book is of its own kind. It shows you how my heart beats when I'm in love or in agony over a lost loved one. My poems don't forecast the future, or make you think "What is the Poet really trying to say here?" They simply show you just how I was feeling during a specific time or relationship in my life. That's what makes this book such a good read Everyone can relate to a good poem about lust, pain, love, and yearning for someone you can't have. A few of my poems, I've been told, have actually given insight and guidance into people's own relationships. I hope that my book of poems will show you how it feels to be loved, hurt, excited, bummed out or plain old happy to be alive I was only 11 years old when my grandpa, to whom I was very close, passed away. I cried my heart out for a whole day (that's similar to an entire year according to adults). I wanted to remember him, and I wanted my family to know how much he meant to me. At his wake, my mom read the poem that I wrote in his honor. It wasn't a great poem, but, it was the thought that counted. From that point on, poetry was my outlet for my, normally heart-wrenching, emotions. All I did was write poem, after poem, after poem on my dad's old Macintosh. We moved not long after grandpa died; and the Mac got tossed, along with all my poetry on its hard drive. Since then, I grew up to become the 26 year-old Poet I am today.

A Russian emigre who began writing in English after his forties, Nabokov was a trilingual author, equally competent in Russian, English, and French. A gifted and tireless translator, he bridged the gap between languages nimbly and joyously. Here, collected for the first time in one volume as Nabokov always wished, are many of his English translations of Russian verse, presented next to the Russian originals. Here, also, are some of his notes on the dangers and thrills of translation. With an introduction by Brian Boyd, author of "Vladimir Nabokov, "a prize-winning two-volume biography," ""Verses and Versions" is a momentous and authoritative contribution to Nabokov's literary legacy.
