Book Hassaniya Arabic Mali

Download or read book Hassaniya Arabic Mali written by Jeffrey Heath and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most countries of the Maghreb, the local Arabic vernaculars are increasingly inundated by vocabulary, grammatical forms, and even syntax from literary Arabic (used in mosques, schools, and media), and oral poetry is receding except for popular song genres. The Arabs of the TimbuktuGao region, by contrast, are a peripheral linguistic minority with little exposure to literary Arabic. They continue to speak a relatively pure beduin Arabic, closely related to varieties spoken in Mauritania and southern Algeria. These texts, recorded in 1986-1989 and presented here in transcription along with facing English translations, document this language, as well as the remarkable verbal culture of these people. The ethnographic texts cover such topics as the annual salt caravans from Timbuktu to Taoudenni, the perils of the pastoral life, and adjustments to city life. The "poetic" texts include recitations of locally familiar poems, typically integrated into narratives or otherwise contextualized. The poems, consisting of quatrains (gaf) and more extended poems (tal'a), are often satirical or even bawdy in nature.Jeffrey Heath is Professor of Linguistics and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan. He is the author of many fieldworkbased works, including grammars, dictionaries, and text collections on languages of Australia and on Songhay languages of West Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the literary, historical and methodological issues which have been raised by the appearance of psalms in narrative contexts of the Hebrew Bible. The narrative role of each psalm is explored to determine the reasons for its present position. The study of each psalm's narrative role leads to a re-evaluation of the evidence for its secondary status in the prose context. The results of each separate analysis are compared to see what larger literary, historical and methodological patterns emerge.

Book Alfred Lord Tennyson Selected Poetry

Download or read book Alfred Lord Tennyson Selected Poetry written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago Tennyson had begun to be dismissed as a poet whose work embodied everything the modern world was looking to leave behind. He still seems to readers to embody the substance of the Victorian era more fully than any other poet—but nowadays that is counted in his favor. Critics continue to find layers of complexity in poems once thought simplistic—while appreciating with fresh ears Tennyson’s aural mastery. This new edition includes the two long poems In Memoriam and Maud: A Monodrama in their entirety, all the short poems for which Tennyson remains famous, and a generous selection of his lesser-known poetry, together with a concise introduction to the poet and his work, and substantial headnotes for In Memoriam, Maud, and Idylls of the King. Unlike other editions that provide a selection of Tennyson’s work, this one includes both marginal glosses of obscure or archaic words and phrases, and extensive annotations at the bottom of each page. Appendices of visual material are also included.

Book The Making of Early Chinese Classical Poetry

Download or read book The Making of Early Chinese Classical Poetry written by Stephen Owen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the centuries, early Chinese classical poetry became embedded in a chronological account with great cultural resonance and came to be transmitted in versions accepted as authoritative. But modern scholarship has questioned components of the account and cast doubt on the accuracy of received texts. The result has destabilized the study of early Chinese poetry. This study adopts a double approach to the poetry composed between the end of the first century B.C.E. and the third century C.E. First, it examines extant material from this period synchronically, as if it were not historically arranged, with some poems attached to authors and some not. By setting aside putative differences of author and genre, Stephen Owen argues, we can see that this was “one poetry,” created from a shared poetic repertoire and compositional practices. Second, it considers how the scholars of the late fifth and early sixth centuries selected this material and reshaped it to produce the standard account of classical poetry. As Owen shows, early poetry comes to us through reproduction—reproduction by those who knew the poem and transmitted it, by musicians who performed it, and by scribes and anthologists—all of whom changed texts to suit their needs."

Book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry written by Joseph Black and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 1170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for courses with a major focus on poetry during the Romantic period, this volume includes all the poetry selections from Volume 4 of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, along with a number of works newly edited for this volume. The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry maintains the Broadview Anthology of British Literature’s characteristic balance of canonical favorites and lesser-known gems, featuring a breadth of poetry from William Blake to Phillis Wheatley, from Ebenezer Elliott to Felicia Hemans. To give a sense of the full sweep of the Romantic period, the anthology incorporates important early figures from William Collins to Phillis Wheatley, as well as works by Victorians—such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson—for whom Romanticism was a formative force. “Contexts” sections provide valuable background on cultural matters such as “The Natural and the Sublime” and “The Abolition of Slavery,” while the companion website offers a wealth of additional resources and primary works. Longer works newly prepared for the bound book include Byron’s Manfred and The Giaour, Keats’s Hyperion, and substantial selections from Wordsworth’s fourteen-book Prelude; authors newly added for this volume include Hannah Cowley, Hannah More, Ann Yearsley, Robert Southey, and Thomas Moore.

Book Horace on Poetry

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. O. Brink
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-06-09
  • ISBN : 0521283078
  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book Horace on Poetry written by C. O. Brink and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of Professor Brink's three-volume commentary on Horace's literary epistles, originally published in 1963. The volumes' chief focus is the primary source of Horatian literary criticism: the Epistula ad Pisones, known as the Ars Poetica to most ancient and modern readers. Volume I of Horace on Poetry looks at the structure of the Ars Poetica, Neoptolemus and literary criticism, and the criticism and satire of Horace. Professor Brink's overriding argument is that the common dismissal of the Ars as a disorderly piece fails to take into account Horace's architectonic style. For Brink, this disorder is itself part of an intrinsic poetic design. The complete three-volume commentary constitutes one of the fullest scholarly commentaries on Horace's critical writing. It will continue to be of great value to all with an interest in this much-debated subject.
