Book Rhymes in the Flow

Download or read book Rhymes in the Flow written by Macklin Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its global popularity, rap has received little scholarly attention in terms of its poetic features. Rhymes in the Flow systematically analyzes the poetics (rap beats, rhythms, rhymes, verse and song structures) of many notable rap songs to provide new insights on rap artistry and performance. Defining and describing the features of what rappers commonly call flow, the authors establish a theory of the rap line as they trace rap’s deepest roots and stylistic evolution—from Anglo-Saxon poetry to Lil Wayne—and contextualize its complex poetics. Rhymes in the Flow helps explain rap’s wide appeal by focusing primarily on its rhythmic and thematic power, while also claiming its historical, cultural, musical, and poetic importance.

Book Poetic Process

  • Author : W. G. Kudszus
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1995-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803227279
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Poetic Process written by W. G. Kudszus and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georg Trakl (1887–1914) has emerged as one of the most influential poets of the century. Kudszus both explores and participates in the relentless process of Trakl’s writing. Presumptions of objectivity, authority, dialogue, and coherence are questioned in a discourse that also involves Martin Heidegger’s philosophical reflections on Trakl, C. G. Jung’s self-analytical reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses, and the Bluebeard tale as related by Charles Perrault. Faithful to its title, Poetic Process activates key issues of twentieth-century poetry—terror, pain, madness, imagination unbound—through a dynamically self-reflective inquiry. Under the impact of the poetic text, this investigation engages in a continuous refinement and transformation of its own critical stance. Poetic Process draws on the ability of poetry to explore uncharted realms of the human condition. The result is a contribution to the knowledge of poetic language and effects.

Book Flow Chart

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Ashbery
  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2014-09-09
  • ISBN : 1480459097
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Flow Chart written by John Ashbery and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quintessentially American epic poem that rewrites all the rules of epic poetry—starting with the one that says epic poetry can’t be about the writing of epic poetry itself The appearance of Flow Chart in 1991 marked the kickoff of a remarkably prolific period in John Ashbery’s long career, a decade during which he published seven all-new books of poetry as well as a collected series of lectures on poetic form and practice. So it comes as no surprise that this book-length poem—one of the longest ever written by an American poet—reads like a rocket launch: charged, propulsive, mesmerizing, a series of careful explosions that, together, create a radical forward motion. It’s been said that Flow Chart was written in response to a dare of sorts: Artist and friend Trevor Winkfield suggested that Ashbery write a poem of exactly one hundred pages, a challenge that Ashbery took up with plans to complete the poem in one hundred days. But the celebrated work that ultimately emerged from its squared-off origin story was one that the poet himself called “a continuum, a diary.” In six connected, constantly surprising movements of free verse—with the famous “sunflower” double sestina thrown in, just to reinforce the poem’s own multivarious logic—Ashbery’s poem maps a path through modern American consciousness with all its attendant noise, clamor, and signal: “Words, however, are not the culprit. They are at worst a placebo, / leading nowhere (though nowhere, it must be added, can sometimes be a cozy / place, preferable in many cases to somewhere).”

Book Creativity and the Poetic Mind

Download or read book Creativity and the Poetic Mind written by Jean Tobin and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity and the Poetic Mind mingles the voices of well-known writers such as Nikki Giovanni, Donald Hall, John Koethe, Marge Piercy, and Robert Pinsky with newer voices, and includes engaging excerpts from interviews with thirty-eight American poets. Within a sustained argument about creative states of mind, this book innovatively presents and explores the technique of «going to the place» as more reliable in writing poetry than waiting for «inspiration». It explains why poets frequently believe that talking about their own poetry may damage their creativity and why, for centuries, inspiration has seemed to come from somewhere beyond the poet. In addition, it discusses the practicality of poets' thinking that «being creative» and «writing poetry» are two separate skills: inspiration is unreliable, but experienced poets create daily.

Book A Fine Canopy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alison Swan
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2020-10-06
  • ISBN : 0814348076
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book A Fine Canopy written by Alison Swan and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection that focuses on the natural world, these are poems of wilderness and of wildness. Alison Swan's collection of poems, A Fine Canopy, illustrates how the natural world envelops and encloses us with so many beautiful things: crowns of leaves, the ubiquitous blue sky, our luminous moon, and snow. So much snow. An ecopoet whose writing shows her advocacy for natural resources, in this collection Swan calls the reader to witness, appreciate, and sustain this world before it becomes too late. These poems were written out of an impulse to track down wisdom in the open air, outside of the noisy world of cars and commerce. Swan seeks insight on shores and in scraps of woods and fields—especially on four particular peninsulas: Michigan's upper and lower, Florida, and Washington state's Olympic—and also inside motherhood, which might be the wildest place of all. These are poems about the interconnection of all things, and "knowing things we cannot see." A journey through seasons with a soundtrack of birdsong, Swan's words are incredibly sensory. The reader is made to feel the weight of muddy jeans, the jolt at the tug of a dog's leash, and to see the bright flash of a cardinal's red plumage. Swan's poems remind us that although we all want to make a mark on our world, the smaller the better: stepping into fresh snow, dashing through forests atop dry leaves, laying wet bodies on warm concrete. These quiet interactions with places are as hopeful as they are harmless. Without necessarily tackling the topics head-on, A Fine Canopy evokes the devastation of climate change and the destruction of natural resources. This book engages deeply with the other-than-human to express and investigate alarm, dismay, anger, admiration, adoration in what feels like the end of the world unless we begin to think outside the box. These poems will carry weight with all readers of poetry, especially those who are interested in ecopoetry and connecting with the world around them.

Book Poetry and Voice

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephanie Norgate
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2013-02-21
  • ISBN : 1443846791
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Poetry and Voice written by Stephanie Norgate and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry and Voice, with a foreword by Helen Dunmore, is a book of essays which fuses critical and creative treatments of poetic voice. Some contributors focus on critical explorations of voice in work by poets such as John Ashbery, Simon Armitage, Eavan Boland, Carol Ann Duffy, Arun Kolatkar, Don McKay and Dragica Rajčić, and on the musical voices of the lyric tradition and of poetry itself. Vicki Feaver, Jane Griffiths, Philip Gross, Waqas Khwaja, Lesley Saunders and David Swann reflect on their own poetic processes of composition, and the development of the voices of childhood, old age, migration, landscape, bilinguality, and imprisonment. Laurel Cohen-Pfister and Tatjana Bijelić examine the nature of poetic voice in exile, the need for fresh voices after war and new spaces in which poetic voices can be heard. In this international collection, the contributors give rare and generous insights into inner poetic processes and external effects. They engage with artistic debates about developing, losing and appropriating voice in poetry and approach the question of what is ‘finding a voice’ in poetry from multiple angles. The book will interest literary critics, poets, lecturers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students of literature, poetry and creative writing.

Book Poetic Designs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Adams
  • Publisher : Broadview Press
  • Release : 1997-04-07
  • ISBN : 9781551111292
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Poetic Designs written by Stephen Adams and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1997-04-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous introductions to poetry and prosody available, but none at once so comprehensive and so accessible as this. With the increasing emphasis on free verse, the past generation has developed a widespread impression that the study of poetic meter is old fashioned—or even that form ‘doesn’t matter’ in poetry. It is an impression that has not been dispelled by the emphasis of some of the existing texts in the area on forms that are now rare or outmoded. The irony is that simultaneously in the past decade interest in formal matters among many poets and literary scholars has been on the increase; the reality is that prosody is today on the cutting edge of literary studies. Stephen Adams’ text provides a full treatment of traditional topics, from the iambic pentameter through other accentual-syllabic rhythms (trochaic, dactylic and so on) and covering as well other metrical types, stanza structure, the sonnet and other standard forms. Adams also includes a variety of topics not covered in most other introductions to the topic; perhaps most significantly, he provides a full chapter on form in free verse. Moreover, he treats rhyme extensively and includes a comprehensive chapter on literary figures. Poetic Designs is thus much more that an introduction to prosody; it is a concise but comprehensive introduction to the nature of poetry in English. It is a book for the general reader and the aspiring writer as well as for the student, a book intended (in the words of the author) to help ‘heighten the experience of poetry.’

Book The Poetic Priestly Source

Download or read book The Poetic Priestly Source written by Jason M. H. Gaines and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying criteria for the identification of biblical Hebrew poetry, Jason M. H. Gaines distinguishes a nearly complete poetic Priestly stratum in the Pentateuch (“Poetic P”), coherent in literary, narrative, and ideological terms, from a later prose redaction (“Prosaic P”), which is fragmentary, supplemental, and distinct in thematic and theological concern. Gaines describes the whole of the “Poetic P” source and offers a Hebrew reconstruction of the document. This dramatically innovative understanding of the history of the Priestly composition opens up new vistas in the study of the Pentateuch.

Book Language Land and Belonging Poetic Inquiries

Download or read book Language Land and Belonging Poetic Inquiries written by Natalie Honein and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes up themes emergent from the 7th International Symposium on Poetic Inquiry (ISPI) which invited participants to reflect on the United Nations Declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. In this refereed collection, Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors use poetic inquiry to explore the importance of their ancestral languages and lands, and consider the Indigenous languages and peoples of the lands where they live. Situated in diverse global contexts, poet-researchers examine the intersectionality of their languages, their lands, and their sense of belonging. They offer relational understandings of, and articulate obligations for, their environment and communities. Through stories of shared generational pain and renewal, each author brings the reader into their world of learning and growth. They do this through discourses of belonging and relational responsibilities that tie them to a place, a genealogy. As a method of study that incorporates poetry into academic research, poetic inquiry is concerned with particularity, complexity, and transformations. Making research more visceral and evocative, it invites researchers to examine and engage with the knowledge they seek through a continual process of questioning, welcoming, and awareness. In this volume, poetic inquiry helps to honor languages and histories taken for granted; it allows looking back in order to reexamine, redefine, and make sense of the present and its shortcomings while reimagining a different future. This work seeks to reclaim, through poetic inquiry, wisdom of language, land, and belonging.

Book Writing African American Women 2 volumes

Download or read book Writing African American Women 2 volumes written by Elizabeth A. Beaulieu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 1035 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have had a complex experience in African American culture. The first work of its kind, this encyclopedia approaches African American literature from a Women's Studies perspective. While Yolanda Williams Page's Encyclopedia of African American Women Writers provides biographical entries on more than 150 literary figures, this book is much broader in scope. Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries on African American women writers, as well as on male writers who have treated women in their works. Entries on genres, periods, themes, characters, historical events, texts, places, and other topics are included as well. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and relates its subject to the overall experience of women in African American literature. Entries cite works for further reading, and the encyclopedia closes with a selected, general bibliography. African American culture is enormously diverse, and the experience of women in African American society is especially complex. Women were among the first African American writers, and works by black women writers are popular among students and general readers alike. At the same time, African American women have been oppressed, and texts by black male authors represent women in a variety of ways. The first of its kind, this encyclopedia approaches African American literature from a Women's Studies perspective, and thus significantly illuminates the African American cultural experience through literary works. Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries, written by numerous expert contributors. In addition to covering male and female African American authors, the encyclopedia also discusses themes, major works and characters, genres, periods, historical events, places, and other topics. Included are entries on such authors as: ; Maya Angelou ; James Baldwin ; Frederick Douglass ; Nikki Giovanni ; June Jordan ; Claude McKay ; Ishmael Reed ; Sojourner Truth ; Phillis Wheatley ; And many others. The many topical entries cover: ; Black Feminism ; Black Nationalism ; Conjuring ; Children's and Young Adult Literature ; Detective Fiction ; Epistolary Novel ; Motherhood ; Sexuality ; Spirituality ; Stereotypes ; And many others.
