Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poseidon tells the story of a human from beginning to end. From the "Big Bang" to the appearance of "Homo Sapiens," every human being has been in this world in different forms. Once he finally makes it into this world in the shape we better recognize, he starts a "Long Journey," which is going to teach him many lessons. At the beginning, the attachment to possessions, such as family and place, starts creating a sense of belonging, which increases, until eventually the individual begins experiencing "Love." This feeling develops until there is a breaking point. Here is where the person usually starts going downhill, and there is a moment when he starts to be critical and creates a stronger personality with new goals. Love may survive, but the individual is involved in a very questioning view of the "Present Days." Ultimately, society provokes him to think in what the author refers as "Paradise Collapse." At this moment, this human being enters a complaining mood, a position where he does not agree with the world and he disagrees with many ideals or situations. For a moment, the person enters a melting pot of ideas, which confuses him to a point that he realizes that the years are gone. In a more relaxed mood, he is aware of that situation and decides to look back in time and analyze the different chapters of his life. Finally, he prepares for the next step, "The Return to Neptune." From a literary perspective, Poseidon is a combination of different kinds of poetry with a great variety of subjects. In Poseidon, the author plays with form and space, giving the page a significant value. The author includes the long and short prose, abstract poems, allegoric, alphabet, ballad, event, free verse, line, list, madrigal, nonsense verse, oulipo, pantoum, sonnet and sestina forms, besides a rich variety of subjects such as science, metaphysics, love, philosophy, contemporary and religious topics, which are elaborated in this art form. The author uses margins and positioning of his lines to resemble his ideals.

Book The Poems of Hesiod

Download or read book The Poems of Hesiod written by Hesiod and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Theogony is one of the most important mythical texts to survive from antiquity, and we devote the first section to it. It tells of the creation of the present world order under the rule of almighty Zeus. The Works and Days, in the second section, describes a bitter dispute between Hesiod and his brother over the disposition of their father's property, a theme that allows Hesiod to range widely over issues of right and wrong. The Shield of Herakles, whose centerpiece is a long description of a work of art, is not by Hesiod, at least most of it, but it was always attributed to him in antiquity. It is Hesiodic in style and has always formed part of the Hesiodic corpus. It makes up the third section of this book"--Provided by publisher.

Book Greek Poems to the Gods

Download or read book Greek Poems to the Gods written by Barry B. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Greek hymnic tradition translated beautifully and accessibly. The hymn—as poetry, as craft, as a tool for worship and philosophy—was a vital art form throughout antiquity. Although the Homeric Hymns have long been popular, other equally important collections have not been readily accessible to students eager to learn about ancient poetry. In reading hymns, we also gain valuable insight into life in the classical world. In this collection, early Homeric Hymns of uncertain authorship appear along with the carefully wrought hymns of the great Hellenistic poet and courtier Callimachus; the mystical writings attributed to the legendary poet Orpheus, written as Christianity was taking over the ancient world; and finally, the hymns of Proclus, the last great pagan philosopher of antiquity, from the fifth century AD, whose intellectual influence throughout western culture has been profound. Greek Poems to the Gods distills over a thousand years of the ancient Greek hymnic tradition into a single volume. Acclaimed translator Barry B. Powell brings these fabulous texts to life in English, hewing closely to the poetic beauty of the original Greek. His superb introductions and notes give readers essential context, making the hymns as accessible to a beginner approaching them for the first time as to an advanced student continuing to explore their secrets. Brilliant illustrations from ancient art enliven and enrichen the experience of reading these poems.

  • Publisher : MacLehose Press

Download or read book Letters to Poseidon written by Cees Nooteboom and published by MacLehose Press. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that during his abortive campaign to invade Britannia, the infamous Roman emperor Caligula ordered his legions into the surf to attack Poseidon and claim seashells as trophies of war. Cees Nooteboom is considerably more thoughtful in his relationship with the god of the sea. As autumn falls each year, Nooteboom writes Poseidon a letter requesting permission to return to his home in Minorca the following spring. Of course, it would be the height of discourtesy if Nooteboom's letters were no more than a series of demands. So Cees takes the opportunity to seek the wisdom of the trident-wielding deity, and to offer the god updates about his own life and thoughts. At once playful and poignant, beautiful and at times slightly bizarre, this masterful exploration of humankind's relationship with the sea uses the minutiae of everyday life to illuminate the broadest questions of human existence, all couched in the lapidary prose of one of Europe's outstanding stylists.

Book The Iliad the Poem of Zeus

Download or read book The Iliad the Poem of Zeus written by Pietro Pucci and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholarly tendency has too often weakened the conspicuous novelty and originality that characterizes Zeus in the Iliad. This book remedies that tendency and depicts the extraordinary figure of Zeus: lord (or impersonation) of lightning and thunders, exclusive master of human destiny --and therefore of human history—and chief of Olympus. This unique personality endowed with polyvalent powers represents itself the conflict between superhuman moral indifference for mortal destiny and anthropomorphic feelings for human beings: he both preordains the death of his son and weeps on his demise. Zeus embodies the Mysterium tremendum. This new Zeus cannot glance at the past image that the tradition painted of him without smiling at its simplicity and disrespect: a parodic or amusing tone surrounds him as he refers or is referred to aspects of his traditional image. The great characters of the Poem give two wise responses to Zeus, lord of destiny: "heroic death" or serene acceptance. We, the readers, are expected to react in the same way.
