Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems to Emma Those who can thy charms may tell; 'tis not I who dares to breathe thee, Strains Whose glowing thoughts may wreathe thee With that halo of perfections Which should round thy temples dwell But that Heaven's own smile may bless thee, More than words can here express thee, And the Cherub's flaming buckler, From all harm may guard thee well, Is the wish that this would tell. And that round thee and above thee, Still to love thee, ever love thee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Emma Lazarus, Vol. 1 of 2 Over fifteen hundred lines of blank verse, in two weeks; Bertha, in three and a half. We have said that Emma Lazarus was a horn singer, but she did not sing, like a bird, for joy of being alive; and of being young, alas I there is no hint in these youthful effusions, except inasmuch as this unrelieved gloom, this ignorance of values, so to speak, is a Sign of youth, common especially. Download or read book The Poems of Emma Lazarus Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Emma Lazarus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Emma Lazarus, Vol. 2 of 2 Not while the snow-shroud round dead earth is rolled, And naked branches point to frozen skies, When orchards burn their lamps of fiery gold, The grape glows like a jewel, and the corn A sea of beauty and abundance lies, Then the new year is born. Look where the mother of the months uplifts In the green clearness of the unsunned West, Her ivory horn of plenty, dropping gifts, Cool, harvest feeding dews, fine winnowed light; Tired labor with fruition, joy and rest Profusely to requite. Blow, Israel, the sacred cornet Call Back to thy courts whatever faint heart throb With thine ancestral blood, thy need craves all. The red, dark year is dead, the year just born Leads on from anguish wrought by priest and mob, To what undreamed-oi morn? For never yet, since on the holy height, The Temple's marble walls of white and green Carved like the sea-waves, fell, and the world's light Went out in darkness, never was the year Greater with portent and with promise seen, Than this eve now and here. Even as the Prophet promised, so your tent Hath been enlarged unto earth's farthest rim. To snow-capped Sierras from vast steppes ye went, Through fire and blood and tempest-tossing wave, For freedom to proclaim and worship Him, Mighty to slay and save. High above flood and fire ye held the scroll, Out of the depths ye published still the Word. NO bodily pang had power to swerve your soul Ye, in a cynic age of crumbling faiths, Lived to bear Witness to the living Lord, Or died a thousand deaths. In two divided streams the exiles part, One rolling homeward to its ancient source, One rushing sunward with fresh will, new heart. By each the truth is spread, the law unfurled, Each separate soul contains the nation's force. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fulfilment of a Promise: By Which Poems, by Emma Willard, Are Published, and Affectionately Inscribed to Her Past and Present Pupils Asou'r to cross an ocean for the first time, I feel, no doubt, the possibility of never returning, more fully than those to whom voyaging is familiar. On this occasion, I have set myself to do, as far as possible, every thing which in case of sudden death it would be desirable that I had done; and in partien lar to leave upon my conscience, as far as may be, no obligation unfulfilled. Along with making my will, I have gathered this little volume for the press - all but the first article, which I have written in two days and two nights, amidst the preparation for my departure, which takes place to-morrow morning, the bustle of a new-york boarding-house, and the kind parting calls of affectionate friends. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Prose Writings of Mrs. Emma C. Embury But to those who think deeply, and feel vividly, expression is a necessity of their being. They must speak or die. Some find their utterance in the interchange of socialities, some in discours ing elegant music; some speak in the wordless tints of painting; some few work out the ideal of their souls in the enduring marble, and some send forth their thoughts, winged by poesy, to the far winds of heaven. Yet there are still left many to whom are denied all these resources. There are some who have all the elements of power within them, but have never had their lips touched with the live coal from the altar, which was to the pro phet both inspiration and expression. There are some who seem, like Zacharias, to be struck dumb by the very power which brings the promise of blessing: some to whom self-distrust is an incubus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transition: A Remembrance of Emma Whiting This book is not written to magnify an individual, but to illustrate a principle. Its drift is, to show how a life Which is genial and earnest on earth, may be sacred and safe for the sky -and so, secure the resumption of the real charms Of earth, in Heaven. It is a life, flushing in its brief sojourn, with the earnestness Of this world, but advancing, with marked celerity, towards the next. All the thoughts, here arranged, Whether expressed in verse, or prose, by letter, or by the meditations Of solitude, will be found to take a hearty, happy, hold Of the scenes about us, and to put themselves in sympathy with the most eager and tender sentiments of the young. This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poems of Emma Lazarus, Volume 1 by Emma Lazarus One hesitates to lift the veil and throw the light upon a life so hidden and a personality so withdrawn as that of Emma Lazarus; but while her memory is fresh, and the echo of her songs still lingers in these pages, we feel it a duty to call up her presence once more, and to note the traits that made it remarkable and worthy to shine out clearly before the world. Of dramatic episode or climax in her life there is none; outwardly all was placid and serene, like an untroubled stream whose depths alone hold the strong, quick tide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Hymns We are sure some of the lyrics in this little cluster of songs, those who love Jesus will keep on singing while time lasts. Their author was a man Of letters and of logic. But neither letters nor logic could make room enough for his religious fervor, his deep spiritual insight, his winged imagination. The profoundest depths of Christian experience he put in melodious verse, and sang them with heart and lips. And the chaste diction, so deft, so apposite, the choice of words, the calm, sweet maj esty of style, and the tenderness, the pathos, the reverent devoutness, the humility and the trust of these precious lyrics, mark at once the man of culture and the man of God. Book Emma Embury Poet of the Heart

Download or read book Emma Embury Poet of the Heart written by Charles Russell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Call her majestic. The most popular woman poet of America’s 19th Century literary Renaissance. Her works were prodigious, inclusive, democratic. She published more than four-hundred poems, novels, and essays during her lifetime. She contributed poems to The Knickerbocker Magazine, The Lady’s Companion, Columbian, Godey’s Lady’s Book, Graham’s Magazine, and Religious Souvenir. Her story, Pictures of Early Life, was applauded as "highly interesting and instructive; and of a character which should place it in the hands of youth.” In 1845 Edgar Allan Poe published her “Thoughts of a Silent Man” essays in his periodical Broadway Journal. Later. In “The Literati of New York City,” a scholarly article he wrote for the August 1846 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, he classed Emma as one of the principal writers of the time. A precursor of feminism, she wrote, “If I were a man, as, thank God, I am not, for among my many blessings I rank first that of being a woman,” and gave “An Address on Female Education” championing higher education for women that was reprinted in Woman and Higher Education, a collection essays by founders of the first women’s colleges. Her “Essay on American Literature,” was the first to propose that America should support a literary class in society and a national literature. Her skills extended beyond excellence as a writer. She played the piano and other musical instruments, sang in a lovely mezzo-soprano voice, and painted exquisite watercolors for her book Nature’s Gems, the first book on American wildflowers.
