Book Poetry Pictures and Popular Publishing

Download or read book Poetry Pictures and Popular Publishing written by Lorraine Janzen Kooistra and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poetry, Pictures, and Popular Publishing eminent Rossetti scholar Lorraine Janzen Kooistra demonstrates the cultural centrality of a neglected artifact: the Victorian illustrated gift book. Turning a critical lens on “drawing-room books” as both material objects and historical events, Kooistra reveals how the gift book’s visual/verbal form mediated “high” and popular art as well as book and periodical publication. A composite text produced by many makers, the poetic gift book was designed for domestic space and a female audience; its mode of publication marks a significant moment in the history of authorship, reading, and publishing. With rigorous attention to the gift book’s aesthetic and ideological features, Kooistra analyzes the contributions of poets, artists, engravers, publishers, and readers and shows how its material form moved poetry into popular culture. Drawing on archival and periodical research, she offers new readings of Eliza Cook, Adelaide Procter, and Jean Ingelow and shows the transatlantic reach of their verses. Boldly resituating Tennyson’s works within the gift-book economy he dominated, Kooistra demonstrates how the conditions of corporate authorship shaped the production and receptionof the laureate’s verses at the peak of his popularity. Poetry, Pictures, and Popular Publishing changes the map of poetry’s place—in all its senses—in Victorian everyday life and consumer culture.

Book excerpt: "Oasis" is a collection of Bob Grawi's latest poems in blank verse. It functions both as a memoir and a compilation of the many insights experienced during his life while engaged in other things... Subjects range from the mystic to the mundane. Many poems featuring sailing, music, and travels in Italy. They also cover the full spectrum of the experiences in the life of an artist. These include the indelible experiences of childhood, insights into the nature of things, and portraits in verse of remarkable people he has known. The flavor of the whole collection is multifaceted and varied and is a refreshing immersion in an uncommon sensibility. This book is his fourth collection of poetry, preceded by "Portal" that also includes some of his graphic art, "How to Cut an Orange" and "Adventure Land." This book is a continuation and a stylistic extension of there works. He has also authored a non-fiction book of spiritual philosophy, "Lao-Tzu's Shoe." Bob Grawi is a Renaissance man, but unfortunately the Renaissance ended several centuries ago. Still, he is a present-day artist, inventor, poet, luthier, and musician. One of his musical instrument creations, a variable pitch Gravikord, has the honor of being permanently on display in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His poetry has been published in the magazine "Chronogram."

Book Poetry Of Discovery

Download or read book Poetry Of Discovery written by Andrew Debicki and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading critic of contemporary Spanish poetry examines here the work of ten important poets who came to maturity in the immediate post-Civil War period and whose major works appeared between 1956 and 1971: Francisco Brines; Eladio Cabañero; Angel Crespo; Gloria Fuertes; Jaime Gil de Biedma; Angel González; Manuel Mantero; Claudio Rodríguez; Carlos Sahagún; and José Angel Valente. Although each of these poets has developed an individual style, their work has certain common characteristics: use of the everyday language and images of contemporary Spain, development of language codes and intertextual references, and, most strikingly, metaphoric transformations and surprising reversals of the reader's expectations. Through such means these poets clearly invite their readers to join them in journeys of poetic discovery. Andrew P. Debicki's is the first detailed stylistic analysis of this generation of poets, and the first to approach their work through the particularly appropriate methods developed in "reader-response" criticism.

Book The Publishing and Marketing of Illustrated Literature in Scotland 1760 1825

Download or read book The Publishing and Marketing of Illustrated Literature in Scotland 1760 1825 written by Sandro Jung and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking contribution to the economic and cultural history of the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century publishing of illustrated belles lettres in Scotland, the book offers detailed accounts of numerous agents of prints (booksellers, printers, designers, engravers) and their involvement in the making and marketing of illustrated editions. It examines the ways in which the makers of books not only produced printed visual culture artefacts but also contributed to the ideological inscription of these illustrations to engender patriotic concerns and issues of national identity. The book differs fundamentally from existing interventions in book illustration studies: Examinations of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British literary book illustrations have, as a rule, been selective rather than broad in scope or systematic in outlook; they have focused on English examples of book illustrations. By contrast, The Publishing and Marketing of Illustrated Literature in Scotland, 1760-1820 studies a large body of illustrated editions andadopts a systematic and decentered (non-London-centered) approach. It focuses on the examination of the production of literary book illustrations in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Scotland, while at the same time bearing in mind that developments in the marketing of illustrated books need to be understood as part of the cultural and book-historical dynamics of exchange that existed between Scotland and England. Not only does the monograph offer the first large-scale study of the subject, contextualizing literary book illustrations in terms of the ideologically defined ventures as part of which they were issued, but it also draws a map of illustrated works that has not been imagined yet by scholars of the history of the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century book. In doing so, the book provides an account of the publishing of belles lettres and the various strategies that bookseller-publishers deployed to market their editions competitively in both Scotland and England.
