Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Victor Hugo The conviction that Victor Hugo's permanent fame is to rest largely upon his poetry, the evident fact that it is just this part of his work that is least adequately represented in the reading of American students, and indeed of the American public generally, and the belief that for many the formidable array of volumes in which his poetry is con tained is a chief obstacle to a better acquaintance with the poet - these are the considerations that have led to the preparation of this volume. Its purpose will have been attained if it contribute somewhat to the wider knowledge and the juster appreciation in this country of Victor Hugo as poet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations From the Poems of Victor Hugo It has been said that in these days we know toomuch about our great men. The "fierce light" that beats around the lives of men of genius exaggerates and often distorts every unimportant detail, every subsidiary feature, so that we are shown shreds and patches rather than any comprehensive or comprehensible unit, and a jargon of discussion rises in place of a calm judgment It is as thoughsome great old picture were exposed to a glare so intense that only its cracks and scores would attract notice, while the design as a whole was lost. Book Selected Poems by Victor Hugo

Download or read book Selected Poems by Victor Hugo written by Victor Hugo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Poems by Victor Hugo: Edited With Introduction and Notes The chief difficulty in the preparation of this book has been the choice of the poems to be included. The material is so abundant that, if one were to include merely such pieces as in France would be thought indispensable to a knowledge of Hugo, it would necessitate a collection at least three timw as long as the following. This I say in order that the lover of Hugo may not be surprised if he miss here some poems which he expected to find. In grouping the material, I have adopted a systematic rather than a chronological arrangement. The chronologi cal order usually followed is undesirable. N 0 one would attempt to explain a picture by tracing the order of the strokes of the painter's brush; it only breeds confusion in the mind of the student. Moreover, it is now certain that many of the dates which Hugo placed at the end of his poems are not exact though we do not always know what the true dates are. I have, therefore, suppressed them, since scholarly discussions would here be out of place. In two or three places only, when they were essential to the understanding of the poem, I have retained them. Book Selected Poems of Victor Hugo

Download or read book Selected Poems of Victor Hugo written by Victor Hugo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although best known as the author of Notre Dame de Paris and Les Misérables, Victor Hugo was primarily a poet—one of the most important and prolific in French history. Despite his renown, however, there are few comprehensive collections of his verse available and even fewer translated editions. Translators E. H. and A. M. Blackmore have collected Victor Hugo's essential verse into a single, bilingual volume that showcases all the facets of Hugo's oeuvre, including intimate love poems, satires against the political establishment, serene meditations, religious verse, and narrative poems illustrating his mastery of the art of storytelling and his abiding concern for the social issues of his time. More than half of this volume's eight thousand lines of verse appear here for the first time in English, providing readers with a new perspective on each of the fascinating periods of Hugo's career and aspects of his style. Introductions to each section guide the reader through the stages of Hugo's writing, while notes on individual poems provide information not found in even the most detailed French-language editions. Illustrated with Hugo's own paintings and drawings, this lucid translation—available on the eve of Hugo's bicentenary—pays homage to this towering figure of nineteenth-century literature by capturing the energy of his poetry, the drama and satirical force of his language, and the visionary beauty of his writing as a whole.

Book The Essential Victor Hugo

Download or read book The Essential Victor Hugo written by Victor Hugo and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'To the English, I am "shocking"...What's more, French, which is disgusting; republican, which is abominable; exiled, which is repulsive; defeated, which is infamous. To top it all off, a poet...' Victor Hugo dominated literary life in France for over half a century, pouring forth novels, poems, plays, and other writings with unflagging zest and vitality. Here, for the first time in English, all aspects of his work are represented within a single volume. Famous scenes from the novels Notre-Dame, Les Misérables, and The Toilers of the Sea are included, as well as excerpts from his intimate diaries, poems of love and loss, and scathing denunciations of the political establishment. All the chosen passages are self-contained and can be enjoyed without any previous knowledge of Hugo's work. Much of the material is appearing in English for the first time, and most of it has never before been annotated thoroughly in any language.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Victor Hugo, to His Family, to Sainte-Beuve and Others My dear Mamma, - We are very dull here since you left. We often go to see M. Foucher, as you told us to do. He proposed to us to join in the lessons his sons are taking; we thanked him and declined. Every morning we work at Latin and mathematics. A letter with a black seal, and addressed to Abel, came the evening you went away. M. Foucher will send it on to you. He was kind enough to take us to the museum... Come home soon. We don't know what to say or do without you; we are quite lost. We are always thinking of you. Mamma, mamma! Victor. II. To Monsieur le General Hugo, at his country-place of Saint Lazare, near Blois. Book excerpt: This generous, varied selection of poems by one of France's best-loved and most reviled poets is presented with facing originals, detailed notes, and a lively introduction to the author's life and work. Steven Monte presents more than eighty poems in translation and in the original French, taken from the earliest poetic publications of the 1820's, through collections published during exile, to works published in the years following Hugo's death in 1883. The introduction provides helpful background information about Hugo's life and work, the selection, and what is involved in translating a poet whose effortless rhymes are central to the poetry's power. Detailed notes at the back of the volume offer information about the poems and their publishing and historical contexts. This is an ideal introduction to a poet whose work, for all its renown, remains for Anglophone readers undiscovered.
