Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Sentiment and Humor In true humbleness I wish to offer thanks for the recognition which my youthful works have received from the many readers who have taken time to peruse my early efforts at versification. Heeding the dictates of my heart I have endeavored to portray the humorous and sentimental emotions which my nature endowed. Taking my share of the poet's license, I refrain from further expression by quoting the opinion of my brother, O. Gordon Due, which appeared in the preface of my pamphlet issued in the years 1901 and 1902. "Among the many poems which have emanated from my brother, Joseph J. C. Due's pen, I think 'A Woman's Craving' is his best effort, although he may write one which will excel it. People of humorous nature like 'When Jones Was On the Hog, ' 'Before and After Marriage - With Exceptions, ' and 'There Is Always a Sucker to Bite.' I like 'A Woman's Craving' because it is a sentimental poem. These poems have appeared in able journals. 'A Woman's Craving' appeared in the July number of Brann's Iconoclast in the year 1901, on the same page with the poem that Richard E.Stephenson dedicated to the Presidential Tour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After-Dinner Poetry and Sentiment: A Collection of Short English Verse Appropriate for After-Dinner Reading and Speaking; And Agreeable, Always This collection of short English poems represents a part of the random reading of an over-worked lawyer, who, for several years, has had little time for more ambitious reading. Many evenings, after dinner, have these light-hearted, whole-souled bards added a glow of warmth to a disposition chilled by the secular work of the day; and their beautiful words, tender sentiments, patriotic impulses, humor, passion, pathos and hilarity, have helped to drive away dull. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems From the Press: Patriotic, Descriptive, Sentimental and Humorous Although a thought or a sentiment might very often be better expressed in prose than verse, still it is not so likely to catch and rivet the attention of a casual reader, and many quotations now Familiar in our mouth as household words, would probably never have attained their present popularity had they been embodied in a speech or newspaper paragraph. As many of the poems in this volume have been read and met the approval of various people in high positions, well qualified to judge, I think no apology is needed for offering them to the general public, although the material may not have the culture or polish of the high-class magazine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Smile, Love and a Tear: A Little Book of Verses, Tragedy, Sentiment and Humorous Dialect The sayings of Monte Patton are not counter feited, or manufactured out of somebody's head but they have been written, as they were spoken by an illiterate mountaineer. Ten years from now, I would say, all of the Tennessee mountaineers will be under the sod. Their quaint and homely sayings should be preserved for posterity. In order that the best Of that picturesque life and language may be preserved, I have written down the sayings Of Monte Patton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Humour: Poems From "Punch" A melancholy interest attaches itself to the last two pieces in this volume. Book Humorous Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Humorous Poems Classic Reprint written by William Michael Rossetti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Humorous Poems Humour Is, In an intense degree, at once individual and expansive. It depends upon a specialty of character; it affects all persons with whom it comes in contact; and it produces in the humourist's own mind a recast of all his experiences - they become to him very different from what they are 7567' se, or what they would seem were he not a humourist. If he is furthermore a humourist with a gift of expression or of writing, he naturally produces something that has a avour of its own-something fairly proper to himself, and (in the higher classes of humouristic writing) genuinely original. While humour is thus, as I have termed it, expansive, Wit is intensive or incisive. Humour mo difies its subject-matter - and cannot help doing so, because the humourist is compelled to see everything through the spectacles of his own strong individuality: Wit irradiates or illustrates its subject-matter, but leaves it substantially unmodified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Songs: Humorous, Serious, and Satirical Four years ago, on the occasion of the mid-centenary of his fame - and urged to the work besides by an ia borne conviction that the numerous admirers of his lyrical genius, at home and abroad, would welcome the publication - I prepared awl issued a comprehensive selection of the widely popular Poems and Songs of alexander rodger, the Glasgow Radical Post. All that he wrote and left behind him in printed form was not gathered into the pages of that work but nothing was left out which the editor and publisher could per suade themselves might be desired by the public, or the omission of which was likely to injure the reputa tion of the author. The long and unequal narrative poem of Peter Cornclips was omitted. Some of the Poet's satires were not included - such as are absent from this larger edition also - because, referring as they do to persons and events of more than fifty years ago, their point is either no longer apparent, or their motive has ceased to be interesting. But the worthy, the witty, and the wise - they were all there, to the honour and renown of their creator.
