Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Sentiment and Humor In true humbleness I wish to offer thanks for the recognition which my youthful works have received from the many readers who have taken time to peruse my early efforts at versification. Heeding the dictates of my heart I have endeavored to portray the humorous and sentimental emotions which my nature endowed. Taking my share of the poet's license, I refrain from further expression by quoting the opinion of my brother, O. Gordon Due, which appeared in the preface of my pamphlet issued in the years 1901 and 1902. "Among the many poems which have emanated from my brother, Joseph J. C. Due's pen, I think 'A Woman's Craving' is his best effort, although he may write one which will excel it. People of humorous nature like 'When Jones Was On the Hog, ' 'Before and After Marriage - With Exceptions, ' and 'There Is Always a Sucker to Bite.' I like 'A Woman's Craving' because it is a sentimental poem. These poems have appeared in able journals. 'A Woman's Craving' appeared in the July number of Brann's Iconoclast in the year 1901, on the same page with the poem that Richard E.Stephenson dedicated to the Presidential Tour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This volume is a broad mixture of subjects, in lyrical, thoughtful and humorous moods. From a feeling, [ not from the news ] like a surf wave, powerful or gentle, I flow through the work If it’s a strong feeling, writing is fast. Most times it’s slow, laborious editing. I sometimes make notes. I don’t appreciate modern poetry. This is my own work. I copy no one. I love writing! Several poems are short stories. They contain a variety of windows into the imagination and fantasy. The thoughtful ones may arouse talking points.”

Book Humor in Modern American Poetry

Download or read book Humor in Modern American Poetry written by Rachel Trousdale and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern poetry, at least according to the current consensus, is difficult and often depressing. But as Humor in Modern American Poetry shows, modern poetry is full of humorous moments, from comic verse published in popular magazines to the absurd juxtapositions of The Cantos. The essays in this collection show that humor is as essential to the serious work of William Carlos Williams as it is to the light verse of Phyllis McGinley. For the writers in this volume, the point of humor is not to provide “comic relief,” a brief counterpoint to the poem's more serious themes; humor is central to the poems' projects. These poets use humor to claim their own poetic authority; to re-define literary tradition; to show what audience they are writing for; to make political attacks; and, perhaps most surprisingly, to promote sympathy among their readers. The essays in this book include single-author studies, discussions of literary circles, and theories of form. Taken together, they help to begin a new conversation about modernist poetry, one that treats its lighthearted moments not as decorative but as substantive. Humor defines groups and marks social boundaries, but it also leads us to transgress those boundaries; it forges ties between the writer and the reader, blurs the line between public and private, and becomes a spur to self-awareness.

Book After Dinner Poetry and Sentiment

Download or read book After Dinner Poetry and Sentiment written by Avery Webb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After-Dinner Poetry and Sentiment: A Collection of Short English Verse Appropriate for After-Dinner Reading and Speaking; And Agreeable, Always This collection of short English poems represents a part of the random reading of an over-worked lawyer, who, for several years, has had little time for more ambitious reading. Many evenings, after dinner, have these light-hearted, whole-souled bards added a glow of warmth to a disposition chilled by the secular work of the day; and their beautiful words, tender sentiments, patriotic impulses, humor, passion, pathos and hilarity, have helped to drive away dull. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems From the Press: Patriotic, Descriptive, Sentimental and Humorous Although a thought or a sentiment might very often be better expressed in prose than verse, still it is not so likely to catch and rivet the attention of a casual reader, and many quotations now Familiar in our mouth as household words, would probably never have attained their present popularity had they been embodied in a speech or newspaper paragraph. As many of the poems in this volume have been read and met the approval of various people in high positions, well qualified to judge, I think no apology is needed for offering them to the general public, although the material may not have the culture or polish of the high-class magazine. Book Humorous Poems for Children

Download or read book Humorous Poems for Children written by Daya Callan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems are written in a slapstick comedy style. Our thoughts and feelings are the film we project out into the world and they appear as the circumstances we encounter in life. If children could learn to see the humor in the situations they encounter, they will begin to drop the judgments against themselves and towards what they have created. They will also be far less inclined to judge others. This ability to see life in a more lighthearted way provides an extraordinary inner freedom that lifts the spirit to higher and higher levels.
