Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iraqi poet Nazik al-Malaika was one of the most important Arab poets of the twentieth century. Over the course of a four-decade career, her contributions to both the theory and the practice of free verse (or tafʿilah) poetry confirmed her position as a pioneer of Arab modernism. Revolt Against the Sun presents a selection of Nazik al-Malaika's poetry in English for the first time. Bringing together poems from each of her published collections, it traces al-Mala'ika's transformation from a lyrical Romantic poet in the 1940s to a fervently committed Arab nationalist in the 1970s and 1980s. The translations offer both an overview of her life and work, and an insight into the political and social realities in the Arab world in the decades following the Second World War. Featuring a comprehensive historical and critical introduction, this bilingual reader reveals how one woman transformed the landscape of modern Arabic literature and culture in the twentieth century. It is a key resource for students and teachers of Arabic and world literature, as well as for readers interested in discovering an alternative narrative of modern Iraqi culture.

Book Resistance Rebellion Life

Download or read book Resistance Rebellion Life written by Amit Majmudar and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poets on the march: 50 crucial poems written in response to the current political climate, selected and introduced by the Ohio Poet Laureate—and son of immigrants—Amit Majmudar. In a political atmosphere where language and even meaning itself are continually under threat, poetry has a critical role to play. And our poets have been responding—in the streets and at their desks, demanding a full accounting from themselves and from their nation. Majmudar's elegant introduction to these vital poems reminds us that "false stories take a lot of killing because they are made of language. Because they are made of language, though, they can be killed." From Solmaz Sharif and Eileen Myles to Kevin Young and Juan Felipe Herrera, American poets of diverse styles and strategies have contributed their truths: scenes from the front lines of resistance, and from the interior of our collective conscience. A final cento by Majmudar—a poem including at least one line or phrase from each of the poems in the volume—celebrates the robust multiplicity of voices in this book and in America now.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Revolt and Satan Unbound Poems Of Revolt Invocation 0 Thou Mother, and mistress, and muse, Through the desperate days of the year, When the ghosts of dead hours haunt the hearth, With compassion and comfort be near. In the whip of a merciless wind, How the world with its weariness writhes, While the barren tree silently points To the fugitive moon in the skies. All my heart is an ember consumed, And my youth is a garment outworn, For the roses of love that is fled, In the present have put forth a thorn. In the pitfalls and snares of the past I have fallen, and sinned against thee, I have bowed to the yoke of the world, I thy poet, thy chosen, born free. Download or read book The Revolt of Islam written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolt of Islam (1818) is a poem in twelve cantos composed by Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1817. The poem was originally published under the title Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century by Charles and James Ollier in December 1817. Shelley composed the work in the vicinity of Bisham Wood, near Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire, northwest of London, from April to September. The plot centres on two characters named Laon and Cythna who initiate a revolution against the despotic ruler of the fictional state of Argolis, modelled on the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Despite its title, the poem has nothing to do with Islam in particular, though the general subject of religion is addressed. The work is a symbolic parable on liberation and revolutionary idealism following the disillusionment of the French Revolution.
