Book The Ballad Poetry of Ireland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ballad Poetry of Ireland Classic Reprint written by Charles Gavan Duffy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ballad Poetry of Ireland Three editions of this collection having been exhausted in less than a month, the publisher has called upon me to prepare a fourth; and with this object I have gone over it carefully, and expunged as many as I could detect of the original sins incident to early editions - errors of the press, of haste, and of carelessness. Something of this kind was done for the Third Edition but there was not leisure to do it carefully. It will now, I trust, be found tolerably free from errors of the class chargeable on an editor. The success of these ballads seems to me to give happy promise of a vigorous and national literature in Ireland. Ballads have been among the first home-grown productions of all countries and their popularity here now is no slight evidence that the national mind is still fresh and earnest, and has the impulses and propensities that belong to a young nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Odes and Other Poems Brethren. The Liberal Arts are the children of a virtuous, unboastful Liberty, frank-hearted, and not self-respecting alone, but full of respect for all that is human. Their larger growths are quickened from the soil of sympathies wide as the earth, and are freshened b'y aspirations not restrained to the earth. Like the spontaneous growths of Nature, they are also in part, it is true, Traditions; but the allegation that America must wait long for a past, is an error. She has only to remember, as well as look forward, and the Past of all those nations from which her race is derived is her Past also. Book The Book of Irish Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Irish Poetry Classic Reprint written by Alfred Perceval Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Irish Poetry Thomas Moore was more individual as a poet than any of the Young Ireland group yet, whilst he undoubtedly possessed the Irish characteristics of wit and fancy, sentiment and satire, he had nothing of the spirit of the Irish countryside in his composition. Irish was not spoken by his parents or neighbours in Dublin, and when years afterwards he was seeking materials for his History of Ireland in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, he was amazed to find what a great body of Gaelic literature in prose and verse, utterly new to him, lay collected there before his eyes. The classics inspired the anacreontics of Thomas Little his poetical tales, coloured though they were by his Celtic imagination as well as by his West Indian recollections, were entirely derived from Eastern, never from Irish sources. The only purely Irish influence upon his work was that of Irish music, and that influence has made his Irish melodies, in part at any rate, imperish able. They possess a reality for the writer of which little, alas! Can be conveyed to his readers; For him the cold words carry life and youth in their veins; they recall real scenes and feelings. He sees the steep little Town, With its long Bridge, the country-side and its thatched Cottages (each with a human history) among rocky knolls and moors. The sun is fresh upon the morn ing Sea, or sends a parting smile across the green hilled Harbour; the fishermen haul their nets; they lie asleep on the grass; the sailors 'yo-heave-o' sounds up, 'the Clank of the chain-cable, the cease less hum Of the waterfall. He meets the pilot's daughter and her fair comrades, Sits musing on the green mound Of a Bath (one among many in the landscape) or some carved stone under the Abbey ruins; rows his boat slantingly across the rapid; plunges into brimming rock-pool or noisy waves. The Atlantic stretches limitless, the seafowl rise from the strand and y across black cliffs capt with thymy sward, the rabbits skip in the mossy dells of the warren. Wavy outline of a Mountain-range runs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Ballads of Young Ireland Because you suffered for the cause; Because you strove with voice and pen To serve the Law above the laws That purifies the hearts of men; Because you failed, and grew not slack, Not sullen, not disconsolate; Nor stooped to seek a lower track, But showed your soul a match for Fate; Because you hated all things base, And held your country's honour high; Because you wrought in Time and Space Not heedless of Eternity; Because you loved the nobler part Of Erin; so we bring you here Words such as once the nation's heart On patriot lips rejoiced to hear: Strains that have little chance to live With those that Davis' clarion blew.
