I have thrown it: Was it mine? I care not if it was, for I disown it; Go, let it steep in brine! Perchance it yet may twine Around the brow of some sad poet perished Full twenty fathoms down. Or by a nymph be taken up and cherished, And woven for her crown. O glory! O renown! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Abelard and Heloise are familiar names. It is their "star quality," argues Constant Mews, that has prevented them from being seen clearly in the context of 12th-century thought - that task he has set himself in this book. He contends that the dramatic intensity of these famous lives needs to be examined in the broader context of their shared commitment to the study of philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the twelfth century the story of Héloïse and Abelard has held the imagination, each age viewing afresh the love that has immortalized them both. In this illuminating and beautifully detailed study which is in the nature of an interpretation rather than a narrative. The author seems to have come as near as one may to understanding the Héloïse who belongs both to her own century and to all time. Drawing on the correspondence exchanged between Héloïse and Abelard, as well as on other contemporary letters and documents, and having visited in France the places associated with the life of Héloïse, she gives a moving picture of this remarkable woman who, having as a young girl taken the veil at the order of Abelard her husband, continued in the face of seemingly insuperable obstacles to prove by her intelligence, courage and selfless devotion, the reality of her love for him, while at the same time winning wide esteem as the exemplary and much revered abbess of a Benedictine nunnery founded and made over to her by Abelard.

But, the spark of it remained smoldering inside the lovers until their death and beyond. Heloise and her tutor, Peter Abelard, share a devotion passionate in its depth and beautiful in its thoughtfulness. They marry, and Heloise bears a son whom she names Astrolabe. However, all of this must be done in secret, for Abelard is forbidden to wed by the church which considers him a cleric. When the truth of their relationship is exposed, they are separated and punished both in body and soul. Marion Meade weaves history and fiction together in STEALING HEAVEN, an epic story of one of history s most tragic love affairs. With facts pulled from Heloise s actual love letters, Meade creates a poetic and sensual tapestry of France in the 12th century."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Atmospherically light and stylistically expansive--poems that regard our givens as a gift. At the centre of THE LOST LETTERS is a sequence of radically diverse poems based on the story of Heloise and Abelard, truly lovers in a dangerous time, the twelfth century. The raw material is heavy, tension between flesh and spirit being the serious issue carried forward from the twelfth century into the twenty-first. But Greenwood's deft and delicate handling of scenarios of love requited but balked becomes a perceptive reading--extraordinarily inventive and constantly surprising--of contemporary secular society.

Book Through Human Love to God

Download or read book Through Human Love to God written by Pamela Williams and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante and Petrarch are two of the world's greatest love poets who convey the story of their emotional, intellectual, and religious life in part through a story of human love. The focus here is not so much on the myriad symbolic values and associations of Beatrice and Laura but rather both on the attitudes of these two poets to sexual desire in order to throw some light on the character of their human love and on the status and value they give to human love in the context of their Christian lives. For all the stark contrasts between them, Dante and Petrarch have been often compared, for they write in a common literary, classical, and Christian tradition. The comparison generally leads to the conclusion that Dante describes his human love experience as positive and constructive whilst Petrarch's experience of love is negative and destructive. My intention here is not to polarize their views in this way, but rather to identify the different yet positive and highly original value both poets attribute to human love. More than fifty years ago, Etienne Gilson claimed that Peter Abelard turned to loving God in the way that Heloise had loved him, with the disinterestedness which she claimed in loving him and which she accused him of never understanding in loving her. It is the general argument of this study that Dante and Petrarch, as well as leaving their original mark on the treatment of love in literature, have insights into religion, personal to them, which can be likewise characterized by examining their attitude to human love and the story of their personal loves. There are many more aspects to their Catholicism than are examined in these essays. The discussion here is of that part of their faith which grows out of, is coloured by, or at least can be explored, through their human loving.
