The soft strings of a Spanish lute one day You struck, and plaintive notes gushed forth like tears. Ravished I listened, and I longed to play The music to another people's ears. You showed me all the cunning workmanship, The stretching of the strings, the exquisite Adjustment of the frets, the body's dip; I took the lute and tried to copy it. Well, here it is, re-fashioned and re-strung. Play on it; ah, I fear those sweet, sad airs Sound cracked and harsh now, better left unsung. Well, fling the lute aside and take Becquer's! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer San Telmo, where he remained but a short time. His godmother then determined to make a merchant of him, and directed his studies accordingly; but reading books was much more to his taste than keeping books, and he turned his uninteresting ledgers into sketch-books with much skill and humour. Encouraged by the success of his early verses, he determined to enter the arena of literature, and fight there for fame and fortune with an independence and strength of will astonishing in one so frail in health, so sweet and amiable in temperament. So, in 1854, against the wishes of his guardian, and sacrificing the prospects of the fortune she intended to leave him, he boldly set out for Madrid, with many hopes and little else. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer is considered one of the first modern Spanish poets. His ‘Rimas’ (Rhymes) are celebrated for their sensitive, restrained and deeply subjective quality. Bécquer’s poetry tackles themes of love, disillusionment and loneliness, while exploring the mysteries of life and poetry. In contrast to the rhetorical and dramatic style of the Romantic period, Bécquer’s lyricism, in which assonance predominates, is simple and airy. Download or read book Nine Gates written by Jane Hirshfield and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1998-08-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gate Enables passage between what is inside and what is outside, and the connection poetry forges between inner and outer lives is the fundamental theme of these nine essays. Nine Gates begins with a close examination of the roots of poetic craft in "the mind of concentration" and concludes by exploring the writer's role in creating a sense of community that is open, inclusive and able to bind the individual and the whole in a way that allows each full self-expression. in between, Nine Gates illumines the nature of originality, translation, the various strategies by which meaning unfolds itself in language, poetry's roots in oral memory and the importance of the shadow to good art. A person who enters completely into the experience of a poem is initiated into a deeper intimacy with life. Delving into the nature of poetry, Jane Hirshfield also writes on the nature of the human mind, perception and experience. Nine Gates is about the underpinnings of poetic craft, but it is also about a way of being alive in the world -- alertly, musically, intelligently, passionately, permeably. In part a primer for the general reader, Nine Gates is also a manual for the working writer, with each "gate" exploring particular strategies of language and thought that allow a poem to convey meaning and emotion with clarity and force. Above all, Nine Gates is an insightful guide to the way the mind of poetry awakens our fundamental consciousness of what can be known when a person is most fully alive.

Download or read book Collected Poems Rimas written by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and published by Shearsman Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustavo Adolfo Becquer was one of Spain's most important poets of the 19th century, and the instigator of a new Spanish version of Romanticism, influenced by German models such as Heine. Born in Seville in 1836, the son of an artist of Flemish origin, he lived only 34 years, but in that time created a hugely influential body of verse (his Rimas, or Rhymes) as well as several short fictions (the Leyendas, or Legends). His other works include a remarkable series of letters, or epistolary fictions, published as Desde mi celda (From My Cell). Orphaned at the age of five, Becquer was raised by an elderly, and childless, uncle. A talented artist himself - as was also his brother, Valeriano - he became a pupil at a local studio in Seville, but gave this up in favour of a literary career, heading for Madrid at the age of eighteen, full of hope. He obtained a minor post in the civil-service, thanks to his uncle's influence, but was not cut out for such a routine job and was dismissed. For some time thereafter he was a typical Bohemian artist, living on very little while trying to write, and scratching a small income from the translation of foreign novels, and from part-time journalism. Towards the end of his life he obtained another government post, as a censor, but when he died, it was in considerable poverty, suffering from pneumonia and liver problems. His work was only published posthumously, thanks to the efforts of his friends.

Book Legends Tales and Poems by Gustavo Adolfo Becquer

Download or read book Legends Tales and Poems by Gustavo Adolfo Becquer written by Gustavo Becquer and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparing this collection of Becquer's legends, tales, and short poems, which is the only annotated edition of this author's works that has been published as yet for English-speaking students, the editor has aimed to give to our schools and colleges a book that may serve, not only as a reader for first or second year classes, but also as an introduction to Spanish literature, through the works of one of the most original and charming authors of the Spanish Romantic school.Fondness for good literature should be stimulated from the very first, and the quaint tales and legends of old Spain contained in this edition, told, as they are, in a most fascinating style, are well adapted to captivate the student's interest and to lead him to investigate further the rich mine of Spanish literature. Becquer's poetry is no less pleasing than his prose, and not much more difficult to read. With the aid of the ample treatise on Spanish versification contained in the introduction, the student will be enabled to appreciate the harmony and rhythm of Becquer's verse, and in all subsequent reading of Spanish poetry he will find this treatise a convenient and valuable work of reference. The Life of Becquer, though concise, is perhaps the most complete that has yet been published, for it embodies all the data given by previous biographers and a certain number of facts gathered by the writer at the time of his last visit to Spain (in 1905-1906), from friends of Becquer who were then living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of my poetry has been and is the development of an encounter with an idea about God, the great Spanish poet and Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez wrote several years before his death. An early twentieth-century pioneer in the use of free verse, Jiménez has always expressed himself through mystery and profundity. The author presents a fervent landscape of primordial imagery in an attempt to restore mystical poetry to its rightful place in literature and art. For anyone not familiar with the writings of this modern master, these austere and radiant poems, translated by the poet and scholar Antonio de Nicolás and presented alongside the original Spanish, will demonstrate why Jiménez is considered one of the masters of twentieth-century poetry. To what may this writing be compared? Whitman's 'Song of Myself' comes to mind, but it is not with any intention of taking away from Whitman's achievement that I declare a preference for the poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez ...
