He grew up on a farm and was educated in a country school, Wauseon High and Elkhart, Indiana. He began teaching at 18. In the spring of 1877 was admitted to practice law at Goshen, Indiana. He was married on Octo her first, 1880, to Ella Frances Grumman, at Berlin ville, Erie County, Ohio. He has a family of three sons and two daughters. He is now engaged in the law and real estate, together with his son, Kenneth, at Lorain, Ohio, where all communications will reach him; and now, I take up the beginning of the end. In 1876, I was to publish a volume of poems; all I lacked was the means, and I have been fighting in the industrial world ever since. Have I won? Well, yes! And now I am going to the press. After taking up and dropping a name at each decade, I will call it Poems of F rienship, Love and Hope for what else of this earth interests me? Let me be a monarch of Love and thou mayest rule all else. My object is to build up and better Humanity. I go before the Public of my own free will and accord, whether for praise or condemnation, you will find me still writing. I come at eventide but salute you by saying, Good morning, here I am. N ow I really hope you will be pleased for Where do I get my cost if I fail to get praise? All else I was forced to get before I went to press. From my earliest mem ory, I liked things sweet and would I be an Author if I did not like praise? I always wanted my butter spread thickly and Whether condemnation or praise, do not be afraid to spread it on and I will greet bothwith a smile. Mr. Critic, wade in, I love a fracas; if you will fight, we will postpone dinner and put on the gloves; but for all who praise, God be with you. Book excerpt: In Consolations David Whyte unpacks aspects of being human that many of us spend our lives trying vainly to avoid - loss, heartbreak, vulnerability, fear - boldly reinterpreting them, fully embracing their complexity, never shying away from paradox in his relentless search for meaning. Beginning with 'Alone' and closing with 'Withdrawal', each piece in this life-affirming book is a meditation on meaning and context, an invitation to shift and broaden our perspectives on life: pain and joy, honesty and anger, confession and vulnerability, the experience of feeling overwhelmed and the desire to run away from it all. Through this lens, procrastination may be a necessary ripening; hiding an act of freedom; and shyness something that accompanies the first stage of revelation. Consolations invites readers into a poetic and thoughtful consideration of words whose meaning and interpretation influence the paths we choose and the way we traverse them throughout our lives.

Since 1988, The Best American Poetry has been the leading anthology of contemporary American poetry. The Washington Post said of the 2017 edition, “The poems...have a wonderful cohesion and flow, as if each contributes to a larger narrative about life today…While readers may question some of the selections—an annual sport with this series—most will find much that resonates, including the insightful author notes at the back of the anthology.” The state of the world has inspired many to write poetry, and to read it—to share all the rage, beauty, and every other thing under the sun in the way that only poetry can. Now the foremost anthology of contemporary American poetry returns, guest edited by Major Jackson, the poet and editor who, “makes poems that rumble and rock” (poet Dorianne Laux). This brilliant 2019 edition includes some of the year’s most defining, striking, and innovative poems and poets.

  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Reflections written by Lisa Camper and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began more than 35 years ago at the request of an amazing teacher. She saw more than the emotional teenager in her class and suggested that I begin keeping a journal where I could feel safe expressing my deepest hurts and my most joyous moments. Over the years, that journal has transformed into a collection of poems that conveys emotions nearly everyone has experienced. As you turn the heartfelt pages of my emotions, you will see that my life has not been all that different than yours. I have experienced the joy of finding true love and have been blessed with some of the best friends a person could have. I have also felt the profound loss of loved ones and struggled to overcome the darkness that inevitably follows. It is my sincere hope that these poems, even the simple poems of a young teenager, will offer you some comfort in knowing that each of us has difficult times where love seems an abstract, distant prospect. It was during my darkest times that I learned the most about the person I was becoming. May a smile grace your face when you read of the bountiful love and friendship I have encountered. And, may your heart feel a bit lighter knowing that all of us share the common experiences of friendship, love, and loss.

Book Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Carlos Williams
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780252027482
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book Poems written by William Carlos Williams and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before William Carlos Williams was recognized as one of the most important innovators in American poetry, he commissioned a printer to publish 100 copies of Poems (1909), a small collection largely imitating the styles of the Romantics and the Victorians. This volume collects the self-published edition of Poems, Williams's foray into the world of letters, with previously unpublished notes he made after spending nearly a year in Europe rethinking poetry and how to write it. As Poems shows his first tentative steps into poetry, the notes show him as he prepares to make a giant transformation in his art. Shortly after Poems appeared, Williams went through a series of experiences that changed his life--a trip to Europe, a marriage to the sister of the woman he genuinely loved, and the establishment of his medical practice. In Europe he was introduced to a consideration of an unlikely trio: Heinrich Heine, Martin Luther, and Richard Wagner, resulting in an exposure that subsequently influenced his developing style. Williams looked back on Poems as apprentice work, calling them, "bad Keats, nothing else--oh well, bad Whitman too. But I sure loved them. . . . There is not one thing of the slightest value in the whole thin booklet--except the intent," and never republished the collection. Now that Williams's work is widely read and appreciated, his reputation secure, his development as a poet is a matter worth serious study, Poems can be seen as a point of departure, a clear record of where Williams began before his life and ideas about poetry made seismic shifts. Virginia M. Wright-Peterson's succinct introduction puts Poems in the context of his life and times, discusses the reception of the volume, his reconsideration of the poems, and what they reveal about his poetic ambitions.
