This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Friendship, Life, Home, Love, Religion, Humor and Other Poems NO one would presume to say that we are to assign definite hours in which to compose poetry or construct oratory, since these lines of human effort cannot be governed by definite rules. On the other hand, poetry is dependent upon inspiration. Having the faculty to produce, advantage must be taken of inspirations as they impress the mind. The larger part of my writings in rhyme was produced while on trips of travel or when at home in my library. In the former I was impressed by the grandeur of nature as seen personally, and in the latter by the quiet and rest which I find in the work room oi my home. To the class of productions which I wrote while on trips belong The Falls of the Niagara, We Ought to S tore a Treasure and Nightfall. To the class written at home under the inspiration of art and life, instead more specially of nature, belong the larger number of poems in this book. Of these The Power of Love, The Linden Tree and The Wandering Jew may be mentioned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'Many poets make us smile; how many poets make us laugh - or, in that curious phrase, "laugh out loud" (as if there's another way of doing it)? Who else uses an essentially conversational idiom to achieve such a variety of emotional effects? Who else takes us, and takes us so often, from sunlit levity to mellifluous gloom?... Larkin, often, is more than memorable: he is instantly unforgettable.' - Martin Amis

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temple of Friendship and Other Poems Tms little volume has been put together from the attempts of a very few years. A great part of it has been composed within the last twelve months, and much has been cut out which it has been impossible to revise or complete. Without attempting excuse for the faults that must be found, the author presents these poems with a cherished hope that there will be those, however few, who will find here something true, something beautiful, something worthy of that high and unceasing purpose for which they were written. Once again, Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating profound and playful renditions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi’s joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis’s loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir’s wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa’s sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz—these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all “love poems by God” from writers considered “conduits of the divine.” Together, they form a spiritual treasure to cherish always.

Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1988, Philip Larkin's Collected Poems has become essential reading on any poetry bookshelf. This new edition returns to Larkin's own deliberate ordering of his poems, presenting, in their original sequence, his four published books: The North Ship, The Less Deceived, The Whitsun Weddings and High Windows. It also includes an appendix of poems that Larkin published in other places, from his juvenilia to his final years - some of which might have appeared in a late book, if he had lived. Preserving everything that he published in his lifetime, this new Collected Poems returns the reader to the book Larkin might have intended.

Book excerpt: The Four Loves is a 1960 book by C. S. Lewis which explores the nature of love from a Christian and philosophical perspective through thought experiments. The book was based on a set of radio talks from 1958 which had been criticized in the U.S. at the time for their frankness about sex. C.S. Lewis examines storge or empathy love; philia, friendship love; eros, romantic love; and agape, or God love. Excerpt: "GOD is love," says St. John. When I first tried to write this book I thought that his maxim would provide me with a very plain highroad through the whole subject. I thought I should be able to say that human loves deserved to be called loves at all just in so far as they resembled that Love which is God."
