Book excerpt: The Therigatha is a celebration, with many different human faces, of women's personal experiences of Nibbana. This thesis, in the field of Theravada Buddhist Studies, examines the Therigatha from a dharmalogical perspective. I investigate the distinguishing characteristics of these early female voices transmitting the Buddha's teachings. I examine the religious, social, and literary context in which the poems were composed, and their textual history and content. I analyze the Pali text for key words indicative of the relative dating of this text compared to others in the Pali canon, and investigate the frequencies of stock phrases in the wider context of the Sutta Pitaka. This analysis also reveals differences between the poems of the nuns compared to those of the monks in the Theragatha. I argue that the poems of the Therigatha can be used effectively by Dharma teachers today to inspire Buddhist practitioners, particulary in regard to the Third Noble Truth, the truth of freedom. This thesis explores a central message of the Therigatha that Nibbana, complet release, is possible in this very lifetime, and that it is just as possible for women as for men. With the variety of the testimonials of ultimate freedom found in these poems, this text can inspire, guide, and liberate practitioners regardless of their sex, culture, situation, background, or even their challenges. In exploring what the Therigatha depicts about how these venerable nuns train, I offer my interpretation, with illustrations from their poems, of a path of practice that can lead to liberation, and I discuss the role of insight and the goal of the training, Nibbana. I investigate: 1) the foundations of practice: ethics, renunciation, meditation, friendship, and having a teacher one can trust; 2) wise effort; 3) the application of effort to: purifying the mind, courage, letting go of afflictive states, stilling desires, contentment, concentration, and open awareness; 4) insight; and 5) letting go. The thesis concludes with reflections on the fundamental message of the Therigatha, its potential to elicit joy, and how it can inspire practitioners today, not least by offering us a taste of Nibbana.

The nuns in this anthology come from a range of backgrounds: some were placed in convents when very young; others were former palace ladies or courtesans who found refuge in the religious life; others were women left widowed or destitute in the wake of the various political and social upheavals of the times, especially the violent transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties in the mid-seventeenth century. This period was also marked by a flourishing of women's culture, as more and more women from the gentry-class began not only to receive the classical education required to write poetry, but also to have their works printed and circulated. Most of the poet-nuns in this volume were from this gentry class, and almost all of them had at least one collection of writings, usually poetry, printed in their names. Although most of these collections are now lost, some of their poems have fortunately been preserved in various anthologies from this period, including anthologies dedicated exclusively to women's poetry, as well as in collections of Buddhist records.

It explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and texts of codes of conduct and how particular models of conduct for mortal women have been created. Hindu religious culture correlates philosophical speculation and social imperatives to situate femininity on a continuum from divine to mortal existence. This creates in the Hindu consciousness multiple - often contradictory - images of women, both as wielders and subjects of authority. The conception and evolution of the major Hindu goddesses, placed against the judgments passed by texts of Hindu sacred law on women’s nature and duties, illuminate the Hindu discourse on gender, the complexity of which is compounded by the distinctive spirituality of female ascetic poets. Drawing on a wide range of Sanskrit texts, the author explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and also from the social roles of women as reflected in, and prescribed by, texts of codes of conduct. She examines the idea of female divinity which gave rise to models of conduct for mortal women. Instead of a one-way order of ideological derivation, the author argues that there is constant traffic between both ways the notional and the actual feminine.
