Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of American Patriotism Who now shall sneer? Who dare again to say we trace Our lines to a plebeian race? Roundhead and Cavalier! Dumb are those names, erewhile in battle loud; Dream-footed, as the shadow of a cloud, They flit across the ear; That is best blood that hath most iron in 't To edge resolve with, pouring without stint For what makes manhood dear. Tell us not of Plantagenets, Hapsburgs, and Guelphs, whose thin bloods crawl Down from some victor in a border brawl! How poor their outworn coronets, Matched with one leaf of that plain civic wreath Our brave for honor's blazon shall bequeath, Through whose desert a rescued Nation sets Her heel on treason, and the trumpet hears Shout victory, tingling Europe's sullen ears With vain resentments and more vain regrets! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of American Patriotism: 1776-1898 Several collections of patriotic verse have been made, but none hitherto, so far as I know, which carries one later than the Civil War. The present compilation makes pretensions neither to completeness, - a large volume would fail to include everything of merit which has been inspired by national themes, - nor, on the other hand, to a fastidious critical standard. Its only aim is that of presenting anew the noble and popular songs of the past, long endeared to the country's heart, and a still larger amount of stirring contemporary verse, not a little of which has already begun to sing itself into the memory of our time. Without the kind cooperation of Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Company, Messrs. Lee & Shepard, and a few other publishers, it would have been impossible to include several of the finest selections. My thanks are due to them and to all others who have contributed in any way to the success of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Low, subtle whispers of summer-tide - Though edgings of snow still clung beside The jagged rocks, and with half-dazed look - Like a child just waked - lay the sleepy brods! Perchance 'twas the sunshine's lengthened ray, The lowing cattle, the haze that lay On the Milton hills, or that strange spell In the robin's note - I cannot tell - But Huldah, leaving her spinning, knew And felt the restlessness, as she threw The bars of the lattice open! Cool and sweet, As though from some pine wood's deep retreat - With a slow, coy tread, the fresh winds crept Through the sliding bars; on the hearth, wing-swept, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Echoes: Patriotic Poems, Heroic and Pathetic, Humorous and Dialectic, of the Spanish-American War And yet, in their happiest flights of description, the orator and the historian may not hope to equal in vividness and beauty the verbal pictures the poets have drawn for us. In this volume, which is a companion to Martial Recitations, every phase of the short, sharp struggle is represented by its best poem. The wreck of the Maine, the farewell, the camp, the field, the trench, the charge, the sea-fight, the hospital, the soldier's burial, the angels of the Red Cross, the brave wives and mothers, the crowning victory, the soldier's return and his welcome home, - all these the poets have painted for us in words that fairly sparkle, and glow and burn. The interest of the present volume springs, of course, from the selections themselves; and praise, if any is due, belongs to the poets herein represented, rather than to the compiler. Borrowing a beautiful figure from Montaigne, he may say, - I have culled the flowers and furnished the thread that binds them together; but their beauty and fragrance is their own. This volume, then, cannot fail in interest for every patriot. In the hope that it may receive as warm a welcome as that accorded to Martial Recitations, and that it may foster a deeper love for our country whose past is so glorious and whose future is so promising, this book is sent forth upon its mission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotic Poems When this collection of patriotic verse was being made the war cloud had not burst over Europe, but none the less the martial note is the most in sistent in the following pages, which tell of old, unhappy, far-off things, when we were not on good terms with that sweet enemy, France Patriotism must naturally be less manifest when a people is at peace than when it is ranged on the perilous edge of battle. This month a chord has been struck in every heart by King George's confident messages to the Fleet - that it would revive and renew the old glories of the Royal Navy, and prove once again the sure shield of Britain and of her Empire in the hour of trial - and to the Expedi tionary Force on its departure for the front. Yet it is well to remember, especially at such a time as this, that they also serve who only stand and wait, and that a member, say, of the Religious Society of Friends may be as good a patriot as an Admiral or a Field Marshal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Name of Old Glory, Poems of Patriotism In Indiana, under Hayes and Wheeler, there was a boy Of eleven who had been conscious Of the name Of James Whitcomb Riley, for some time: conscious that this name was in the air and that a perceptible joy went with the speaking Of it. He does not to this day forget the lively look, the merry fondness and prophecy Of pleasure, that were in his mother's face on a summer morning when she told him that Mr. Riley was coming to the house. The boy said James Whitcomb Riley? In excitement, though he had merely caught the contagion Of pleasure with which the name was always spoken. And the mother, her eyes dancing, said Yes! Book excerpt: Excerpt from the Prefatory Note: "An attempt has been made in the present collection to gather together the patriotic poems of America, those which depict feelings as well as those which describe actions, since these latter are as indicative of the temper of the time. It is a collection, for the most part, of old favorites, for Americans have been quick to take to heart a stirring telling of a daring and noble deed; but these may be found to have gained freshness by a grouping in order. The arrangement is chronological so far as it might be, that the history of America as told by her poets should be set forth. Here and there occur breaks in the story, chiefly because there are fit incidents for song which no poet has fitly sung as yet."
