Book The Complete Poetical Works of George Darley

Download or read book The Complete Poetical Works of George Darley written by Ramsay Colles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of George Darley: Now First Collected, Reprinted From the Rare Original Editions in the Possession of the Darley Family, and Edited With an Introduction Julius Hare, in welcoming the appearance of Landor's Fra Rupert, wrote to the author that it rested with him, Henry Taylor, and George Darley 'to preserve the life of tragedy in England, ' and Forster in commenting on the facts, says, 'Darley's fine dramatic genius well deserved that compliment.' A little later Thomas Carlyle linked Darley's name witht that of yet another immortal. 'There is a trick, ' he notes, 'of sham Elizabeth writing now prevalent that looks plausible, but in most cases means nothing at all. Darley has real lyrical genius; Taylor, wonderful sense, clearness, and weight of purpose; Tennyson a rich and exquisite fancy. All the other men of our tiny generation that I know of are, in poetry, either feeble or fraudulent.' That a writer whose fine dramatic genius was extolled by a critic of Forter's acumen, and whose real lyrical genius won commendation from one who so seldom indulged 'in the noble pleasure of praising' as did Caryle, should to-day be but little known to the average students of English literature, is not strange when we recall the many instances of the rise and fall of literary reputations, and especially those of poets. Book The Pilgrim of Beauty The Cottager s Sabbath

Download or read book The Pilgrim of Beauty The Cottager s Sabbath written by Samuel Mullen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim of Beauty; The Cottager's Sabbath: And Other Poems, Now First Collected The Writer of the following pages is not an author by profession, nor has he the slightest hope of profit. In their publication. His experience justifies an opposite inference, and he is not disposed to quarrel with the judgment of the public. With a natural tendency to the exercise of the imagination, his avocations, from a very early age, have been of a most engrossing character 5 and the indulgence of his fancy has been allowed purely as a relaxation from labours that have never claimed so little as half of the twenty-four hours which compose the day. The weariness of bodily fatigue has been forgotten in the exercise of the mind, and the actual sorrows of life have been subdued by imaginary griefs. If perfection in the craft of authorship has not been attained, it is still a source of gratification that no duty of life has been neglected in its pursuit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of James Montgomery, Vol. 1 of 4: Including Several Poems Now First Collected, With a Sketch of His Life He was so disheartened by this circumstance, that, on occasion of a misuhderstanding with Mr. Harrison, he, at the end of eight months, quitted the metropolis, and returned to Wath, where he was received with a hearty welcome by his former employer. While in London, having been advised to turn his attention in prose, as mean profitable than verse, he composed an eastern story which he took one evening to-a publish er in the east end of the town. Being directed through the shop, to the private room of the great man, he' presented his manuscript in form. The prudent bookseller read the title, marked the number of pages, counted the lines in a page, and made a calculation of 'the whole; then turning to the author, who stood in astonishment at this summary mode of deciding on the merit of a work of imagination, he very civilly return ed the copy, saying, Sir, your manuscript is too small it won't do for me - take it to he publishes these kind of things. Montgomery retreated with so much confgeion from the presence of the bookseller, that in passing through the shop, he dashed his unfortunate head against a patent lamp, broke the glass, spilled the oil, and making an awkward apology to the shopmen, who were tittering behind the counter, to the no small mortification of the poor author, be rushed into the street, equally unable to restrain his venation. Or his laughter, and retired to his home, filled with chagrin and disappointment at this ludicrous and untoward misadventure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems and Fables of Robert Henryson: Now First Collected, With Notes, and a Memoir of His Life Every Manuscript known to contain any poems attri buted to henryson has been carefully consulted; and the early printed editions, all of them of the utmost degree of rarity, have not been overlooked. It is unnecessary to specify these in this place, as they are particularly described in the Notes. In regard to the Author's personal history, scanty as the notices may be, fortunately he is not like many of our Old Makars, whose writings have perished, and who stand beforeus in a dim shadowy obscurity, affording some tran sient glimpse, or with the mere sound of a name; while of others the few unimportant reliques that have reached our times, serve only to indicate that such persons had ever existed.
