Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siegfried Loraine Sassoon, CBE, MC (8 September 1886 - 1 September 1967) was an English poet, writer, and soldier. Decorated for bravery on the Western Front, he became one of the leading poets of the First World War. His poetry both described the horrors of the trenches and satirised the patriotic pretensions of those who, in Sassoon's view, were responsible for a jingoism-fuelled war. Sassoon became a focal point for dissent within the armed forces when he made a lone protest against the continuation of the war in his "Soldier's Declaration" of 1917, culminating in his admission to a military psychiatric hospital. Sassoon later won acclaim for his prose work, notably his three-volume fictionalised autobiography, collectively known as the "Sherston trilogy".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Echoes: Patriotic Poems, Heroic and Pathetic, Humorous and Dialectic, of the Spanish-American War And yet, in their happiest flights of description, the orator and the historian may not hope to equal in vividness and beauty the verbal pictures the poets have drawn for us. In this volume, which is a companion to Martial Recitations, every phase of the short, sharp struggle is represented by its best poem. The wreck of the Maine, the farewell, the camp, the field, the trench, the charge, the sea-fight, the hospital, the soldier's burial, the angels of the Red Cross, the brave wives and mothers, the crowning victory, the soldier's return and his welcome home, - all these the poets have painted for us in words that fairly sparkle, and glow and burn. The interest of the present volume springs, of course, from the selections themselves; and praise, if any is due, belongs to the poets herein represented, rather than to the compiler. Borrowing a beautiful figure from Montaigne, he may say, - I have culled the flowers and furnished the thread that binds them together; but their beauty and fragrance is their own. This volume, then, cannot fail in interest for every patriot. In the hope that it may receive as warm a welcome as that accorded to Martial Recitations, and that it may foster a deeper love for our country whose past is so glorious and whose future is so promising, this book is sent forth upon its mission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In War Time: Poems That have tried to write how much I love, Keep in my heart unending love for you, Who showed me the royal road, and went your Wa s, Leaving me loneliness in all my days. Dear and best friend, you know that this is true, That there 's a room hid deep within my heart Love - guarded and apart, To which you, and you only hold the key. My Dear, you gave so very much to me; You were so strong and dear and kindly wise. Now I can wake the laughter in your eyes No more, nor hold your dear kind hands again, I know that I have reached Life's utmost pain, That shall not heal for coming of the day. My Very Dear, there is so much to say, So much I shall remember, so much set Within my heart. Starlight upon your spurs, Your hands upon the reins, And the quiet English lanes Lit with your bivouac fires and leafy Junes And the long lazy Summer afternoons Upon the river. And Northampton fields, Rain-clouded, all the pride. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of the Great War The responsibility for the selection of the poems included in this volume rests entirely on my shoulders, though I am pleased to acknowledge the very kind help on this side of the Atlantic of Mr. Edward C. Marsh of the Macmillan Company, Miss Helen Rex Keller, Librarian of the School of Journalism, and Professor A. H. Thorndike of Columbia University; in England of Mr. F. Madan, Bodley's Librarian, Mr. G. W. Wheeler and Mr. J. W. Smallwood of the Radcliffe Camera, Oxford, Sir Walter Raleigh, Lady Scallon, Mr. A. R. Waller, Sir Adolphus Ward, and Sir Herbert Warren. While poetic merit has been, of course, the paramount consideration, I have endeavored to exercise a catholic judgment, and to give fair representation to various schools of thought and expression as well as to the various phases of the War. Download or read book War Poems written by Siegfried Sassoon and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems gathered here, which trace the course of the First World War, are an extraordinary testimony to the almost unimaginable experiences of a combatant in that bitter conflict. Moving from the patriotic optimism of the first few poems (...fighting for our freedom, we are free) to the anguish and anger of the later work (where hope, with furtive eyes and grappling fists / Flounders in mud...), there comes a point when the reality of trench-warfare and its aftershocks move beyond comprehension: Sassoon knows this, and it becomes a powerful element in his art. As a book, the images have a cumulative relentlessness that make it almost impossible to read more than a few poems in one sitting. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
