Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins comes a twelfth collection of poetry offering over fifty new poems that showcase the generosity, wit, and imaginative play that prompted The Wall Street Journal to call him “America’s favorite poet.” The Rain in Portugal—a title that admits he’s not much of a rhymer—sheds Collins’s ironic light on such subjects as travel and art, cats and dogs, loneliness and love, beauty and death. His tones range from the whimsical—“the dogs of Minneapolis . . . / have no idea they’re in Minneapolis”—to the elegiac in a reaction to the death of Seamus Heaney. A student of the everyday, Collins here contemplates a weather vane, a still life painting, the calendar, and a child lost at a beach. His imaginative fabrications have Shakespeare flying comfortably in first class and Keith Richards supporting the globe on his head. By turns entertaining, engaging, and enlightening, The Rain in Portugal amounts to another chorus of poems from one of the most respected and familiar voices in the world of American poetry. Praise for The Rain in Portugal “Nothing in Billy Collins’s twelfth book . . . is exactly what readers might expect, and that’s the charm of this collection.”—The Washington Post “This new collection shows [Collins] at his finest. . . . Certain to please his large readership and a good place for readers new to Collins to begin.”—Library Journal “Disarmingly playful and wistfully candid.”—Booklist

Download or read book Log Book written by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and published by Carcanet Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Sophia de Mello Breyner, long regarded as among Portugal's major poets, poetry is a way of seeing and receiving life.`Poetry,' she writes, `is an art of being. It does not require my time and labour. It does not ask me to have a science or an aesthetics or a theory. Instead it demands the entireness of my being, a consciousness running deeper than my intellect, a fidelity purer than any I can control.' Greece, as much as Portugal, informs the geography, mythology and vehement light of Breyner's work. Greece also informs her sense of the achieved lyric. Even in the poems which touch most closely on personal themes of love, loss and expectation, the language remains our common language, without affectation or coy eccentricity. Her pursuit of right words and a right world is one and the same.

Download or read book Sonnets from the Portuguese written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Barrett Browning is perhaps the most famous and well received female poet of the nineteenth century. She was an iconoclast, known for her courageous and transgressive views. Her liberal and progressive ideas have surfaced in much of her poetry. In The Runaway Slave At Pilgrim's Point, she writes down about one of the social issues that plagued her times, that of slave trade. Such poetry was heavily charged with political as well as religious ideas. Indeed, she was also an eminent religious writer, as can be seen in many of her works like A Musical Instrument. When one reads all of her poetry, one finds that an ambivalent picture arises. Elizabeth Barrett Browning also wrote about the treatment of women in the nineteenth century. Heavily influenced by the work of Mary Wollstonecraft, whose controversial book A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) set the tone for later feminist writings, many of her own works saw the recurrent themes of exploration of "The Woman Question". In poems like The Romance of the Swan's Nest and The Romaunt of the Page, she criticizes the way women are peripheralized in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sonnets From the Portuguese" was written for Robert Browning, the famous poet who affectionately nicknamed Elizabeth his "little Portuguese." The sequence in "Sonnets From the Portuguese" is a celebration of marriage, and of one of the most famous romances of the nineteenth century. Recognized for their Victorian tradition and discipline, these are some of the most passionate and memorable love poems in the English language. There are forty-four poems in the collection, including the very beautiful sonnet, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a prolific writer and reviewer in the Victorian period, and in her lifetime, her reputation as a poet was at least as great as that of her husband, poet Robert Browning. Some of her poetry has been noted in recent years for strong feminist themes, but the poems for which Elizabeth Barrett Browning is undoubtedly best know are "Sonnets from the Portuguese."
