This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over twenty years ago my mother, Bonnie Ashworth, passed along to me an old, worn ledger book. The book contained poetry written over one hundred and fifty years ago by her great-great-grandfather and passed down to her by her Grandmother, Caroline Billingham Bentz (Grandpa MurphyÕs granddaughter.) The family possessed several pictures of the author, but no one in the clan could remember precisely who this lyrical ancestor was. He was known to the family as simply ÒGrandpa Murphy.Ó The acquisition of this family heirloom marked the beginning of my long search for the identity of the mysterious Grandpa Murphy, and my family history in general; a search that would ultimately lead me to a small historical society basement on the Northern Neck of Virginia where many of my questions began to be answered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neck of the World is the eleventh volume in the prestigious May Swenson Poetry Award series. In it, Daniel Rzicznek offers poems that, in quick angular language, capture the natural world and at the same time extend it into a surreal vision, sometimes dream-like, sometimes dark. Alice Quinn, judge for the 2007 Swenson Award, says this of Rzicznek’s work: “Throughout, the language pulsates, always vigorous, by turns knotty and crystalline. . . . In Neck of the World, we have a poet with a striking new vision--challenging, rewarding, and bold."

Book excerpt: In her fourth full-length book, White Blood: A Lyric of Virginia, Kiki Petrosino turns her gaze to Virginia, where she digs into her genealogical and intellectual roots, while contemplating the knotty legacies of slavery and discrimination in the Upper South. From a stunning double crown sonnet, to erasure poetry contained within DNA testing results, the poems in this collection are as wide-ranging in form as they are bountiful in wordplay and truth. In her poem 'The Shop at Monticello,' she writes: 'I’m a black body in this Commonwealth, which turned black bodies/ into money. Now, I have money to spend on little trinkets to remind me/ of this fact. I’m a money machine & my body constitutes the common wealth.' Speaking to history, loss, and injustice with wisdom, innovation, and a scientific determination to find the poetic truth, White Blood plants Petrosino’s name ever more firmly in the contemporary canon.

  • Pages : 102 pages

Download or read book From the Bones Out written by Marisa De los Santos and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My lover tells me I am like this place./I tell him what I miss: the slap of leaves/on skin and air that's like a damp embrace. The poems of this debut have a Cinderella-like innocence, transforming ugliness into beauty and waving the wand of well-crafted metaphor over all they encounter. The horrific suicide of a grandfather, a mother's cancer, the mourning for a stillborn child, the potential foreclosure of a neighbor's farm are all recounted with a refined clarity. Yet through it all, de los Santos manages to frame life's traumas with a voice that can seem borrowed from the Stage Manager in Our Town: Some years/were fair, but most were bad./The taxes, worse than weevil, tried/to take each dime she had. However, there are also poems, such as Io's Gift, that evoke, through their subtlety and sensuality, the pleasures of the ever-changing consciousness of the female body: I learned myself, bit/ by bit, or maybe I/ should say I dawned/ upon myself, a slow dawning. There are also glamorous poems, including Supermodel, and Perfect Dress, in which the poet indulges in herself as an object of perfect beauty: Someone will murmur, /'She is sublime, '/will be precisely right, and I will step, /with incandescent shoulders, / into my perfect evening. In its worked simplicity, this is a first book that offers a formula of hope and clarity when confronting life's trials and tribulations.

Book Unaccompanied

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Copper Canyon Press
  • Release : 2018-05-01
  • ISBN : 1619321777
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Unaccompanied written by Javier Zamora and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestselling Author of Solito "Every line resonates with a wind that crosses oceans."—Jamaal May "Zamora's work is real life turned into myth and myth made real life." —Glappitnova Javier Zamora was nine years old when he traveled unaccompanied 4,000 miles, across multiple borders, from El Salvador to the United States to be reunited with his parents. This dramatic and hope-filled poetry debut humanizes the highly charged and polarizing rhetoric of border-crossing; assesses borderland politics, race, and immigration on a profoundly personal level; and simultaneously remembers and imagines a birth country that's been left behind. Through an unflinching gaze, plainspoken diction, and a combination of Spanish and English, Unaccompanied crosses rugged terrain where families are lost and reunited, coyotes lead migrants astray, and "the thin white man let us drink from a hose / while pointing his shotgun." From "Let Me Try Again": He knew we weren't Mexican. He must've remembered his family coming over the border, or the border coming over them, because he drove us to the border and told us next time, rest at least five days, don't trust anyone calling themselves coyotes, bring more tortillas, sardines, Alhambra. He knew we would try again. And again—like everyone does. Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador and immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. He earned a BA at UC-Berkeley, an MFA at New York University, and is a 2016–2018 Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.

Book Poems by the Red Neck Poet

Download or read book Poems by the Red Neck Poet written by Brion L. Morse and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated in Brions introduction, these poems were written and intended as a testimonial of one mans life for his children and grandchildren. The poems grew into something bigger; seeing the importance for as Gods words states in II, Timothy 3:16-17 all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for re-proof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Brion thanks his God for the inspiration he has given him on several of these poems. He thanks his daughters as workers and inspiration also. It has never been his intention to hurt anyone with his writings. If so, get over it and change your life as well. The last poem of this book is Brions letter to any addict struggling to overcome a hard addictive behavior. Get and seek the help you need. Believe in the true God and please dont victimize your family. Brion hopes these readings have been enjoyable and inspirational, but most of all, this is and was his testimonial throughout time for his children and grandchildren of who their father and grandfather was.

This book was released on 1866 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866) is the first book of poetry published by American author Herman Melville. The volume is dedicated "To the Memory of the Three Hundred Thousand Who in the War For the Maintenance of the Union Fell Devotedly Under the Flag of Their Country" and its 72 poems deal with the battles and personalities of the American Civil War and their aftermath. Critics at the time were at best respectful and often sharply critical of Melville's unorthodox style. The book had sold only 486 copies by 1868 and recovered barely half of its publications costs.[1] Not until the latter half of the twentieth century did Battle-Pieces become regarded as one of the most important group of poems on the American Civil War.

Book Poems of the American South

Download or read book Poems of the American South written by David Biespiel and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind collection of poems about the American South ranges over four centuries of its dramatic history. The arc of poetry of the South, from slave songs to Confederate hymns to Civil War ballads, from Reconstruction turmoil to the Agrarian movement to the dazzling poetry of the New South, is richly varied and historically vibrant. No other region of the United States has been as mythologized as the South, nor contained as many fascinating, beguiling, and sometimes infuriating contradictions. Poems of the American South includes poems both by Southerners and by famous observers of the South who hailed from elsewhere. These range from Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, and Francis Scott Key through Langston Hughes, Robert Penn Warren, Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, James Dickey, and Donald Justice, and include a host of living poets as well: Wendell Berry, Rita Dove, Sandra Cisneros, Yusef Komunyakaa, Naomi Shihab Nye, C. D. Wright, Natasha Trethewey, and many more. Organized thematically, the anthology places poems from past centuries in fruitful dialogue with a diverse array of modern voices who are redefining the South with a verve that is reinvigorating American poetry as a whole.
