Book Sisyphus In The City and Other Poems

Download or read book Sisyphus In The City and Other Poems written by T.D. Richards and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these poems, T.D. Richards imaginatively and unflinchingly examines the oddness of old age- “a rutabaga/ ripening inside us/ unnoticed till winter/ when knuckles sprout knobs/ and lips turn purple, skin/the color of mud.” As the poet presents strikingly original images of old age, he also offers insights related to coming to terms with it. Like Camus’ hero, who creates his life meaning through the task of rolling a boulder uphill, the speaker in Sisyphus in the City finds value in digging up and arranging the touchstones of his life. A snatch of song, two cardinals on the feeder, a grandmother’s potbelly stove, the scent of Shalimar and Old Spice - this and more become “treasure unearthed for one last look.” Shari Wagner, Indiana Poet Laureate, author of “The Harmonist at Nightfall” The pure art of metaphor- “stirring of stone soup” and “rutabaga ripening inside of us”- is evident throughout. But what best demonstrates Richards’s curious eye are the everyday things, like the “earthy scent” that “issues from the unwashed hollow of our arms” and the trash man, “lifting garbage cans like prized trophies won at the Olympics.” And who would not want to be in the car when Fats Domino grabs the wheel heading home from the 1950s prom? John Bowman, published poet and author of “This Could Be the House I Die In” In “Sisyphus in the City,” T. D. Richards’ poems move beyond a dialectic between life’s hardships and its joys, imploring readers to discover the sweetness of life amidst the bitter, and thus we find the characters in his poems humming, dancing, drinking, and celebrating, all while living within the harsh realities of the world. The strength of Richards’ poems are in their message but also in their language. Sensory details create visceral poems that allow readers to feel the worlds and characters he creates. “…..the scent of Shalimar/ and Old Spice blend on the dance floor/ ablaze with the heat of bodies/..” By complementing language with message, Richards leaves readers feeling they’ve traversed life itself, not always easy, yet certainly worth celebrating. Kyle D. Craig, published poet and author of “Invisible Tea.”

Book excerpt: In this stunning collection of new poems, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has defined her life’s work, describing with wonder both the everyday and the unaffected beauty of nature. Herons, sparrows, owls, and kingfishers flit across the page in meditations on love, artistry, and impermanence. Whether considering a bird’s nest, the seeming patience of oak trees, or the artworks of Franz Marc, Oliver reminds us of the transformative power of attention and how much can be contained within the smallest moments. At its heart, Blue Horses asks what it means to truly belong to this world, to live in it attuned to all its changes. Humorous, gentle, and always honest, Oliver is a visionary of the natural world.

Book Limericks for the Ladies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harold K. Gruver
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2013-04
  • ISBN : 1479792144
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book Limericks for the Ladies written by Harold K. Gruver and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Dreckle My grandma Gruver used to call me her "chewed resin." I'm not certain I'm spelling that right as I've never seen it in print. I was always certain that I was special with her. When I would ask for lemonade or some such treat, she would also say "in a dreckle." It only took a few times to understand that I was waiting for the urge to hit her. When I went to Rome Elementary School, Wally Bryant, who taught me to tie my shoes well after I started grade school, said that she probably meant "directly." I was always hearing about the shortest distance between two points, but "directly" never really meant as a crow would fly at our house. When I got in the Navy, I encountered "hurry up and wait" in its fullest glory. It did not take me too long after that to figure out that the naval command had made some long-distance calls to Grandma Gruver to really fully understand the significance of the word "directly." Now I since have heard the old song about the frog who went courting. The Brothers Four related that Frogg took the direct approach. This comes closest to my way of thinking. In my book, I never tell a girl that she is the most beautiful girl in the world if she isn't. I suppose that there are exact syllable counts for all five lines of a limerick. My feeling is to say the words in the straight way of speaking and still have the rhyme. With the exact syllable count in place, sometimes a person just can't say it all. My grandma Young, furthermore, would have told me to tell a girl that I love her in words and syntax that she could understand. While many of the poems are not limericks, most are. These are real girls, and in all cases, I like them very much. Nearly all the girls have a copy of the poems I wrote them. Sadly, in the process, some of the poems got lost. To those girls, I am very sorry.

Book The Blueberry Years

Download or read book The Blueberry Years written by Jim Minick and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A truly inspiring story, in gorgeous prose, about one family's journey into blueberry farming. Delicious reading." —Naomi Wolf, author of The End of America The Blueberry Years is a mouth-watering and delightful memoir based on Jim Minick's trials and tribulations as an organic blueberry farmer. This story of one couple and one farm shows how our country's appetite for cheap food affects how that food is grown, who does or does not grow it, and what happens to the land. But this memoir also calls attention to the fragile nature of our global food system and our nation's ambivalence about what we eat and where it comes from. Readers of Michael Polland and Barbara Kingsolver will savor the tale of Jim's farm and the exploration of larger issues facing agriculture in the United States—like the rise of organic farming, the plight of small farmers, and the loneliness common in rural America. Ultimately, The Blueberry Years tells the story of a place shaped by a young couple's dream, and how that dream ripened into one of the mid-Atlantic's first certified-organic, pick-your-own blueberry farms.

Book excerpt: Growing up during Americas worst economic depression brought unique challenges. This book tells of life before many of the things we take for granted today were available, e.g. refrigerators, television sets, clothes washers and dryers, bath tubs, enough to eat, and clothes that werent hand-me-downs. It was a time when playing baseball with buddies was time consuming and didnt cost anything. One bat, one baseball, a few gloves and no parents to watch was all a bunch of youngsters needed to play for hours. Times were tough, but they were great!

Book excerpt: He drifts away under sunny leaves And stands beside the waiting bus, a skinny boy of thirteen, As soft good-byes expressed in his ear tilt the smile off his face ... In this collection of poetry, Andrew Byrne combines a strong voice with a keen wit as he explores conflict and resolution and questions whether fate determines the course of our lives. Byrne, a seasoned poet, uses clever wordplay to observe how vulnerable we are in personal relationships as well as in society. In an animated, open, and unsparing style, he shares lyrical verse about love and loss, violence, death, and betrayal reexplored not only through modern eyes, but through mythical and ancient figures such as Orpheus, Heracles, and Achilles. First Words is a diverse collection of poetry that shares one man's view of the world, designed to provoke emotion, humor, and most importantly, reflection on the beauty of life."A journey to remember." -Albert DeGenova, poet, editor, and publisher of After Hours magazine "A catholic sensibility and untrammeled imagination combine to create an original poetic voice that is ... wry, witty, dark, and hilarious ..." -P. Hertel, editor of After Hours magazine
