Book excerpt: This exquisitely giftable anthology of poems about age and aging reveals the wisdom of trailblazing writers who found power and growth later in life. At eighty-two, the novelist Penelope Lively wrote: "Our experience is one unknown to most of humanity, over time. We are the pioneers." Coming to Age is a collection of dispatches from the great poet-pioneers who have been fortunate enough to live into their later years. Those later years can be many things: a time of harvesting, of gathering together the various strands of the past and weaving them into a rich fabric. They can also be a new beginning, an exploration of the unknown. We speak of "growing old." And indeed, as we too often forget, aging is growing, growing into a new stage of life, one that can be a fulfillment of all that has come before. To everything there is a season. Poetry speaks to them all. Just as we read newspapers for news of the world, we read poetry for news of ourselves. Poets, particularly those who have lived and written into old age, have much to tell us. Bringing together a range of voices both present and past, from Emily Dickinson and W. H. Auden to Louise Gluck and Li-Young Lee, Coming to Age reveals new truths, offers spiritual sustenance, and reminds us of what we already know but may have forgotten, illuminating the profound beauty and significance of commonplace moments that become more precious and radiant as we grow older.

Book excerpt: I was born March 31, 1908, on a small farm in Illinois. I can barely remember my father playing in the town band. He also taught music at night in our old school house. I was only six at that time. He was also bass singer in a male quartet. I remember those songs to this day. My mother always sang while she worked & I can still remember those old Gospel songs. She also wrote poems & won several prizes from different magazines. That has all stayed with me. In high school I played the old trombone & was chosen to participate in all the musicals as I could sing then. I got married quite young & had three children. Jobs were scarce so we journeyed to California. I had to quit my singing. Later I joined the Elks Lodge & joined their chorus, & found that I could sing, so I joined the Barbershop quartet singers for ten years. Soon after that I began writing songs then I found that all my lyrics rhymed so I began writing poetry. Now I have over 200 songs & over 200 poems put in book form. My book no. 1 has 91 poems & book no. 2 has 100 poems. I am now on my third book. To order contact: Carl F. Becker, 2300-234 E. Valley Pkwy, Escondido, CA. 92027 (619) 746-2218.

Book excerpt: In She Walks in Beauty, Caroline Kennedy has once again marshaled the gifts of our greatest poets to pay a very personal tribute to the human experience, this time to the complex and fascinating subject of womanhood. Inspired by her own reflections on more than fifty years of life as a young girl, a woman, a wife, and a mother, She Walks in Beauty draws on poetry's eloquent wisdom to ponder the many joys and challenges of being a woman. Kennedy has divided the collection into sections that signify to her the most notable milestones, passages, and universal experiences in a woman's life, and she begins each of these sections with an introduction in which she explores and celebrates the most important elements of life's journey. The collection includes works by Elizabeth Bishop, Sharon Olds, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, W. H. Auden, Adrienne Rich, Sandra Cisneros, Anne Sexton, W. S. Merwin, Dorothy Parker, Queen Elizabeth I, Lucille Clifton, Naomi Shahib Nye, and W. B. Yeats. Whether it's falling in love, breaking up, friendship, marriage, motherhood, or growing old, She Walks in Beauty is a priceless resource for anyone, male or female, who wants a deeper understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a woman.

Book excerpt: Older Now: Poems is a collection of LELjrs most recent poetry. As with his first collection, Out of My Mind: Poems, the new book reflects on parenthood, romantic love, aging, memory, and mortality in their various expressionscontemplation, introspection, insight, and emotionas he has grown older. The poems are more inward-looking than the earlier ones. I am everyone I have ever been, he says. Yet as he writes in the title poem, he says I find myself in a narrowing space between memory and mortality, and I am not at all sure which way to look as he explores T. S. Eliots overwhelming question: Has it all been worth it? He hopes these poems evoked similar types of reflection by readers who are, will someday be, or know someone who is older now.

Book excerpt: A group of seniors, members of a poetry class in Mosholu-Montefiore Senior Center, has created a collection of poems; exciting, humorous, and tender as nature. These poems will make the readers look at life in a different way. The new perspective will be to celebrate life, and invite others to join the feast of fulfillment. Seniors wrote this unique selection of poems, to share their inspiration with others. Their memories are intact, with accuracy in their approach. Their ages range between sixty-two and ninety. Celebrating life is their philosophy of living, transmitting a message in every word of their poems. It is like a rainbow of emotions, each one unique in beauty, and deep in their metaphors and allegories. This book was written to fit the readers of this new millennium, regardless of their age, race, beliefs, gender and social status. "Taking a little time to read these poems releases one's spirit to appreciate things, people and ideas otherwise taken for granted. These poems make us linger on beautiful thoughts, memories and hopes for the bright hours ahead." Rabbi Eugene S. Katz Chaplain, Montefiore Medical Center "This collection of poems is heartfelt, sweet and funny. The poetry depicts a voice of a certain era and portrays an awareness of the outside world as well as a personal experience." Robin Lettieri, Library Director Port Chester/Rye Brook "A truly heartwarming and thought-provoking collection of poems from those who have a lifetime of thoughts and ideas to share." Francine Nowes, Regional Coordinator Mosholu-Montefi ore Senior Center

Book Rhyme with Seniors in Mind

Download or read book Rhyme with Seniors in Mind written by Clay Warren and published by E-Booktime, LLC. This book was released on 2014-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I shy away from using the word "Poem," I prefer to use the word "Rhyme." Though some of these pieces are certainly poems, there's little or no controversy, profundity, inimicalness, or resentment. Just a few political references. So much of today's poetry is over my head, not a difficult feat, but you won't find that in this book. Except for "Alias the Rose" you could read anything in this book in your Sunday school class. I didn't start writing until after I retired and my wife passed away. So being a dirty old m... I mean seasoned citizen, most of these rhymes are geared toward seniors and living in a retirement community. Any of the rhymes that have the term "Villager" or "The Villages," refer to the retirement community where I live. Most of these pieces were conjured up while sitting in my driveway watching the world pass me by and working my way through a six-pack and a cigar. Something I heard or read stuck in my feeble mind and like an Oreo cookie I'd get the top and the bottom and then fill in the middle. The stories, some are fiction and some are anecdotes from my childhood.
