Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that every person has at least one book in them. This must be my attempt at fulfilling this aspiration. This book has been brewing for many years and I am thankful that I inculcated the discipline of writing, polishing and saving each poem over the years. This anthology of poems represents snapshots from my life over many decades. It is also a tribute to the girls and women who have passed through my life. But it is not all autobiographical; much of my poetry has been conjured up from keen observation and a fertile imagination.

Book Robert Frost Sixteen Poems to Learn by Heart

Download or read book Robert Frost Sixteen Poems to Learn by Heart written by Robert Frost and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate Robert Frost's 150th birthday with a deluxe keepsake edition featuring 16 of his greatest poems—with brilliant essays highlighting his special genius and the power of memorization to unlock the magic of his language During a public reading Robert Frost was once asked why he so frequently recited his poems from memory. With typical wit, he replied: “If they won’t stick to me, I won’t stick to them.” Remarkably among the modern poets, his poems “stick” to the reader: "Mending Wall," with its famous invocation of the rural maxim "Good fences make good neighbors" "The Road Not Taken," about the beguiling possibilities of life "Birches," which reminds us that "One could do worse than be a swinger of birches "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," with its unforgettable final line: "And miles to go before I sleep." Here, poet and Frost biographer Jay Parini presents these and 12 other Frost poems to learn by heart. In short accompanying commentaries, Parini illuminates the stylistic and imaginative features of each of the poems, drawing in biographical material from Frost’s life to provide further context. “The goal of this little book is to encourage readers to slow down—to listen to Frost’s words and phrases, to locate their deepest rhythms, and hear the tune of each poem as it unfolds. . . . Memorizing a poem can teach us much about a poem’s structure and argument, and about the resonance of particular words. And best of all, memorization makes a poem part of our inner lives. Once committed to memory, a poem is available to us for recall at any time—and the occasions for remembering it will make themselves known to us. It isn’t something we have to work at.” Anyone who has read and loved Frost’s poetry will want to own and treasure this little gift edition. Those reading Frost for the first time or those wishing to become better acquainted with one of America’s greatest poets will not find a better, more insightful guide than Jay Parini.

Writing in the Shadow describes the risks these people ran and the ingenuity and brilliant improvisation they used to hoodwink the Nazis and distribute newsletters to tens of thousands of people.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the key terms ‘truth’ and ‘misinformation’ in the light of Anne Sexton’s Complete Poems. The author argues that what characterizes her poems is their heightened level of transparency; poem after poem, she establishes a close relationship with the reader through recording a detailed account of her private stories. Book A New History of Spanish Literature

Download or read book A New History of Spanish Literature written by Richard E. Chandler and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-09-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, A New History of Spanish Literature has been a much-used resource for generations of students. The book has now been completely revised and updated to include extensive discussion of Spanish literature of the past thirty years. Richard E. Chandler and Kessel Schwartz, both longtime students of the literature, write authoritatively about every Spanish literary work of consequence. From the earliest extant writings though the literature of the 1980s, they draw on the latest scholarship. Unlike most literary histories, this one treats each genre fully in its own section, thus making it easy for the reader to follow the development of poetry, the drama, the novel, other prose fiction, and nonfiction prose. Students of the first edition have found this method particularly useful. However, this approach does not preclude study of the literature by period. A full index easily enables the reader to find all references to any individual author or book. Another noteworthy feature of the book, and one omitted from many books of this kind, is the comprehensive attention the authors accord nonfiction prose, including, for example, essays, philosophy, literary criticism, politics, and historiography. Encyclopedic in scope yet concise and eminently readable, the revised edition of A New History of Spanish Literature bids fair to be the standard reference well into the next century.

Crow, a leading Hispanist, has culled the best translations available--by such poets as Richard Franshawe, Edward Fitzgerald, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, Robert Southey, and many distinguished modern poets--of poems ranging from the eleventh century to the present to make this the most complete collection of both Spanish and Spanish American poetry in English translation. Represented here is work by such twentieth century poets as Gabriela Mistral, Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Anotnio Machado, and Juan Ramón Jiménez, many of whom the editor has known personally. The inclusion of many contemporary poets whose verse has never before appeared in English makes this anthology a particularly valuable collection.

Book Dancing Between the Notes

  • Author : John Fenton
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2018-05-02
  • ISBN : 1514466783
  • Pages : 59 pages

Download or read book Dancing Between the Notes written by John Fenton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of these poems were written with specific jazz tunes playing in my head. As I wrote each poem, the lines sang themselves into fragments, time was displaced, and reharmonization occurred. What started as one thing gradually became another. The remaining poems were written with the song lines of a place or event or the rhythms of the road as guide. I wrote as a voyeur watching life from a safe distance, an eavesdropper, a marginalien. The links between poetry and improvised music are as ancient as language itself, and telling stories in new ways is fundamental to human existence. It is not a choice. I hope that I have captured the essence of the musicians world and the marginaliens found along the way.
