Book A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty four Modern Anglo Welsh Writers

Download or read book A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty four Modern Anglo Welsh Writers written by John Harris and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most detailed guide in existence to a significant portion of the now extensive English-language literature of Wales. Two dozen major writers, who are generally associated with the Anglo-Welsh literary renaissance, are covered here. Some, like Dylan Thomas, are internationally known figures who have been the subject of bibliographies: in these cases the treatment here is the most up-to-date and comprehensive yet published. Others, less well-known outside Wales, are given full bibliographical treatment for the first time. The volume will therefore be indispensable to students and teachers of literature in English at all levels. The bibliography lists publications by and about each chosen writer. Primary sections record the writer's monographic output - in all editions and translations - as well as uncollected contributions to books, periodicals and newspapers. Secondary lists include critical and biographical studies of each writer: independent monographs, sections of books, periodical essays and academic theses. Two important sections preface the individual author bibliographies, one covering anthologies of Anglo-Welsh poetry and prose, the other a range of general critical and background studies. In all, this bibliography, with close on 6,000 selectively annotated entries, provides an indispensable reference guide to a developing area of literary and cultural research.

Book The Contemporary Medieval in Practice

Download or read book The Contemporary Medieval in Practice written by Clare A. Lees and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary arts, both practice and methods, offer medieval scholars innovative ways to examine, explore, and reframe the past. Medievalists offer contemporary studies insights into cultural works of the past that have been made or reworked in the present. Creative-critical writing invites the adaptation of scholarly style using forms such as the dialogue, short essay, and the poem; these are, the authors argue, appropriate ways to explore innovative pathways from the contemporary to the medieval, and vice versa. Speculative and non-traditional, The Contemporary Medieval in Practice adapts the conventional scholarly essay to reflect its cross-disciplinary, creative subject. This book ‘does’ Medieval Studies differently by bringing it into relation with the field of contemporary arts and by making ‘practice’, in the sense used by contemporary arts and by creative-critical writing, central to it. Intersecting with a number of urgent critical discourses and cultural practices, such as the study of the environment and the ethics of understanding bodies, identities, and histories, this short, accessible book offers medievalists a distinctive voice in multi-disciplinary, trans-chronological, collaborative conversations about the Humanities. Its subject is early medieval British culture, often termed Anglo-Saxon Studies (c. 500–1100), and its relation with, use of, and re-working in contemporary visual, poetic, and material culture (after 1950). ‘The Contemporary Medieval in Practice is both wise and unafraid to take risks. Fully embedded in scholarship yet reaching into unmapped territory, the authors move across disciplines and forge surprising links. Thought-provoking and evocative, this is a book that will have an impact that far belies its modest length.’ – Linda Anderson, Newcastle University

'Intense, moving, and darkly comic' New Zealand Herald When an affair ends badly and takes her career down with it, 26-year-old Erin leaves Auckland to spend the holiday weekend with her aunt, uncle, and terminally ill mother at their suburban family home. On arrival she learns that her mother has decided to take matters into her own hands and end her life – the following Tuesday. Tasked with fulfilling her mother’s final wishes, Erin can only do her imperfect best to navigate difficult feelings, an eccentric neighbourhood, and her complicated family of former competitive swimmers. She must summon the strength she would normally find in the water as she prepares for the loss of the fiery, independent woman who raised her alone, and one last swim together in the cold New Zealand Sea.
