Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocket Guide to the Common Land Birds of New England The student may occasionally be puzzled by finding, after one description of a bird in the key, the words either sex, and after another descrip tion of the same bird the word female. In some cases, as, for example, the pine warbler, the females vary widely, sometimes quite closely resembling the male, sometimes being decidedly unlike them. Hence two descriptions of a female are necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Birds of Northern New York: A Pocket Guide to Common Land, Birds of the St. Lawrence Valley, and the Lowlands in General, of Northern New York After all has been said for the observant love of nature the best is that it can keep its votary young at heart in a world like this. The birds in particular, friends the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, may even prove the source of a certain faith. Confiding, vivacious; so intense in their fellings, so impulsive, so overflowing with life, so full of freedom and song or the spirit of song - they are in a remarkable degree congenial with what is fairest and best in childhood; indeed they may well be regarded as symbolic of it. To "Joe," "Brownie" and "Hope." his children, in whose presence and the birds he finds his own childhood largely revivified, the author lovingly dedicates this little book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baby Bird-Finder Illustrated: A Pocket Guide to the Common Water and Game Birds and Hawks and Owls of New England With Blank Pages for Notes The water and game birds and the birds of prey are often omitted by the amateur, and it is hoped that this little book will arouse a new interest in their study and protection. The last of July the shore birds begin to arrive from the northfduring August and Sep tember they continue to come and go, by the first of October most of them have gone. Then begins the flight of the ducks. Many of these remain through the winter. A day at the beach in late fall or midwinter_ is a pleasant outing, and many a delightful hour may be spent watching the birds off shore. At Lynn, Revere or other pro tected waters they are more confident and easier to approach. A few days at Chatham or Nantucket in the fall or late summer is an interesting experience. There one may secure the services of a fisherman and his dory and get acquainted with the ocean birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Land Birds and Game Birds of New England

Download or read book The Land Birds and Game Birds of New England written by H. D. Minot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land-Birds and Game-Birds of New England: With Descriptions of the Birds, Their Nests and Eggs, Their Habits and Notes, With Illustrations This volume has been written to fill a place hitherto vacant in ornithological literature. The works of Wilson, Audubon, and Nuttall, are costly, and rarely offered for sale, having been in a great measure superseded by modern authors. The recent and most complete work on American Ornithology, that of Messrs. Baird, Brewer, and Ridgway, is also costly. Mr. Samuels' book on the "Birds of New England and Adjacent States" has been thought too expensive to be within the reach of all, and more or less inaccurate and incomplete. Dr. Couses' admirable "Key to North American Birds," which is probably the best book of reference for collectors, and students of inanimate birds, treats merely of structure, classification, and specific descriptions. Book Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States Vol 3

Download or read book Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States Vol 3 written by Edward Howe Forbush and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States, Vol. 3: Land Birds From Sparrows to Thrushes The editor of a posthumous volume is under a handicap in endeavoring to express the feelings of the author of the book to the many individuals who assisted in its preparation. Fortunately, I had come to know Mr. Forbush rather intimately during the several years immediately preceding his death, when it was my privilege to act as his assistant in pre paring material for these volumes. Edward Howe Forbush was a'man of great attainments in the fields of economic ornithology and of wildlife conservation, but he was also a man of great modesty. While he was continually consulted by scientists of the highest standing as well as by the veriest tyros in bird study, he was always ready to give full credit to those who had contributed in any way to his fund of information. It was his intention to acknowledge his indebted ness to all those who had assisted him, in the preface of the third volume of The Birds of Massachusetts. It is not possible for me to name all those to whom Mr. Forbush felt indebted, but all who assisted him and whose work is not herein acknowledged, will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have made a contribution to a work of real value, which has added to the knowledge and pleasure of countless individuals. First to whom Mr. Forbush tendered grateful recognition was his wife, to whom he was married in 1882 and who survives him. Throughout the long period of their life together, Mrs. Forbush not only encouraged him in his chosen work, but was of much assistance to him in many ways. Although crippled by illness in recent years, she spent many long hours in reading and revising his manuscript and in painstaking correction of the proof of The Birds of Massachusetts, and her criticisms were always constructive and helpful.
