Book Wal Mart

Download or read book Wal Mart written by Sandra Stringer Vance and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The story of Wal-Mart Stores is the stuff of legends: in 1945 a poor boy from a poor state opens a variety store in a small town in rural Arkansas and, through hard work, ingenuity, and a commitment to providing customers with low-priced, high-quality merchandise, goes on to create the largest retail operation in the United States. In just 30 years Sam Walton and his Wal-Mart Stores transformed mass merchandising and revolutionized the shopping habits and expectations of American consumers. Moreover, Walton himself - a modest, simple man devoted to family, community, and his employees and customers - so inspired the American people that he was awarded the Medal of Freedom. Upon his death in 1992 Walton left his family a fortune estimated at $23.5 billion; that same year Wal-Mart Stores attained net sales of $43.9 billion and had 1,720 Wal-Mart units operating in 39 states." "This fascinating history of a man and his enterprise is adroitly chronicled by Sandra S. Vance and Roy V. Scott in Wal-Mart, the first scholarly study of Wal-Mart Stores and Sam Walton's remarkable career. Organizing their material chronologically, the authors trace Walton's evolving entrepreneurial style and mounting achievements, consistently linking the character of the man to the innovations he produced - starting with a tiny Ben Franklin variety store in 1945 and progressing to Walton's 5 & 10, Walton's Family Centers, and finally Wal-Mart Stores in the ensuing decades. Readers gain a wealth of insights into the history of American retailing and reach a solid understanding of the elements contributing to Wal-Mart's success: the steadfast dedication to customer service, the sophisticated mechanisms for keeping overhead low, the company policies designed to engender loyalty from employees and customers alike. Given particular emphasis are the factors that led to Wal-Mart's 1990-91 victory over its chief rivals, K mart and Sears, in becoming the nation's leading retailer; also highlighted is the issue of Wal-Mart's impact on the communities it serves and the small businesses therein." "Wal-Mart will hold the interest of students and scholars, of retailing executives and general readers, from first page to last."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Population Reconstruction

Download or read book Population Reconstruction written by Gerrit Bloothooft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems that are encountered, and solutions that have been proposed, when we aim to identify people and to reconstruct populations under conditions where information is scarce, ambiguous, fuzzy and sometimes erroneous. The process from handwritten registers to a reconstructed digitized population consists of three major phases, reflected in the three main sections of this book. The first phase involves transcribing and digitizing the data while structuring the information in a meaningful and efficient way. In the second phase, records that refer to the same person or group of persons are identified by a process of linkage. In the third and final phase, the information on an individual is combined into a reconstruction of their life course. The studies and examples in this book originate from a range of countries, each with its own cultural and administrative characteristics, and from medieval charters through historical censuses and vital registration, to the modern issue of privacy preservation. Despite the diverse places and times addressed, they all share the study of fundamental issues when it comes to model reasoning for population reconstruction and the possibilities and limitations of information technology to support this process. It is thus not a single discipline that is involved in such an endeavor. Historians, social scientists, and linguists represent the humanities through their knowledge of the complexity of the past, the limitations of sources, and the possible interpretations of information. The availability of big data from digitized archives and the need for complex analyses to identify individuals calls for the involvement of computer scientists. With contributions from all these fields, often in direct cooperation, this book is at the heart of the digital humanities, and will hopefully offer a source of inspiration for future investigations.

Book Tuberculosis of the Bones and Joints

Download or read book Tuberculosis of the Bones and Joints written by Michel Martini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone and joint tuberculosis is common in developing countries, and surgeons in these countries are often faced with the dual problem of diagnosing and treating this disease. However, bone and joint tuberculosis has not yet completely disappeared from industrialized countries, either. Therefore, this book is also intended for orthopedic surgeons in industrialized countries, who, faced with the rare but characteristic problems posed by bone and joint tuberculosis, are searching for reliable solutions. The last comprehensive textbook on this subject appeared more than 20 years ago, and that was a third edition of a pre-war work. Advances in chemotherapy had made this edition out-of-date even before it was published. The need for a definite up-to-date textbook has therefore been acute. The present book has been written to fill that need, and is based not only upon 20 years' experience with 700 cases, but also upon the results of clinical, bacteriologic, pathologic, and therapeutic research.

Book excerpt: "I found myself considering those rare things only books can do, feats outside the purview of film or fine art . . . Gorgeous." —Samantha Hunt, The New York Times Book Review It is New Year’s Eve 1990, in a small town in southeast Australia. Ru’s father, Jack, one of thousands of Australians once conscripted to serve in the Vietnam War, has disappeared. This time Ru thinks he might be gone for good. As rumors spread of a huge black cat stalking the landscape beyond their door, the rest of the family is barely holding on. Ru’s sister, Lani, is throwing herself into sex, drugs, and dangerous company. Their mother, Evelyn, is escaping into memories of a more vibrant youth. And meanwhile there is Les, Jack’s inscrutable brother, who seems to move through their lives like a ghost, earning both trust and suspicion. A Loving, Faithful Animal is an incandescent portrait of one family searching for what may yet be redeemable from the ruins of war. Tender, brutal, and heart–stopping in its beauty, this novel marks the arrival in the United States of Josephine Rowe, the winner of the 2016 Elizabeth Jolley Prize and one of Australia’s most extraordinary young writers.
