Book excerpt: When the Second World War commenced on 1 September 1939, the people of Cornwall rallied together in a way that they hadnt done since the Great War of 191418. Young men in their thousands enlisted in the army while older men joined the countrys home defense force, the Home Guard. Women took over the jobs of men and many helped charitable organizations and other worthy causes by joining the Womens Voluntary Service. The Land Army assisted with agricultural work, a service that was vitally needed within the county. Many RAF bases were set up in Cornwall, which proved essential for the defense of the country and as stopping-off points during bombing raids and other missions. Many evacuees from other parts of the country, including London and nearby Plymouth, were welcomed to the county and were looked after by local families. Thousands of American soldiers were based in Cornwall before leaving for the shores of Northern France during D-Day in June 1944. They received a warm welcome from the people of the county and many invited them into their homes. This book covers the people of Cornwalls contribution to the war effort, from the commencement of the conflict in September 1939 to its end in September 1945. It features many forgotten news stories of the day and looks at the changes to civilians everyday lives, entertainment and the internment of aliens living within the area. Air raid shelters, carrying a gas mask, rationing, the make-do-and-mend culture and the collection of scrap metal all became a way of life.Huge celebrations took place all over the county when the war came to an end but many of the lives of the people living in Cornwall were changed forever.

This book covers the people of Devon's contribution to the war effort, from the commencement of the conflict in September 1939, to its end in September 1945. It features many forgotten news stories of the day and looks at the changes to civilian's everyday lives, entertainment, spies and the internment of aliens living within the area.Devon became vital as a base for troops and as a dispatch point for the many men who left to fight in Europe. Several RAF bases were also established within the county to repel German attacks. Air raid shelters were erected in gardens and at public places and many children living in larger cities were swiftly evacuated to the countryside, as Plymouth and Exeter both suffered greatly from German bombing, with much of Plymouth being obliterated. Carrying a gas mask, rationing, the make-do-and-mend culture and the collection of scrap metal all became a generic way of life. Many of the jobs left open by men fighting abroad were taken up by women on the Home Front. The Women's Voluntary Service assisted with the evacuation of mothers and children to the country, carried out civil defense duties and provided food and clothing for the many refugees from occupied Europe.During the buildup to D Day, American troops were trained and stationed within the county before leaving for the beaches of Normandy. Slapton Sands, Dartmoor and Woolacombe were all used as training grounds with tragic loss of life at Slapton.Devon played a truly vital role in the war and its people contributed greatly to bringing the world changing conflict to an end.

Book Plymouth in the Great War

Download or read book Plymouth in the Great War written by Derek Tait and published by Pen & Sword Military. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Plymouth in the First World War has never been fully covered although the town played a key role in the deployment of troops to Northern Europe as well as supplying ships and vital munitions. By August 1914, the British War office had moved 120,000 men into the town. Plymouth became the principal base for military operations and was one of the most important of the southern shipping ports. The town also played a vital role caring for the many wounded soldiers who returned home from the front. The effect of the war on Plymouth was great. By the end of the conflict, there wasn't a family in Plymouth who hadn't lost a son, father, nephew, uncle or brother. There were tremendous celebrations in the streets as the end of the war was announced but the effects of the war lasted for years to come. AUTHOR: Derek Tait is a full-time author who lives in Plymouth. Book Plymouth and Devonport

Download or read book Plymouth and Devonport written by Henry Francis Whitfeld and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plymouth and Devonport: In Times of War and Peace HE present work represents the first attempt that has been made to blend the histories of Plymouth and Devonport. Originally the intention of the author was to supply the romance of their development during the century which is now rapidly closing in. When, however, he thought that his task was approaching completion, he discovered that it was in reality beginning. There had been a desire - strongly expressed for some years - that the past of the Three Towns should be realistically recalled, and the author had to some extent anticipated this wish by devoting himself to the collection of more picturesque material than had presumably hitherto been gathered. A vein of a new order was thus struck, and, with the perception of its interest, it became a fascination to pursue it until it was apparently exhausted. Book Bolting Horses and Falling Bombs

Download or read book Bolting Horses and Falling Bombs written by Anthony Trevail and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Anthony Trevail was born in 1936 in Plymouth and witnessed first hand the terrible bombing of that city by Hitler’s Third Reich. Through the eyes of a child, the war is shown to have been a time of great adventure. Yet, looking back and writing with the hindsight of maturity, Trevail shows that for adults it was a time of fear and of tragedy. This book is of great interest not only for its evocation of what it was like for one family that lived through the devastation of war, but for the way it highlights how individual events, such as bolting horses, determine the course of history, making and breaking families along the way. This incredible story is based on real persons and events, as experienced by the author and also as recounted to him by his parents. To fill in certain gaps in the events, and to protect the identity of some of those still living, some names and events are fictional. Travel back to England to feel the effects of world war that became The Making of a Plymouth Family, 1924 to 1945.

Book History of the Town of Plymouth From Its First Settlement in 1620 to the Present Time

Download or read book History of the Town of Plymouth From Its First Settlement in 1620 to the Present Time written by James Thacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Plymouth, From Its First Settlement in 1620, to the Present Time: With a Concise History of the Aborigines of New England, and Their Wars With the English, &C To this edition of the work is added a concise history of the aborigines of New England and of their wars with the English, together with anecdotes and biographical sketches of their chiefs. This part of the work comes from original authority, and is closely connected with the history of our fathers while in their forlorn condition. It forms a distinct treatise at the end of the volume. This production is now submitted to the candid judgment of the public; the materials are derived from the most authentic sources, and are condensed in as limited a Space as would consist with propriety and convenience. It is hoped that the reader will not complain of redundancy. Minuteness of detail is indispensable in the delineation of individual character, or in a faithful relation of transactions under the most trying circumstances. Should errors be detected in this compilation, the author would only observe, that' perfect works come only from perfect wisdom, but if assiduity and care can bring any work to a respectable standard of correctness, he may, in this instance, have some grounds to hepe for public approbation.
