Book Biomedical and Aerosol Studies Associated with a Field Release of Plutonium

Download or read book Biomedical and Aerosol Studies Associated with a Field Release of Plutonium written by R. H. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 24, 1957, a high-explosive detonation was employed at the Nevada Test Site to release plutonium for field study of this fissile material as a contaminant. One of the four major measurement programs was a biomedical experiment which comprised exposure of animals to first deposition of plutonium oxide from a detonation cloud (acute subjects) and to the wind-induced resuspension of contamination (chronic subjects) as long as six months after original deposition. Acute subjects (26 dogs and 40 rats) were arrayed 500, 1000, and 2000 feet downwind from ground zero, and nine rats were flown on balloon cables positioned to intercept the cloud 500 feet from ground zero.

Book Plutonium

    Book Details:
  • Author : Greg Roza
  • Publisher : The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc
  • Release : 2008-08-15
  • ISBN : 1435848217
  • Pages : 50 pages

Download or read book Plutonium written by Greg Roza and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutonium (Pu) plays a special role in the exploration of space. It is also used to create energy in nuclear power plants. Despite these useful abilities, plutonium is known to be a highly dangerous and controversial element. It is used to make nuclear weaponry. Exposure to plutonium can make people terminally sick. Despite the dangers, more than 2,000 tons (1,800 metric tons) of the element have been created over the past seventy years. Students learn about Glenn Seaborg, Arthur Wahl, and Joseph Kennedy’s discovery of plutonium for the first time by bombarding uranium-238 with deuterons (a proton and a neutron) in the cyclotron. They also explore plutonium’s place in the actinide series of the periodic table and its radioactivity, its allotropes, compounds, and alloys, and its nuclear applications and dangers.

Book Materials Science and Fuel Technologies of Uranium and Plutonium Mixed Oxide

Download or read book Materials Science and Fuel Technologies of Uranium and Plutonium Mixed Oxide written by Masato Kato and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials Science and Fuel Technologies of Uranium and Plutonium Mixed Oxide offers a deep understanding of MOX properties for nuclear fuels that will be useful for performance evaluation. It also reviews fuel property simulation technology and an irradiation behavior model required for performance evaluation. Based on research findings, the book investigates various physical property data in order to develop MOX fuel for sodium-cooled fast reactors. It discusses a database of MOX properties, including oxygen potential, melting temperature, the lattice parameter, sound speeds, thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, oxygen self-diffusion, and chemical diffusion coefficients, that was used to derive a science-based model of MOX properties (Sci-M Pro) for fuel-performance code development. Features: Concisely covers the essential aspects of MOX nuclear fuels. Explores MOX nuclear fuels by systematically evaluating various physical property values using a behavior model. Presents fuel property simulation technology. Considers oxygen potential, the lattice parameter, sound speeds, and oxygen self-diffusion. Discusses melting temperature, thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, and chemical diffusion coefficients. The book will be useful for researchers and engineers working in the field of nuclear fuels and nuclear materials.

Book Study of Plutonium Oxide Heat Generation in a Wood Moderated Container

Download or read book Study of Plutonium Oxide Heat Generation in a Wood Moderated Container written by J. D. Moseley and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of heat due to the radioactive decay of plutonium in the form of plutonium dioxide stored in wooden containers is considered. The results of two experiments in which plutonium dioxide is placed inside wooden blocks and the temperature rise measured at various points is reported. Heat transfer calculations are then performed to show that the data obtained are those which would be expected, i.e., that Fourier's Law adequately describes the situation. The heat build up in a proposed wood moderated shipping container is calculated, using some of the assumptions verified in the described experiments.
