Book Disproportionation of Tetravalent and Pentavalent Plutonium Ions

Download or read book Disproportionation of Tetravalent and Pentavalent Plutonium Ions written by Silver G. L. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutonium literature does not satisfactorily include the four common oxidation states of plutonium in discussions of the stoichiometry of the disproportionation of the tetravalent and pentavalent states of this element. A theoretical study of possible consequences of including all common oxidation states of plutonium in the disproportionation reactions was made. The study, based upon available potential and free energy data, indicates that the disproportionation equations can be written with all four species included. The potential behavior of disproportionated plutonium solutions can be predicted with the aid of these new equations. The equations also predict that the hydrogen ion dependence of plutonium disproportionation reactions should not be exactly fourth power at all acidities.

Book Disproportionation and Polymerization of Plutonium IV in Dilute Aqueous Solutions

Download or read book Disproportionation and Polymerization of Plutonium IV in Dilute Aqueous Solutions written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rates of polymerization and disproportionation of Pu(IV) have been studied using low concentrations: (1.7 - 10) x 10−M Pu, (0.8 - 12) x 10−M HCl and 0.0iM ionic strength. Osmium(II) complexes such as the tris-4,4'-2,2'-bipyridine complex were found to react rapidly with Pu(IV) but very slowly, if at all, with Pu(IV) polymer, Pu(III), or Pu(V). Thus, it is possible to determine unreacted Pu(IV) in the presence of rection products by using Os(II) complexes. Disproportionation reaction products, Pu(III) and Pu(V), were determined using their reactions with Ce(IV) sulfate. We find -d[Pu(IV)]/dt = k'[Pu(IV)]2 at constant pH. Log k' varies from about 4.25 at pH 3 to about 7.0 at pH 4.1 (units for k' are M−1min−1). The [H] dependence varies from about -2 to -3 over the pH range studied. The measured rate is the sum of those for polymerization and disproportionation; the latter reaction amounts to about 75% of the total at pH 3 and 20% at pH 4. The second-order rate constants for disproportionation are very much larger than expected on the basis of extrapolation from 0.2 to 1.0M HC104 solutions. The products of the reaction do not affect the rate, but U(VI), aged Pu(IV) polymer, and CO2 increase the rate.

Book Disproportionation of Tetravalent and Pentavalent Plutonium Ions in the Presence of Hexavalent Plutonium

Download or read book Disproportionation of Tetravalent and Pentavalent Plutonium Ions in the Presence of Hexavalent Plutonium written by Silver G. L. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept that the disproportionation reactions of tetravalent and pentavalent plutonium ions are special cases of the general plutonium equilibrium problem is illustrated with the estimation of the distribution of plutonium valence states when tetravalent and pentavalent plutonium ions are allowed to disproportionate in the presence of excess hexavalent plutonium. Sources of errors in disproportionation stoichiometry coefficients are described, and a table of relative errors is presented. A computer program suitable for estimating plutonium valence state distribution for any initial plutonium oxidation number is included. Application of the program to the study of the autoreduction of solutions of hexavalent 238Pu and 239Pu is suggested.

Book Optimization and Plutonium Equilibrium

Download or read book Optimization and Plutonium Equilibrium written by Gary L. Silver and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sequential simplex method has been used to estimate the extent of disproportionation of tetravalent plutonium in dilute acid. A method for simulating potentiometric titrations is proposed, and this method suggests that the stoichiometric end point and the inflection point may not always correspond in the potentiometric titration of plutonium. A possible characteristic equation for the nitrite-plutonium reaction is illustrated, and the method of proportional equations is extended to the iron-plutonium reaction.

Book Chemical Thermodynamics of Neptunium and Plutonium

Download or read book Chemical Thermodynamics of Neptunium and Plutonium written by Robert J. Lemire and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-08-26 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike earlier books in this series, this review describes the selection of chemical thermodynamic data for species of two elements, neptunium and plutonium. Although this came about more by circumstance than design, it has allowed for a more consistent approach to chemical interpretation than might have occurred in two separate treatments. It has also drawn attention to cases where the available data do not show expected parallels, and where further work may be useful to confirm or refute apparent differences in the behaviour of neptunium and plutonium.

Book Uranium Plutonium Transplutonic Elements

Download or read book Uranium Plutonium Transplutonic Elements written by Harold C. Hodge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1037 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a year ago the three editors sat down at a table and worked out a set of six chapter headings which they believed might serve, in turn, for each of the three sections of this handbook. (The reader will note a similarity in order of presentation and in emphasis.) However, as our editorial plans progressed it became apparent that for each element and for the element group, there were one or two special topics appropiate for that section alone. Accordingly, in the section on uranium the common pattern holds for Chaps. 1 through 6 which include: an introduction (Chap. 1), a discussion of the physical and chemical properties (Chap. 2), experimental data on animals (Chap. 3), ex perimental data on man (Chap. 4), the rationale and development of air con centration limits to control industrial worker exposure (Chap. 5), and the prac tical problems of applying such limits in the uranium industry (Chap. 6). Chap. 7 entitled "Uranium Mining Hazards" is the subject category which is special for uranium; the chapter brings up to date the account of an important occupational hazard which was first noted by GEORGIUS AGRICOLA (1490-1555).
