M. Dacier has added to his tranflation a great number of learned and ufeful notes but with them there are mixed fome that are apparently erroneous, many'that are trifling, and many that are exceedingly prolix; and very few of thefe have been omitted by the Englt/h editors. It certainly can be of no ufe to the reader, to put him continually upon his guard againft believing all the {tories of dreams and prodigies related by Plutarch, to tell him that fuch or fuch a fentiment is very true and jufl, and that the reafons given for it by Plutarch make it very evident, to attempt to illufirate what is in itfelf perfeetly clear, or to make fuch reflec tions upon facts, or objections to fome of Plutarch's fentiments, as cannot efcape even the plainel'c under ftanding. Yet obfervations of this kind, which are rather an affront than an afliftance to the reader; make, no fmall part in M. Doct'er's notes. Many of them therefore are entirely omitted, many are abridged, and fome are otherwife altered. As there appeared to be fome ufeful notes of M. Dacz'er which had been omitted by the former editors, or were publifhed afterwards, thefe are added to this edition; there are alfo fome taken from other commentators, and a few of the edi tor's own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives, Vol. 6: Translated From the Original Greek; With Notes Critical and Historical, and a Life of Plutarch The mathematicians-3 say the sun does not move in the same direction with the heat ens, nor yet in a direction quite opposite; but, circulating with a gentle and almost insensible obliquity, gives the whole system such a temperature as tends to its preservation. So in a system of government, if a states man be determined to describe a straight line, and in all things to thwart the wishes of the people, such rigour must render his administration odious; on the other hand, if he suffer himself to be carried along with their most erroneous options, the government will soon be in a tottering and ruinous state. The latter, however, is the more common error of the two. But the politics which keep a middle course, sometimes slacken ing, and sometimes tightening the reins, indulging the people in one point to gain another that is more important, are the only measures that are formed upon rational principles for a well timed condescension, and moderate treatment, will lead men to concur in many useful schemes, into which they could never be driven by despotism and violence. This medium, it must be acknowledged, it is laborious and difficult to hit upon, because it requires a mixture of dignity with gentleness; but, when the just temperature is gained, it presents the happiest and most perfect harmony that can be conceived. It Is by this sublime harmony, that the Supreme Being governs the world; for nature is not dragged into obedience to his com mands: his influence is indeed irresistible, but it is at the same time mild and rational.
