Book The Makers of Rome

Download or read book The Makers of Rome written by Plutarch and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These nine biographies illuminate the careers, personalities and military campaigns of some of Rome's greatest statesmen, whose lives span the earliest days of the Republic to the establishment of the Empire. Selected from Plutarch's Roman Lives, they include prominent figures who achieved fame for their pivotal roles in Roman history, such as soldierly Marcellus, eloquent Cato and cautious Fabius. Here too are vivid portraits of ambitious, hot-tempered Coriolanus; objective, principled Brutus and open-hearted Mark Anthony, who would later be brought to life by Shakespeare. In recounting the lives of these great leaders, Plutarch also explores the problems of statecraft and power and illustrates the Roman people's genius for political compromise, which led to their mastery of the ancient world.

Book The Complete Collection of Plutarch s Parallel Lives

Download or read book The Complete Collection of Plutarch s Parallel Lives written by Plutarch and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch, later named, on his becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, c. 46 - 120 AD, was a Greek historian, biographer, essayist, and Middle Platonist known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. Plutarch lived most of his life at Chaeronea, and his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi (where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia) apparently occupied little of his time. He led an active social and civic life while producing an extensive body of writing, much of which survived. By his writings and lectures Plutarch became a celebrity in the Roman Empire. At his country estate, guests from all over the empire congregated for serious conversation, presided over by Plutarch in his marble chair. Many of these dialogues were recorded and published, and the 78 essays and other works which have survived are now known collectively as the Moralia. Plutarch's best-known work is the Parallel Lives, a series of biographies of famous Greeks and Romans, arranged in pairs to illuminate their common moral virtues and vices. The surviving Lives contain 23 pairs, each with one Greek Life and one Roman Life, as well as four unpaired single Lives. Some of the Lives, such as those of Heracles, Philip II of Macedon and Scipio Africanus, no longer exist; many of the remaining Lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae or have been tampered with by later writers. Extant Lives include those on Aristides, Pericles, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Cicero, Cato the Younger, Mark Antony, and Marcus Junius Brutus, all of which are included here.

Book Plutarch s Lives

Download or read book Plutarch s Lives written by Plutarch and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These forty-eight biographies by the ancient Greek scholar demonstrate the parallel lives of famous rulers such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. A Greek priest of Delphi who acquired Roman citizenship later in life, Plutarch undertook his Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans to demonstrate the influence of character on the fates of famous men. He also wished to show that the legacy and achievements of his native Greece were no less impressive than those of Rome. Today, the surviving text represents a treasure trove of information and insights into some of the ancient world’s most significant personalities. A major source of material for William Shakespeare’s history plays, Plutarch’sLives draws parallels between Pericles and Fabius Maximus, Alcibiades and Coriolanus, Lysander and Sulla, Demetrius and Mark Antony,; among many others.
