Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Download or read book The Miracle Month written by Mitch Horowitz and published by Gildan Media LLC aka G&D Media. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of the only people I know who pulls off punk rock and self-help simultaneously.”—Conner Habib Power is what naturally results when everything needless and self-defeating is stripped out of your life. Are you prepared to dedicate 30 days to throwing off whatever conceals the greater self you have always suspected you are? If you’re unsure do not even begin this book. In The Miracle Month, Mitch Horowitz, “a cross between Aleister Crowley and Alan Watts” (Duncan Trussell), provides a 30-day, self-enforced academy that disrupts, upends, and overthrows every social and self-imposed barrier to your innate power. “This book,” Mitch writes, “is for people who would prefer nearly any alternative than to slide back into the anxiety, self-limitations, and half-in, half-out existence that they have known until now. Does that sound extreme? It is not. It is an open door to change.” Mitch helps you “Understand Power” (Day 9), “Give Up One Thing That Causes You Pain” (Day 13), realize “You Are Not Someone Else’s Decision” (Day 27), and confront the question: “Do You Enjoy Suffering?” (Day 26). In 30 realizable, graspable steps you will reverse years of peer-enforced conformity and self-negation to become who you—rightly—sense you are. “Horowitz comes across as the real deal: he is an authentic ‘adept mind’ and he knows his stuff.”—Boing Boing “Convincing...takes us far from naïve doctrines.”—Paris Match “Mitch is solid gold.”—David Lynch

Download or read book I Hear Some People Just Have Sex written by Sandra L. Vasher and published by Mortal Ink Press, LLC. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight and a Half Years Sixteen Infertility Cycles Four Timed Intercourse Cycles Two IUI Cycles Two Egg Retrievals Seven Frozen Embryo Transfers Thousands of Dollars Two Miscarriages Three Pregnancies Live Births ...? That’s my infertility story. Almost a decade of trying, almost $65,000 spent on infertility treatments. So many IVF cycles that I can give myself progesterone shots in the rear. So many transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds that a pap smear no longer impresses me. Changed relationships, changed career goals. A whole list of things no one should ever say to someone going through infertility. And almost a baby. Almost. Because even though I am scheduled for a C-section next week, as I publish this book, I still do not have any guarantees. Infertility is a hell of a life crisis. But also, if you can learn how to navigate these choppy waters—if you can learn how to let go of what you can’t control, how to cope with the hard parts you never saw coming, how to play the world’s longest waiting game—you will build resilience and grit you didn’t think you were capable of. This is not a “how to have a baby” book. It’s not a “how to survive until you have a baby” book. It’s a “how to survive and maybe even thrive while trying to have a baby” book. That’s what I know: how to survive infertility and make the best of it while you’re praying for the miracle of a baby. And I know how to survive this because I’ve done it for nearly a decade. Some people just have sex to get pregnant. Not me. Maybe not you, either. We have infertility battles to fight, and this gets worse before it gets better. But I was made strong enough for this, and so were you. Let me show you how I know.

Download or read book Lessons from a Complex Child written by Ellen Woodbriar and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At twenty-nine months, my son Jackson had met all of his developmental milestones. He spoke in full sentences, knew his ABCs and colors, had well-developed fine and gross motor skills, was affectionate, had perfect eye contact, loved to talk, and was extremely social. Six months later, just after Jackson’s third birthday, neurologists couldn’t rule out that he might have a malignant form of epilepsy, some form of neurodegenerative disorder, have regressive encephalopathy, be autistic, or have a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). What could possibly have caused the regression he experienced over a four-month period, the irritability he was exhibiting, the sixty to eighty seizures he was enduring each day, and the autistic-like behaviors he had developed? Although I’m not a physician and don’t work in the healthcare profession, I have lived through the regression and recovery of my own child. This experience has led me to form the opinion that, potentially, too many children are being put on the autism spectrum. Some children, like Jackson, with ASD-like symptoms are not autistic and therefore are not receiving the full breadth of intervention that could potentially help them recover. Do I have proof of this? No, because from my experience, and up until this point, there has not been enough research that the medical profession recognizes as reliable made available to the public or to parents like me to identify the root cause of some symptoms. The purpose of my telling this story is not to give anyone, or any family, false hope but, with good reason, to encourage you to leave no stone unturned in treating a medically complex child. It takes passionate determination and tenacity to find underlying and seemingly hidden causes of complex illnesses and to see the journey through to recovery when possible.
