Download or read book Plumbelly written by Gary S. Maynard and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the South Pacific, this debut novel is “a brilliant, discordant, and vulnerable picture of running away to sea and coming of age” (Matthew P. Murphy, editor, WoodenBoat magazine). It’s been two years since fifteen-year-old Gabe’s father uprooted his family and left the United States to sail around the world. The wanderlust ended in the islands of Ma’atea, where Gabe feels every bit the outsider. Until he meets two other palagis: a headstrong boy named Lloyd and the beguiling Tanya. Together they form an unbreakable bond—out of love, boredom, and the need for self-discovery. Gabe’s restlessness leads to quiet rebellions at first, full of flirtations with a burgeoning sexuality. But when he fears being suspected of a serious crime, he and his friends decide to flee Tongu Tongu. Their escape is Plumbelly, a twenty-nine-foot sloop that will be their refuge as they make their way toward the groundswells of the Pacific, to be carried into perils worse than they ever imagined.

Book excerpt: A woman searches for the daughter who was taken from her long ago in “a powder keg of a novel, where secrets and lies explode into truth and consequences” (Marlon James, National Book Award finalist and author of Black Leopard, Red Wolf). To find the daughter taken from her, Plum Valentine must first locate the child’s father, who walked out of a hospital with the day-old baby girl without explanation. Seventeen years later, weary of her unfruitful search, Plum sees an article in a community newspaper with a photo of the man for whom she has spent half her life searching. He has become an Episcopal priest. Her plan: confront him and walk away with the daughter he took from her. From Brooklyn to the island of Jamaica, Tea by the Sea traces Plum’s circuitous route to find her daughter—and explores how Plum’s and the priest’s love came apart. “The forbidden love story of Plum and Lenworth comes alive in this heart-rending novel . . . heady twists and turns delivered in an urgent and beautiful prose.” —Lauren Francis-Sharma, author of Book of the Little Axe “A moving portrait of identity, belonging, family, immigration, and the power of maternal love.” —Washington Independent Review of Books
Download or read book You re So Dead written by Ash Parsons and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fans of Karen M. McManus and Katie Alender will devour this darkly funny, fast-paced mystery."--SLJ A hilarious Agatha Christie-inspired YA thriller-comedy about three best friends who sneak into an influencers-only festival event (gone wrong), only to discover a killer is in their midst--and they have to uncover the truth and solve the mystery before it's too late. Perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying and Truly Devious. Plum Winter has always come in second to her sister, the unbelievably cool, famous influencer Peach Winter. And when Peach is invited to an all-expenses-paid trip to a luxurious art-and-music festival for influencers on a private island in the Caribbean, Plum decides it's finally her time to shine. So she intercepts the invite--and asks her two best friends, Sofia and Marlowe, to come along to the fest with her. It'll be a spring break they'll never forget. But when Plum and her friends get to the island, it's not anything like it seemed in the invite. The island is run-down, creepy, and there doesn't even seem to be a festival--it's just seven other quasi-celebrities and influencers, and none of the glitz and glamour she expected. Then people start to die... Plum and her friends soon realize that someone has lured each of them to the "festival" to kill them. Someone has a vendetta against every person on the island--and no one is supposed to leave alive. So, together, Plum, Sofia, and Marlowe will do whatever it takes to unravel the mystery of the killer, and fight to save themselves and as many influencers as they can, before it's too late. Praise for You're So Dead: “You're So Dead is the hilarious, swoony, Surprisingly Stabby book of my dreams! Ash Parsons delivers a sharp send-up of influencer culture wrapped in a clever whodunnit that also has a lot of heart. While I never want to go to "Pyre Festival," I'd hang out with Plum, Marlowe, and Sofia any day.”—Rachel Hawkins, New York Times Bestselling author of The Wife Upstairs “Parsons (Girls Save the World in This One) gently satirizes online culture and the ill-fated Fyre Festival in this frothy homage to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. The cheeky mystery is both clever and satisfying.” --Publishers Weekly "Parsons effectively mixes social media commentary and thrilling murder mystery with a dash of ridiculous humor . . . A #trendy and #entertaining whodunit." --Kirkus Reviews "[A]riveting thriller-comedy...writing in short, energetic bursts with a witty voice, Parsons keeps the twists coming, her motley crew’s energy running frantic as the body count rises and they try to discover the killer in their midst." --Booklist

Book excerpt: Sea Change is Peter Nichols' first book, a biographical account of his own dramatic adventure. When his marriage ended, Nichols had to sell the only thing he and his wife owned - their boat. With only his sextant, his instincts as a seasoned sailor and his memories of a floundering marriage, he sets out from England to sail to America to sell his beloved boat, Toad. Halfway across the Atlantic, Toad springs a leak. As the sea floods in faster, Nichols tries everything to stay afloat, desperately pumping the water out by hand. He loses the battle after three days and is forced to abandon Toad. This is more than a sea-tale. It is the painful story of his marriage, his boat and himself.

Download or read book Adventures in the Trade Wind written by Richard Dey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is at once the biography of an Englishman who became the pioneering charterboat skipper of an American yacht, and a history of the charterboat business in the islands. Morris Nicholson’s story reflects a time now all but vanished in the islands, beginning when they were neglected colonial outposts and a single yacht meant income for the islanders. In no other book is there an account of how skippered yachts, bareboats, and headboats came to sail the Caribbean Sea and became an economic sector. However it is Nicholson’s story—and his stories of others—that drives the narrative and fills it with human interest.
Download or read book Selected Bequia Poems written by Richard Dey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems reflect the experience of a contemporary American writer and sailor in the West Indies. Richard Dey comes to the islands in a tradition that began with Philip Freneau in 1775; but it is also a tradition of expatriates anywhere, and of literate travel writing. The poems bear witness to the tremendous change in the islands as they moved from neglected colonies to modern mini-states, as well as the changes within the poet as he grew over thirty-five years, from youth through middle age. Almost unknown before Dey sailed there, Bequia, the place of these poems, is now on the literary map.
Download or read book Around Around Around written by Roy Starkey and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Liverpool in 1945, Roy Starkey grew up fascinated with the natural world. As a schoolboy he joined the local botanical society and made a number of trips to isolated bird observatories around the British coast. At the age of twenty-five he became disillusioned by the politics of university research and decided to leave and do his own thing. With very little money, no boatbuilding skills and no experience of the sea he built Sea Loone, a thirty-three foot sloop, and sailed away. The boat and crew were soon tested on the ocean, first losing the mast over the side and then sailing into one of the worst gales ever - the 1979 'Fastnet Gale' - which claimed eighteen lives on the 306 yachts participating in that year's biannual 'Fastnet Race'. Over the next nearly forty years Sea Loone sailed throughout the tropics finally completing three very convoluted circumnavigations of the world. Having experienced hardships, tragedies and many happy adventures, Roy at last decided to put pen to paper and record his remarkable story.
