Book Plugging in electronic Resource the Increase of Household Internet Use Continues Into 1999

Download or read book Plugging in electronic Resource the Increase of Household Internet Use Continues Into 1999 written by Paul Dickinson and published by Micromedia. This book was released on 2000 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians are logging onto the Internet in growing numbers. In 1999, the proportion of households that regularly used it, from any location of use, increased to 41.8%. The increase was largely driven by the remarkable jump in the proportion of households that used the Internet from home (28.7%). Not only are households using the Internet, but they are using it more often and for longer periods of time. Households have also become more diversified in their use of this new medium and they use it for a wider variety of services, including the purchase of goods and services. Once households become connected, they stay connected, with connections to the Internet via cable accounting for 12% in 1999. Churning has been very low. Higher-income households are still more likely to use the Internet, as are households with higher levels of education. Although Internet use among seniors is still much lower than among younger households, Internet penetration increased for all age groups and family types. The richer provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario are the most connected but connectedness increased in every province, with Québec experiencing the highest rate of growth. There is considerable variability in the rates of Internet penetration among larger urban centres but, in general, households living there are more to be connected than those living in other geographical areas.

Book excerpt: In formal education, a curriculum (plural curricula) is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university. As an idea, curriculum stems from the Latin word for race course, referring to the course of deeds and experiences through which children grow and mature in becoming adults. Crucial to the curriculum is the definition of the course objectives that usually are expressed as learning outcomes and normally include the program's assessment strategy. These outcomes and assessments are grouped as units (or modules), and, therefore, the curriculum comprises a collection of such units, each, in turn, comprising a specialised, specific part of the curriculum. So, a typical curriculum includes communications, numeracy, information technology, and social skills units, with specific, specialised teaching of each. This book presents research on educational curricula from around the world.

Book excerpt: What are the effects of conflict between home and work? Does work stress affect those who live with you? In the rapidly changing modern work environment, time pressures seem ever increasing and new technology allows work to be conducted any time and anywhere. These are just two of the factors that make it more and more difficult for working men and women to integrate work and home life. Consequently, there is a need for flexible and innovative solutions to manage the work-home interface. Work-Life Balance: A Psychological Perspective presents up-to-date information on work-home issues, including the latest research findings. The book’s emphasis is strongly psychological, with a focus on practical solutions, and includes chapters which deal with psychological issues such as the conflict between work and family, how work stresses may affect partners, and recovery from work. It also includes sections on legal issues, as well as examples of initiatives being implemented by leading employers. Contributors are drawn from the leading researchers in their fields and reflect the international character of the current challenges facing employers and employees. Its practical focus and innovative approach make this an essential book for managers, HR professionals and organizational psychologists, as well as students in these disciplines. The theoretical basis and research focus mean the book will also be invaluable for researchers investigating workplace issues.
