Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foremost experts on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation come together to discuss its role in the rescue, recovery, and future of our wildlife resources. At the end of the nineteenth century, North America suffered a catastrophic loss of wildlife driven by unbridled resource extraction, market hunting, and unrelenting subsistence killing. This crisis led powerful political forces in the United States and Canada to collaborate in the hopes of reversing the process, not merely halting the extinctions but returning wildlife to abundance. While there was great understanding of how to manage wildlife in Europe, where wildlife management was an old, mature profession, Continental methods depended on social values often unacceptable to North Americans. Even Canada, a loyal colony of England, abandoned wildlife management as practiced in the mother country and joined forces with like-minded Americans to develop a revolutionary system of wildlife conservation. In time, and surviving the close scrutiny and hard ongoing debate of open, democratic societies, this series of conservation practices became known as the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. In this book, editors Shane P. Mahoney and Valerius Geist, both leading authorities on the North American Model, bring together their expert colleagues to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, achievements, and shortcomings of this highly successful conservation approach. This volume • reviews the emergence of conservation in late nineteenth–early twentieth century North America • provides detailed explorations of the Model's institutions, principles, laws, and policies • places the Model within ecological, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts • describes the many economic, social, and cultural benefits of wildlife restoration and management • addresses the Model's challenges and limitations while pointing to emerging opportunities for increasing inclusivity and optimizing implementation Studying the North American experience offers insight into how institutionalizing policies and laws while incentivizing citizen engagement can result in a resilient framework for conservation. Written for wildlife professionals, researchers, and students, this book explores the factors that helped fashion an enduring conservation system, one that has not only rescued, recovered, and sustainably utilized wildlife for over a century, but that has also advanced a significant economic driver and a greater scientific understanding of wildlife ecology. Book excerpt: This conference focused on how agricultural strategies can best be tailored to the Malawian context and result in improvements for nutrition and health. It is crucially important to make linkages--the best agricultural practices will not succeed in improving the nation's nutritional status if there is not good nutritional care and access to health services.

This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, national and international scientific organizations have become increasingly engaged in considering how to respond to the biosecurity implications of developments in the life sciences and in assessing trends in science and technology (S&T) relevant to biological and chemical weapons nonproliferation. The latest example is an international workshop, Trends in Science and Technology Relevant to the Biological Weapons Convention, held October 31 - November 3, 2010 at the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. Life Sciences and Related Fields summarizes the workshop, plenary, and breakout discussion sessions held during this convention. Given the immense diversity of current research and development, the report is only able to provide an overview of the areas of science and technology the committee believes are potentially relevant to the future of the Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention (BWC), although there is an effort to identify areas that seemed particularly ripe for further exploration and analysis. The report offers findings and conclusions organized around three fundamental and frequently cited trends in S&T that affect the scope and operation of the convention: The rapid pace of change in the life sciences and related fields; The increasing diffusion of life sciences research capacity and its applications, both internationally and beyond traditional research institutions; and The extent to which additional scientific and technical disciplines beyond biology are increasingly involved in life sciences research. The report does not make recommendations about policy options to respond to the implications of the identified trends. The choice of such responses rests with the 164 States Parties to the Convention, who must take into account multiple factors beyond the project's focus on the state of the science.

Download or read book Corpus Juris of Islamic International Criminal Justice written by Farhad Malekian and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering scholarly oeuvre evaluates the major comparative philosophy of Islamic international criminal justice. It represents an in-depth analysis of the necessities of creating an Islamic international criminal court, its possible jurisdiction, proceedings, judgments, and sanctions. It implies a court functioning under the legal personality of the International Criminal Court, with comparative international criminal lawyers with basic knowledge of Shariah contributing to the prevention of crimes and impunity at an international level. The morality and philosophy of Islamic justice are highly relevant with reference to the atrocities committed explicitly or implicitly under the pretext of Islamic rules by superiors, groups and governments. The volume focuses on substantive criminal law and three methods of the criminal procedure, namely the inquisitorial, adversarial, and adquisitorial. The first two constitute the corpus juris of civil and common law systems. The third term presents a hybrid of the first two methods. The intention is to enhance the scope of each method of the criminal procedure comprehensively. The volume examines their variations and effects on a shared system of international criminal justice. The inherence of comparable norms in the foundation of Islamic and international criminal law affirms their efficiency in the implementation of the essence of the complementarity principle. This book will appeal to readers who are interested in comparative criminal law, international criminal justice, and Shariah criminal law. It is recommended for course literature.
Download or read book International Criminal Law Deskbook written by Craig Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts to try individuals such as Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein for international crimes and the creation of the International Criminal Court highlight the growing currency and importance of international criminal law as a discipline in its own right. Contemporary importance and academic interest in the subject is rapidly eclipsing that in the more mainstream discipline of human rights. For practitioners, scholars and students of international criminal law (ICL), this unique collection provides access to the core international instruments in one convenient volume. Containing seventy-nine principal documents on ICL dating from 1919 to 2005, this user-friendly book organizes the documents around generally recognised categories of international crimes, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and terrorism. It also includes constitutive instruments of the most important international, domestic and hybrid tribunals, including the Statute of the International Criminal Court, its rules of procedure and elements of crimes. Principal international and regional instruments which deal with the facilitation of a truly international system of criminal justice, in the form of extradition and mutual assistance are also included. Each document has been carefully edited to present information that is directly relevant to international criminal law while all extraneous material has been excluded. Most importantly, each extract has its own introduction which provides the reader with official citations, parties, date of entry into force, an outline of the legislative history, links to related documents and a brief commentary analyzing and contextualizing the principal provisions.
