If you must worship a poet, worship my collateral ancestor, Master John de Bergham, a Cistercian monk, one of the greatest ornaments of his age - so the Pedigree reads and a translator of the Iliad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sonnets of William Shakespeare: New Light and Old Evidence Should my grouping of the sonnets seem auda cions, it may be remembered that their first publisher only claimed to give the public a large number of Shakespeare's minor poems, as they reached his hands (probably from three distinct sources). I disclaim, in altering Thorpe's ar rangement, any attempt to alter Shakespeare. In my judgment, every lover and student of these poems has as good a right to change the order in which they are printed as their first pirate publisher, even a better right, if by so doing their interest is enhanced and their meaning clarified. Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold written by William Shakespeare and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'James Anthony has done something I would have confidently stated to be impossible. He has "translated" Shakespeare’s sonnets and he has done so with an insolent, loveable charm ... A dazzling success’ – Stephen Fry Rediscover the greatest love poetry ever written Shall I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re more delightful, always shining strong; High winds blow hard on flowering buds in May, And summer never seems to last that long... Shakespeare’s sonnets are some of the nation’s favourite lines of verse, but the Elizabethan language can make it difficult to really understand them. Many guides offer to clarify the meaning, but lose the magic of the words by explaining them away. James Anthony has done something boldly different. He has rewritten the whole series of poems as sonnets using modern language, while retaining the rhythm and rhyme patterns that gives them such power. In doing so he breathes new life into the original poems and opens them up for a modern readership, demystifying Shakespeare’s eternal poetry with provocative new translations and delightful new lines. Presented as an attractive book with the original sonnets facing their new translations, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems, made new.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drama of Life: Sonnets and Music To dare to be frankly personal is one of the privileges of intimacy. Some of the most charming of private letters are those in which the writer takes it for granted that his own doings will be of real interest to his correspondent, and discourses upon them freely and without apology or any other form of jarring self-consciousness. He will even be forgiven for writing of his grievances if he but present them with suflicient spontaneity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Sonnets: Reconsidered, and in Part Rearranged With Introductory Chapters, Notes, and a Reprint of the Original 1609 Edition I was led to take up the thorny questions which Shakespeare's Sonnets so abundantly raise, by the appearance of two articles in the Fortnightly Review for Dec. 1897 and Feb. 1898. In the first Of these, Mr \villiam Archer, inclining to the theory that the Mr W. H. Of Thorpe's prefatory address was William Herbert Earl of Pembroke (which involves that the Sonnets were mainly inspired by him), shewed how baseless was the contention that most, or indeed any, of them were addressed to Henry Wriothesley Earl of Southampton. In the second Of the articles above referred to, Mr Sidney Lee, inclining to the theory that many Of the Sonnets were addressed to Lord Southampton, shewed how baseless was the conteh tion that Mr W. H. Could have been Lord Pembroke, and declared him to have been a mere go-between, who procured the Oopy for Thomas Thorpe the publisher. Book Sonnets and Translations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sonnets and Translations Classic Reprint written by Henry William Hutchinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sonnets and Translations A short appreciation, taken from the Pauline, is printed separately in an appendix together with a notice from Tb: Times. Before the war he had lived much the life that any ordinary Public School boy lives. He played the ordinary games and did the ordinary work, with perhaps the ordinary amount of distinction. He was not an athlete, but he played for his second XV.: he was not a classical scholar, as the term is generally understood, but he was a classical exhibitioner of New College, Oxford. It was, however, mainly outside the round of school life that his work really lay. A love of litera ture may be, and usually is, begun at school; its pursuit must always be more or less a matter of private inclination. He had, it is true, won the Milton prize for the best poem in two successive years. He had also edited the Pauline in his last year and contributed poems, both light and serious, to it, and to an unofficial magazine. But the Pauline is even less than most school magazines a literary paper, and though, when editor, he had tried with some success to alter it, it still remains true that his literary work was more a matter of his home than his school life. It was encouraged by his pastors and masters, and helped by the natural course of his school work, but it could probably not have developed itself as it did if all his time had belonged to the school. The fact that St. Paul's is mainly a day school was of great assist ance to him, and he always gratefully recognised his good fortune in this. The ample leisure of a day school gave him all the opportunity he desired for the private pursuit of literature. He was a wide and voracious reader - mainly, of course, of poetry, and especially of dramatic poetry - but he had more than a nodding acquaintance with such other branches of literature as fiction and history. From school he had naturally acquired a considerable knowledge of the classical masterpieces, and a sufficient foundation in the French and German tongues upon which privately to build an eventual familiarity with the written speech of the formerand a ripening acquaintance with that of the latter. In both of these, however, he had been chie y interested in poetry and the drama. He had intended to add a knowledge of Italian, but had never had time to acquire more than the barest smattering. In all these languages he had been in the habit of translating what most appealed to him. For the most part, except perhaps with Horace, these translations do not contain his best work; they partake rather of the nature of a literary exercise. Download or read book The Militant God and Some Sonnets Verses and Rhymes Classic Reprint written by Clifford Greve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Militant God, and Some Sonnets, Verses, and Rhymes A drama does not require a preface. Aristotle puts it well for he says: A tragedy must be complete in itself. Lessing adds a bit in his Dramatic Notes when he defiantly states in so many words: I can announce to an audience, my plot before the curtain arises and then those in the theatre should enjoy the play as well as if the story had not been told to them. Charles F rohman was unquestionably the Pericles, or the Elizabeth of modern times. The world knows Charles Frohman. However, that name was a trinity. There were three brothers and perhaps the greatest was the least known and the purity of soul of the entire organization really belonged to a woman, the wife of one of them. The writer once enjoyed the great privilege of being the Literary Manager and Play Reader for a Frohman. In that capacity the author read and analyzed more than fourteen hundred plays and in each, found, at least, the germ of a drama.
