Book excerpt: ... And one day life suddenly awakens you; with a bucket of cold water that refreshes you with a slap of responsibilities that don't belong to you. The day goes on —because everything has to go on— life throws you in, pushes you and leaves you there, in the middle of the ring, without a cape or a sword and there comes the bull. What do you do? Do you grab the bull by the horns? Do you run as fast as you can and in one of those reaches to reach the stands? Do you paralyze and urinate from fear? Do you ignore it completely and go in search of the exit? Do you bow and pray to an "Padre Nuestro"? Do you dominate the bull with your eyes? Do you sit down to cry in the middle of the arena? What do you do? Game of Numbers tells the inescapable story of who bit his lip and with his eyes closed in panic, tried to grab the bull by the horns. Tells how, with a trembling knee, without a cape and swords, you can face the bull, and the only way forward is with the firm palm of your comrades, your friends from secondary school, high school and university, and others that you do along the way. Game of Numbers, talks about those friends who understand your stupid stubbornness to grab the damn bull by the horns, with all your weakness, with all your fears. Tells the rough story of how you can face your fights, with fear, with anguish and a rest of cheers from your friends... while you see what happens when the bull finally charges towards you.

Book Playing with Reality

  • Author : Kelly Clancy
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2024-06-18
  • ISBN : 059353820X
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Playing with Reality written by Kelly Clancy and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging intellectual history that reveals how important games have been to human progress, and what’s at stake when we forget what games we’re really playing. We play games to learn about the world, to understand our minds and the minds of others, and to make predictions about the future. Games are an essential aspect of humanity and a powerful tool for modeling reality. They’re also a lot of fun. But games can be dangerous, especially when we mistake the model worlds of games for reality itself and let gamification co-opt human decision making. Playing with Reality explores the riveting history of games since the Enlightenment, weaving an unexpected path through military theory, political science, evolutionary biology, the development of computers and AI, cutting-edge neuroscience, and cognitive psychology. Neuroscientist and physicist Kelly Clancy shows how intertwined games have been with the arc of history. War games shaped the outcomes of real wars in nineteenth and twentieth century Europe. Game theory warped our understanding of human behavior and brought us to the brink of annihilation—yet still underlies basic assumptions in economics, politics, and technology design. We used games to teach computers how to learn for themselves, and now we are designing games that will determine the shape of society and future of democracy. In this revelatory new work, Clancy makes the bold argument that the human fascination with games is the key to understanding our nature and our actions.

Book The Mystery of Numbers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Annemarie Schimmel
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1994-04-07
  • ISBN : 0199879850
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Mystery of Numbers written by Annemarie Schimmel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-04-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the number seven lucky--even holy--in almost every culture? Why do we speak of the four corners of the earth? Why do cats have nine lives (except in Iran, where they have seven)? From literature to folklore to private superstitions, numbers play a conspicuous role in our daily lives. But in this fascinating book, Annemarie Schimmel shows that numbers have been filled with mystery and meaning since the earliest times, and across every society. In The Mystery of Numbers Annemarie Schimmel conducts an illuminating tour of the mysteries attributed to numbers over the centuries. She begins with an informative and often surprising introduction to the origins of number systems: pre-Roman Europeans, for example, may have had one based on twenty, not ten (as suggested by the English word "score" and the French word for 80, quatrevingt --four times twenty), while the Mayans had a system more sophisticated than our own. Schimmel also reveals how our fascination with numbers has led to a rich cross-fertilization of mathematical knowledge: "Arabic" numerals, for instance, were picked up by Europe from the Arabs, who had earlier adopted them from Indian sources ("Algorithm" and "algebra" are corruptions of the Arabic author and title names of a mathematical text prized in medieval Europe). But the heart of the book is an engrossing guide to the symbolism of numbers. Number symbolism, she shows, has deep roots in Western culture, from the philosophy of the Pythagoreans and Platonists, to the religious mysticism of the Cabala and the Islamic Brethren of Purity, to Kepler's belief that the laws of planetary motion should be mathematically elegant, to the unlucky thirteen. After exploring the sources of number symbolism, Schimmel examines individual numbers ranging from one to ten thousand, discussing the meanings they have had for Judaic, Christian, and Islamic traditions, with examples from Indian, Chinese, and Native American cultures as well. Two, for instance, has widely been seen as a number of contradiction and polarity, a number of discord and antithesis. And six, according to ancient and neo-platonic thinking, is the most perfect number because it is both the sum and the product of its parts (1+2+3=6 and 1x2x3=6). Using examples ranging from the Bible to the Mayans to Shakespeare, she shows how numbers have been considered feminine and masculine, holy and evil, lucky and unlucky. A highly respected scholar of Islamic culture, Annemarie Schimmel draws on her vast knowledge to paint a rich, cross-cultural portrait of the many meanings of numbers. Engaging and accessible, her account uncovers the roots of a phenomenon we all feel every Friday the thirteenth.

Book Exploring the Integer Addition and Subtraction Landscape

Download or read book Exploring the Integer Addition and Subtraction Landscape written by Laura Bofferding and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades there has been increased interest in how students and teachers think and learn about negative numbers from a variety of perspectives. In particular, there has been debate about when integers should be taught and how to teach them to best support students’ learning. This book brings together recent work from researchers to illuminate the state of our understanding about issues related to integer addition and subtraction with a goal of highlighting how the variety of perspectives support each other or contribute to the field in unique ways. In particular, this book focuses on three main areas of integer work: students’ thinking, models and metaphors, and teachers’ thinking. Each chapter highlights a theoretically guided study centered on integer addition and subtraction. Internationally known scholars help connect the perspectives and offer additional insights through section commentaries. This book is an invaluable resource to those who are interested in mathematics education and numerical thinking.
