Book excerpt: From blind date to blindsided… I've been living my dream life for so long, it never occurred to me it could turn into a nightmare overnight. But that’s exactly what happens when my estranged sister dies, leaving me with temporary custody of her moody eleven-year-old daughter. At twenty-six, I’m a professional hockey player and bachelor with zero interest in settling down, let alone raising a kid—especially one that hates me. That’s where the other skate drops… The stunning new woman in my life is the sunshine to my grumpy, but I can’t stay away, even though I know I shouldn’t start something I can’t finish. Now I’m outnumbered, and to make things extra fun, the only person my niece hates more than me is my new girlfriend. I’m learning the hard way there’s no play book for parenting… or dating.

Download or read book Sonic Phantoms written by Barbara Ellison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Barbara Ellison and Thomas B. W. Bailey lay out and explore the mystifying and evanescent musical territory of 'sonic phantoms': auditory illusions within the musical material that convey a 'phantasmatic' presence. Structured around a large body of compositional work developed by Ellison over the past decade, sonic phantoms are revealed and illustrated as they arise through a diverse array of musical sources, materials, techniques, and compositional tools: voices (real and synthetic), field recordings, instrument manipulation, object amplification, improvisation, and recording studio techniques. Somehow inherent in all music--and perhaps in all sound--sonic phantoms lurk and stalk with the promise of mystery and elevation. We just need to conjure them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am not an angel nor a genie nor a ghost...I am Erik!' A mysterious Phantom haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House where he has fallen passionately in love with the beautiful singer Christine Daaé. Under his guidance her singing rises to new heights and she is triumphantly acclaimed. But Christine is also loved by Raoul de Chagny, and by returning his love she makes the fiend she knows as the Angel of Music mad with jealousy. When the Phantom is finally unmasked, will Christine see beyond his hideous disfigurement? The twists and turns of Leroux's thrilling story have captivated readers since its very first appearance in 1910, and its outlines are known to many more who have seen it on stage or film. This new translation is as full-blooded and sensational as the original. David Coward's introduction tells the fascinating story of the novel's genesis, and his thorough notes further illuminate details of the narrative. Download or read book The Game Designer s Playbook written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video games have captivated us for over 50 years, giving us entire worlds to explore, new ways to connect with friends, thought-provoking stories, or just a fun way to pass the time. Creating games is a dream for many, but making great games is challenging. The Game Designer's Playbook is about meeting that challenge. More specifically, it's a book about game interaction design; in other words, shaping what players can do and how they do it to make a game satisfying and memorable. Our time with a game is built on interaction, from basic things like pushing buttons on a controller, to making complicated strategic decisions and engaging with the narrative. If you've ever felt the adrenaline rush from beating a perfectly tuned boss fight or been delighted by the fanfare of picking up that last collectible, you've experienced good interaction design firsthand. The Game Designer's Playbook is about learning what makes for great (or terrible!) interaction design in games, exploring things like controls, feedback, story, and tutorial design by analyzing existing games. It also looks at how newer and still-developing tech like VR and streaming are changing the ways we play, and how you can bring great interaction design to your own games.

Book excerpt: The Phantoms are back with a vengeance… and the City of Angels will never be the same. I never asked for the spotlight, but inheriting a pro hockey team pulls me into a world of chaos. All eyes are on me now. I’m no stranger to the world of hockey but watching from the sidelines and calling the shots are two very different things. Especially when you’re not wanted. It’s time for me to take charge and clean house. When I need people I can trust, one man comes to mind… my ex. He’s one of the best goalies in the league, and despite what went down between us, he’s still in my corner. It’s our little arrangement off the ice that complicates things. If I’m going to make my power play, I need him by my side, but that means keeping our heads in the game, and our hearts out of the equation.

Download or read book Musical Illusions and Phantom Words written by Diana Deutsch and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking synthesis of art and science, Diana Deutsch, one of the world's leading experts on the psychology of music, shows how illusions of music and speech--many of which she herself discovered--have fundamentally altered thinking about the brain. These astonishing illusions show that people can differ strikingly in how they hear musical patterns--differences that reflect variations in brain organization as well as influences of language on music perception. Drawing on a wide variety of fields, including psychology, music theory, linguistics, and neuroscience, Deutsch examines questions such as: When an orchestra performs a symphony, what is the "real" music? Is it in the mind of the composer, or the conductor, or different members of the audience? Deutsch also explores extremes of musical ability, and other surprising responses to music and speech. Why is perfect pitch so rare? Why do some people hallucinate music or speech? Why do we hear phantom words and phrases? Why are we subject to stuck tunes, or "earworms"? Why do we hear a spoken phrase as sung just because it is presented repeatedly? In evaluating these questions, she also shows how music and speech are intertwined, and argues that they stem from an early form of communication that had elements of both. Many of the illusions described in the book are so striking and paradoxical that you need to hear them to believe them. The book enables you to listen to the sounds that are described while reading about them.
