Book The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Philosophy

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Philosophy written by James Hankins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Philosophy, published in 2007, provides an introduction to a complex period of change in the subject matter and practice of philosophy. The philosophy of the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries is often seen as transitional between the scholastic philosophy of the Middle Ages and modern philosophy, but the essays collected here, by a distinguished international team of contributors, call these assumptions into question, emphasizing both the continuity with scholastic philosophy and the role of Renaissance philosophy in the emergence of modernity. They explore the ways in which the science, religion and politics of the period reflect and are reflected in its philosophical life, and they emphasize the dynamism and pluralism of a period which saw both new perspectives and enduring contributions to the history of philosophy. This will be an invaluable guide for students of philosophy, intellectual historians, and all who are interested in Renaissance thought.

Book (c)ne THE HELLENIC AGE: PLATONISM AND ITS ANTECEDENTS CHAPTER V PLATO; THE SUPKEMACY OF THE FINAL IN PLACE OF THE EFFICIENT CAUSE CHAPTER V PLATO 1. Much that has been said about Socrates must be taken as referring to the Platonic portraiture. Yet the views therein explicit are only the legitimate deductions of the master's fundamental thought. A Final Cause for the Universe; why? not whence? or what? or how? In this purposive working lay the secret of the Energy which was at the root of all being. He did not care for Anaxagoras' explanation; he was much disappointed with the frigid introduction of a Detis ex machina. Such an answer failed to satisfy his questionings, which were by no means speculative, but entirely practical, utilitarian. Plato did not care to know either what was the primal element, or how processes of alternate condensation and rarefaction produced the universe as we see it, or how man's soul was a chance medley of primordial substances, soon to be dissolved again. He thought he could see his way to a firmer ground; not so much the ground occupied by Eeason (useful as she was to dispel illusion, and convince a pupil conclusively that he knew nothing), as that of pious instinct, which he believed was found in all men.1 Similarly, Knowledge, in Socrates or Plato, 1 We find the same somewhat puzzling use in the Christian Alexandrine phrases of yvwris and vlaru; in spite of our familiar connotation of these terms, it is yvwns that implies the warm, emotional, loving confidence in God that nowadays we are inclined to call Faith. does not imply so much a result of Dialectic, as the immediate intuition of the truth, which flashes forth as soon as the sceptical work of Dialectic is completed, and has shown man.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a detailed interpretation of Plato’s texts and Platonic philosophy in its various forms and shapes as a living force in the history of philosophy, from the Hellenistic age, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance Italy, to modern England, America, Japan, and Israel. Most of the contributions here deal with the afterlife and influence of Plato’s dialogues in later Greek philosophy and in various places and periods, and approach a number of dialogues and issues from new perspectives, shedding new light on some ancient problems. These studies represent no single approach, and illustrate, in their various ways, some different methods of approaching the original and ever-surprising author that Plato has always been.

Book excerpt: Proclus (412-485 A.D.) was one of the last official "successors" of Plato at the head of the Academy in Athens at the end of Antiquity, before the school was finally closed down in 529. As a prolific author of systematic works on a wide range of topics and one of the most influential commentators on Plato of all times, the legacy of Proclus in the cultural history of the west can hardly be overestimated. This book introduces the reader to Proclus' life and works, his place in the Platonic tradition of Antiquity, and the influence his work exerted in later ages. Various chapters are devoted to Proclus' metaphysical system, including his doctrines about the first principle of all reality, the One, and about the Forms and the soul. The broad range of Proclus' thought is further illustrated by highlighting his contribution to philosophy of nature, scientific theory, theory of knowledge, and philosophy of language. Finally, also his most original doctrines on evil and providence, his Neoplatonic virtue ethics, his complex views on theology and religious practice, and his metaphysical aesthetics receive separate treatments. This book is the first to bring together the leading scholars in the field and to present a state of the art of Proclean studies today. In doing so, it provides the most comprehensive introduction to Proclus' thought currently available.
