Book Business Ecosystems in China

Book excerpt: We cannot afford to miss the remarkable rise of Chinese business ecosystems. Alibaba and their peers Baidu, Tencent, Xiaomi, and LeEco showcase unprecedented growth and success in China and are expanding their impact globally. With a combined market capitalization of close to 600 billion USD, incubating over 1,000 new ventures and an average annual growth of over 50%, they have become a force to reckon with for the likes of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and IBM. 'Business ecosystem' is a frequently used concept to describe the unique competitive advantages of the American technology giants. This book explores not only the application of a business ecosystem approach in the Chinese context but also deals with the key strategic question: How did these five Chinese business ecosystems grow so rapidly and successfully? The book takes the growth and transformation of Alibaba's business ecosystem as a focus case in comparison with Baidu, Tencent, Xiaomi, and LeEco. These business ecosystems developed in less than 20 years and transformed from organic growth to rapid expansion by investment and acquisition, entrepreneurship and incubation of new ventures, continuous innovation, and internationalization. This book brings insights and practical lessons on leading, creating, and disrupting markets for corporate executives and professionals in global business, a comparative case study for researchers and students of management, and food for thought on Chinese ways of doing business.

Book Emergence of the Alibaba Business Ecosystem

Download or read book Emergence of the Alibaba Business Ecosystem written by Giana Töngi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the Business Ecosystem, which is based on the existence of an orchestrator and the cooperation of various partnerships across industries, has proven itself not only as a young theoretical discipline, but also in practice. Companies such as the Chinese Alibaba Group, which was founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, have recognized that through cooperation a greater value proposition can be offered to the customer. For this reason, Alibaba has improved its original core business of e-commerce and expanded into other industries such as financial services, logistics, and health care. By understanding the customer's movements within different business fields, Alibaba can collect, process, and analyze significant amounts of data relating to their everyday behavior. This allows for the company to offer individualized products and services. This work investigates, as a case study, how Alibaba has developed since its foundation, how its highly complex Business Ecosystem has evolved, and how Alibaba might develop in the future. The main focus is on the analysis of the interactions between the Alibaba-owned companies and its external partners. As a result, the Alibaba case analysis shows that many separate, co-existing Business Ecosystems are embedded within the whole Alibaba Business Ecosystem. A total of five such separate Business Ecosystems are presented in this master thesis and their relative functions are explained. These are Alibaba's FinTech-, logistics-, ecommerce-, new retail-, and consumer centric ecosystems. As a result of this analysis, it was shown that Alibaba has partnerships that are very important for the existence of the ecosystem, but also, on the other hand, that some of their exits are negligible. Furthermore, even though the Alibaba Business Ecosystem is open to everyone, there still exist some exclusions and restrictions, once someone is locked-in to this Business Ecosystem.

Book Can Alibaba Achieve Large Scale Sustainable Success in the American E Commerce Market

Download or read book Can Alibaba Achieve Large Scale Sustainable Success in the American E Commerce Market written by Hannah Müller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,8, Reutlingen University, language: English, abstract: This paper is a case study about Alibaba entering the US e-comerce market. Can Alibaba make large-scale sustainable success in the American e-commerce market? Or is the industry not attractive and the market saturated? Alibaba provides technology, infrastructure and marketing to help merchants, brands and businesses to leverage the power of new technology to engage with their customers. The Alibaba Group was founded in 1999 by Jack Ma and 17 other people. Alibaba was originally founded as a B2B e-commerce portal to connect Chinese manufacturers with overseas buyers. Nowadays, Alibaba ranks in the Top Ten companies in terms of market value. Most of the credit goes to Ma himself, because he utilized the first-mover advantage and successfully planned entrepreneurial growth and corporate initiatives. Looking back, Ma has traveled more than 800 hours to dozens of countries to meet business leaders and state representatives to convince them of Alibaba ́s aim: to let small and medium businesses (SMEs) from all parts of the world trade freely and securely on Alibaba ́s platforms. The company ́s vision is to achieve $1 trillion in gross merchandise by 2020 and to serve two billion customers by 2036. To achieve this, global operations are key and experts propose: “globalization is better done now than later”. Alibaba is currently experiencing high competitive pressure in China and will need to conquer new territories to continue on current trajectory. Needless to say, entry into the US market will not only be difficult, but also require premium strategic decisions with little to no room for errors.

Book E Commerce and Financial Services in Asia

Download or read book E Commerce and Financial Services in Asia written by Gerhard Kling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the drivers in the emergence, development and internal and global expansion of Asian e-commerce businesses. It tackles the problems inherent in the globalization strategy of a Japanese financial services firm operating in the e-commerce sector. The business world has been transformed by information technology and online companies, which benefitted during the Covid-19 pandemic, unlike the traditional retail sector of the economy. The well-known Amazon has seen the emergence of Asian alternatives, Alibaba from China and Coupang from South Korea, both of which have the transnational venture capital firm SoftBank of Japan as a large share owner. This book explores performance and potential in e-commerce and fin-tech, internationalisation strategies, governance problems associated with foreign corporations in South Korea and anti-monopoly drive aimed at China’s tech giants. Diverse topics are covered, including the results, impacts and implications of US stock exchange listings, liability of foreignness, dual-class structure and importance of corporate governance and social responsibility signalling and messaging. The chapters also cover local and global expansion — takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, such as Lazada for the South East Asian market and levels of satisfaction and loyalty. Finally, SoftBank is used as an example of individual and collective entrepreneurial learning in the case of SoftBank Academia. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book The Tao of Alibaba

Download or read book The Tao of Alibaba written by Brian A Wong and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a long-time Alibaba executive and former special assistant to Jack Ma, this is the first book to articulate how Alibaba's unique culture and “tai chi” management principles are providing a business and economic development model for the rest of the world. If you took the economic might of Amazon, and added the penetration of Facebook, the ubiquity of Google, and the cultural significance of YouTube, you might have something starting to resemble Alibaba. Commonly mischaracterized as a kind of Chinese eBay for businesses, Alibaba and its interlinked network of products and services have exploded into global markets, disrupting conventional businesses and creating previously unimaginable opportunities for millions of small businesses worldwide. This book reveals the Tao of Alibaba—the company’s “secret sauce”—a consciously cultivated ethos and spirit that has enabled Alibaba to weather tough times and setbacks, and persist toward a common mission. It is a blueprint of the company’s management philosophy, crystalized into the most important elements that have driven its success, and it provides a road map for how to incorporate these principles into any organization’s operations. Wong distills his nearly two decades of experience inside the company to show readers how to align their organization’s capabilities with performance-maximizing tools in order to achieve success. But most importantly, the Tao of Alibaba teaches the pursuit of greater purpose and meaning, steering entrepreneurs to view their ventures as a vehicle for having profound and lasting impacts on their communities. Ultimately, the lessons shared in The Tao of Alibaba will serve as timeless tools for any entrepreneur seeking to configure their organization toward purpose and impact.

Book China s New Development Strategies

Download or read book China s New Development Strategies written by Gary Gereffi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines China’s new development policies, which seek to reposition China from export platform for a diverse array of low-cost consumer goods to technological leader in sectors linked to advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, e-commerce, and new internet-related production networks oriented to China’s large domestic market. Focusing on the post-2010 period, the book shows how China’s central government programs and reforms (“upgrading from above”) are coupled with a wide variety of local government policies, firm strategies, and domestic economy shifts (“upgrading from below”) that link China’s top-down programs into industrial growth on the ground. Placing China’s current development push within a global value chain (GVC) context shows how Chinese development strategies and the global economy remain intertwined. This volume brings together international GVC experts and China-based researchers who have carried out detailed fieldwork and industry specific quantitative analyses of GVCs and development with important implications for policymakers in both developed and developing economies.
