Download or read book Solar Cells written by Leonid A. Kosyachenko and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains chapters in which the problems of modern photovoltaics are considered. The majority of the chapters provide an overview of the results of research and development of different types of solar cells. Such chapters are completed by a justification for a new solar cell structure and technology. Of course, highly effective solar energy conversion is impossible without an in-depth examination of the solar cell components as physical materials. The relations between structural, thermodynamic, and optical properties of the physical material without addressing the band theory of solids are of both theoretical and practical interest. Requirements formulated for the material are also to be used for maximally efficient conversion of solar radiation into useful work.

Book Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Download or read book Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells written by W.R. Fahrner and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2006-08-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of today must face up to two contradictory energy problems: on the one hand, there is the sharply growing consumer demand in countries such as China and India. On the other hand, natural resources are dwindling. Moreover, many of those countries which still possess substantial gas and oil supplies are politically unstable. As a result, renewable natural energy sources have received great attention. Among these, solar-cell technology is one of the most promising candidates. However, there still remains the problem of the manufacturing costs of such cells. Many attempts have been made to reduce the production costs of “conventional” solar cells (manufactured from monocrystalline silicon using diffusion methods) by instead using cheaper grades of silicon, and simpler pn-junction fabrication. That is the ‘hero’ of this book; the heterojunction solar cell.

Book Review on Metallization in Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book Review on Metallization in Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells written by S. Saravanan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar cell market is led by silicon photovoltaics and holds around 92% of the total market. Silicon solar cell fabrication process involves several critical steps which affects cell efficiency to large extent. This includes surface texturization, diffusion, antireflective coatings, and contact metallization. Among the critical processes, metallization is more significant. By optimizing contact metallization, electrical and optical losses of the solar cells can be reduced or controlled. Conventional and advanced silicon solar cell processes are discussed briefly. Subsequently, different metallization technologies used for front contacts in conventional silicon solar cells such as screen printing and nickel/copper plating are reviewed in detail. Rear metallization is important to improve efficiency in passivated emitter rear contact cells and interdigitated back contact cells. Current models on local Al contact formation in passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) cells are reviewed, and the influence of process parameters on the formation of local Al contacts is discussed. Also, the contact mechanism and the influence of metal contacts in interdigitated back contact (IBC) cells are reviewed briefly. The research highlights on metallization of conventional screen printed solar cells are compared with PERC and IBC cells.

Book New Concepts for Front Side Metallization of Industrial Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book New Concepts for Front Side Metallization of Industrial Silicon Solar Cells written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on the optimization of the front side metallization process of industrial silicon solar cells. Since the state-of-the-art screen-printed contact has some well-known limitations, as a high contact resistance, a low lateral conductance and a low aspect ratio (height : width), alternative metallization technologies suitable for a one-layer grid structure of solar cells were reviewed. These include stencil-printing, pad-printing, ink-jet printing and dispensing. However, none of these technologies fulfills all the demands of a high-efficiency contact. Thus in this work the development of new concepts for the front side metallization was based on the two-layer contact structure. This structure has the advantage that every layer can be optimized individually. The requirement for the first layer is a small contact width, a low contact resistance, a sufficient adhesion to the underlying silicon surface as well as a good adhesion to the metal of the second layer. The task of the second layer is to collect the current from the first one, so its critical parameter is high line conductivity. Due to its major importance in the state-of-the-art industrial production, screen-printing was investigated as a reference process. The front side screen-printing process could be optimized by using hotmelt silver paste. Despite the different composition of the hotmelt compared to conventional paste, the rheology and hence the printability of the paste behaves similarly at elevated temperatures. The advantage of screen-printing hotmelt paste is the achievement of relatively high finger aspect ratios (1:3-1:4). Efficiencies of 18.0% on 12.5x12.5 cm2 Cz-silicon with an Al-BSF were obtained. Light-induced plating is used for the high-efficiency process in order to form the second layer of the proposed two-layer contact structure. Theoretical as well as experimental investigations allowed a profound understanding of the chemical reaction in the bath and optimum plating conditi.

Book Solar Cells and Their Applications

Download or read book Solar Cells and Their Applications written by Lewis M. Fraas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major update of solar cell technology and the solar marketplace Since the first publication of this important volume over a decade ago, dramatic changes have taken place with the solar market growing almost 100-fold and the U.S. moving from first to fourth place in the world market as analyzed in this Second Edition. Three bold new opportunities are identified for any countries wanting to improve market position. The first is combining pin solar cells with 3X concentration to achieve economic competitiveness near term. The second is charging battery-powered cars with solar cell generated electricity from arrays in surrounding areas including the car owners' homes while simultaneously reducing their home electricity bills by over ninety percent. The third is formation of economic "unions" of sufficient combined economic size to be major competitors. In this updated edition, feed-in tariffs are identified as the most effective approach for public policy. Reasons are provided to explain why pin solar cells outperform more traditional pn solar cells. Field test data are reported for nineteen percent pin solar cells and for ~500X concentrating systems with bare cell efficiencies approaching forty percent. Paths to bare cell efficiencies over fifty percent are described, and key missing program elements are identified. Since government support is needed for new technology prototype integration and qualification testing before manufacturing scale up, the key economic measure is identified in this volume as the electricity cost in cents per kilowatt-hour at the complete installed system level, rather than just the up-front solar cell modules' costs in dollars per watt. This Second Edition will benefit technologists in the fields of solar cells and systems; solar cell researchers; power systems designers; academics studying microelectronics, semiconductors, and solar cells; business students and investors with a technical focus; and government and political officials developing public policy.

Book Electrodeposited Copper Front Metallization for Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Download or read book Electrodeposited Copper Front Metallization for Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though screen-printing of low-temperature silver paste remains the state-of-the-art technique for the front-metallization of SHJ solar cells, recent studies have demonstrated large efficiency improvements when copper-electroplated contacts are used instead of screen-printed ones. However, due to the new materials and the new processes introduced by this technique, it is crucial to individually investigate their compatibility with the SHJ cell structure. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of how the performances of SHJ devices may be modified by these new materials and processes. First, effects on the amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) passivation have been studied for various processes such as DI water rinsing, dips in a copper removal solution and direct evaporation of copper on the a-Si:H. Finally, copper electroplating technique has been adapted in order to be applied to more complex cell structures such as high-efficiency IBC-SHJ.
