Book Plate Girder Railway Bridges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plate Girder Railway Bridges Classic Reprint written by Maurice Fitzmaurice and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate-Girder Railway Bridges The great majority of bridges on a line of railway are short-span plate-girder bridges. This book is intended to help those young engineers who, joining an engineers office for the first time, find themselves engaged in this class of work. All complicated calculations have been avoided and the object in view has been to help the student or pupil to design a bridge of this kind efficiently, cheaply, simply, and in accordance with modern practice. The theoretical knowledge required is small, and an attempt has been made not to enlarge on this part of the subject more than absolutely necessary. Practical details with regard to construction and erection, together with particulars of market sizes of plates, &c., have been given as far as possible. A chapter has been given to specifications for steel and iron, and to some notes on the treatment of these metals in the manufacture of bridge work, accompanied by some remarks on the working stresses to be adopted in these materials. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Design of Plate Girder Bridges This book has been written for the benefit of young Engineers and Draughtsmen engaged on the design of Constructional Steelwork, and is particularly intended for those whose training has been more on the theoretical than the practical side. It is the result of practical experience both in manufacture and design, and the examples given and opinions expressed are based on actual practice. In writing this book, it' has been assumed that the reader has a certain knowledge of Applied Mechanics and the Strength of Materials, and beyond mentioning the case of a Simple Beam, these subjects have. The girders are designed for Waddell's Class R loading, which consists of two ton engines followed by ifioo pounds per linear foot, for a dead load of 750 pounds of steel per linear foot, and 450 pounds per linear foot for track. In the investigation the live load is considered the same as that used in the design, but the dead load is taken directly from the computations which are the actual calculated weights. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate Girder Stiffeners: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Illinois, Presented June, 1910 The object of the use of stiffeners on plate girders is not well understood by the majority of engineers. The stressesiin stif feners and the theoretical treatment of them is an indefinite pr0b= lem in itself, and can only be solved by experimental investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect or stiffeners on the strength of model built-up plate girders and to determine the stresses in the stiffeners of a plate girder in actual railroad use, The present theory and method of design is reviewed and a summary 0 the experimental work in this subject is stated The effect of the number of stiffeners and the length of the outstanding legs of stifl fenars on the strength of plate girders is clearly shown by means of curves. A discussion of the results of each experiment is recorded after each set of tests, and a general discussion of the results may be found in the conclusion. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 51: December, 1903 The determination of the de ections for the special types of Open webbed, elastic frameworks often met in the practice Of the bridge engineer has received much attention, and very exact solutions are made for these problems by both graphical and analytical methods. The determination of the de ections for solid-webbed girders, which is Of equal theoretical interest and Often of great practical importance, however, has been confined chie y to girders with a constant moment Of inertia, and such determinations have usually been made by means of the equation Of the elastic curve. It is the purpose of this paper to give a more general method for determining the de ections of solid webbed girders under exure, and to illustrate its application to the forms of girders most frequently met in practical bridge construction. The plate-girder drawbridge, owing to its frequent use, is one of the most important structures with which the bridge engineer has to deal. Application Of the general formula to this case has been made, with the Object of giving a simple method of making a better design for the girders and end-lifting machinery for these bridges.
